That being said it's a shame that eve my pixel xl will outlive the S9 for Android updates. Wonder if Google would be willing to pull an Apple and support their phones for at least 5 years.

S9+ because superior hardware. You still have the creature comforts of 3.5mm, SD card, an actually good quality display, better speakers, and an equally impressive camera.
The Pixel 2 XL's hardware is questionable at best because Google can't figure out fucking quality control. You're playing a lottery with quality with a high probability you'll get a fucked up blue tinting display or high pitched whining from your speakers, or random overheating / battery drain from fast and loose updates. They want to be Apple so desperately they finally turned to Foxconn for the 3rd gen.
