How many monitors does a programmer really need?

0.5

three

code
database
output

with workspaces on bindings I only need one tbqh. Still..have 3 though.

I have no problems using a single 1920x1200 monitor

Sometimes I'll use my laptop to read documentation

if you program in cobol

Used to use 2, but I find it less annoying to use alt+tab instead.

One is all anyone needs.

Humans can't multitask, but rather switch quickly between multiple so that no dedication is applied to any single task. After concentration has been broken it can take as long as 10 minutes to get back.

two

thats a THICC monitor

I agree that we can't multitask, we do seem to have some sort of background processing though. Often times it's those moments when I lose concentration--I'll wander about the house for a bit thinking and drinking coffee and then I'll arrive at a better answer than I would have had I been sitting there scowling at my screen. Often times it comes to me as I'm following an unrelated train of thought--there will be some relation that brings it back. I do honestly find benefit in a wandering mind. The philosophers walked while they talked.

One. I had two for years until I realized that it was just a waste of electricity, one widescreen monitor with a decent resolution is more than enough.

as many as lungs they really need

you can still live with one but two is better

having 2 monitors was great for a student like me. alt+tab and googling datasheets and language documents is tedious. however i think having 2 monitors is a waste of space in the office.

This.

Not everyone has the same needs or preferences.

>however i think having 2 monitors is a waste of space in the office.
that's because you're still a student

Pic guy is gay.

No one, you can program based on PC speaker sound you tard.

Three
>code
>compiling
>cute anime girls

I'm good with 2

t. poorfag with one monitor only
how does a mouse pointer transmission between the two look like?

display/monitors/displays/monitor

Three monitors, vertical horizontal vertical.

Attached: resolution - Triple monitor setup with one big and two half-sized portraited screens - Super User.jp (608x456, 38K)

legendary monitor configuration, wish there were more monitors that this was possible with

intuitively seamless

>poorfag
you can get used SXGA displays for like $10
you could probably dumpster dive and find working displays

imlying i ever wanted 2 or more displays in the first place

Zero

You need one monitor for additional windows/documentation which cuts down on switching, that's the point

The point isn't to load yourself up on 10 tasks, it's to do one task more efficiently

One for coding, one for testing, one for cheat sheet/Google.

in a vr headset that is shaped like a flies eye, you could have tons of different screens all a mm away from eachother
truly the evolution oh humanity

I can work with one, two is much better, three feels quite luxurious but also optimal.
I actually haven't tried more than three, but I doubt it would improve my productivity.

I have two, I find it better to have one monitor for documentation and a browser window while having an IDE/editor om the other. Switching between workspaces etc. gets annoying for me when I need to back and forth quite a bit. One of my monitors is also 144hz for the occasional gayming session.

Wow, the contrast between men who are and are not getting laid is palpable.

>screens in vr
>three pixels per letter
yeah, no

About tree fiddy

1.
No more, no less.

>Jeff Dean uses Emacs
Time to jump on that bandwagon

Why the fuck do you need 3 MONITORS to view that? Ever hear of screen? Any halfway intelligent person would just run those in 3 terminals and easily switch between them. You don't need 3 brainlet monitors.

1. If you're doing basic stuff;
2. front-end code-behind/backend;
3. if you're managing a project, require code, review commits, database, email, project tracking and other shit that needs your attention all the time.

If your a OS with multiple desktops you online need one + a mouse with extra buttons or use a keyboard shortcut to switch between them

I've had one, I've had two and I've had an ultrawide. Two seems pretty optimal to me. Two is enough to have documentation + compiler output on one and a full editor (tree view, space to open two files side by side, often also TODO browser) on the other. Three was nice, but didn't add very much compared to the transition between one and two. An ultrawide is more like 1.5, it's as good as two for most things, but you run out of space a bit quicker and it can get a bit squeezy at times (if I want to view two files side by side I typically end up doing it vertically which is a good bit more cramped).

What keyboard is he using?

one good quality, just like the google faggot on the picture.

you can resize windows, faggot. I'm sure it's even possible on windows, pajeet.

some logitech model.

How the hell can you take a programmer seriously when he's running Ubuntu with Unity. lawl.

Real programmers, time and time again, care 99% about actually coding and give very little concern to making their entire OS fit their every whim.

Three
Code ( 9:16, portrait ), middle
Tools ( 16:9 ) right
Aux on the left.

Could use four tbqh

I agree, but why the fuck of all distros and DEs would you choose one needing >4GB RAM to be fast.

>programmers on Jow Forums who do nothing but argue about languages while they rice their desktop yet again
>3 monitors
>programmers at any job ever
>1 monitor, usually a laptop too depending
hmmmmmmmmm

i have one monitor just for the email client
everything else of value is on the main monitor

>ubuntu
Nice s᠋o᠋y᠋boy OS, s᠋o᠋y᠋boy

By the quality of his output. What you're saying is the equivalent of "how could he be a great painter? he isn't even using the best paints!" or "how could he be a great mechanic? he isn't using the best tools!"
You see how idiotic you sound?

2

1 for work
1 for log output and error messages, to alert if anything went wrong but not take up any active screen real estate.

goodness, is that the hard forum on the left?

>letting incoming messages distract you when you're coding.

Just check for messages 2 times a day, nothing can be that urgent.

I use one big ultrawide at work and my laptop just for slack. I feasibly could work with the one, but it's just convenient using my laptop's screen for chat and only chat.

Three.

One vertical monitor for Jow Forums and language documentation in case you forget some shit.

A wide middle monitor for your text editor, shell, database, etc etc

A wide monitor on the right for your music player of choice and a terminal session you haven't used for 2 weeks

yeah i maintain a corporate website with ~500 concurrent users (30k daily) and a couponing system with ~10k redemptions per day. shit breaks all the time and i have to fix it ASAP

one.

Who took this photo???

Attached: wtf.png (528x466, 326K)

this guy gets it

let your email client send desktop notifications bro you don't need your mail client up all the time, just check it every few minutes

one ultrawide

what else would i use my second monitor for? my remote sessions i like right in front of me and my IDE is right in front of me too
porn? at work?

I believe this is an All In One. Notice how there is something connected to the USB port

literally anything but constantly monitoring your inbox for bs from higher ups and end users

One 720p (The Enterprise/Corporate standard) 13" laptop screen.

nah its not constantly monitoring, its just off to the side and when i see it change i look over. just feels convenient
