CHINKS ON SUICIDE WATCH HAHAHAHAHAHA, where were you when white programmers made a chat platform that respects your freedom that BTFO'd Discord (a chink chat platform)?

Its too late. Discord is too popular, nobody will use this despite autists

what fucking platform is this??

Yep exactly this. Discord has run too long without competition, everyone else is trying to catch up and mimic its style but discord is very cemented in its place as 'the' chat program.

riot.im

other way around
discord came after slack and only has dedicated gaming autists using it

OWO what’s this?

Name that program! Seriously, please do. I’m desperately looking for a way out of the Discord botnet.

Matrix, using the riot client.

This doesn't look like riot.im

Oh shit I'm late to this news

based white programmers, i thought they didn't exist post 2010

Wait, does this support one-on-one chats and calls? If not, this is just another slack competitor and it’s going nowhere.

there's this cool new thing i've heard about called "IRC", maybe try looking into that?

>does this support one-on-one chats and calls
it already does that

>

Does Riot have E2EE yet? Does it require you to run your own server? I still don't really understand the Matrix protocol.

What's Discord?

Attached: 1366985009542.jpg (570x548, 79K)

>Does Riot have E2EE yet?
Yes. Off by default, and can be activeted per-room.
>Does it require you to run your own server?
No. Just like email, anyone CAN host a server, but there are plenty of public ones to choose from. The most popular one is currently on matrix.org.

ebin

I have no friends. What can I do with Riot?

What about stuff like data deletion? I have heard that the Matrix protocol duplicates messages across clients/servers or something? If I delete a message, is it gone?

Does it have something that will convince normies to use it over discord? No? Then it's going nowhere. And if no one uses it, there's no reason for anyone else to switch to it.

Make friends within riot? There's a room directory to find rooms suitable to your interests.

IRC does the exact same thing

if you don't want people to log your shit, don't say controversial things

if they want the degenerate audience they need to allow all porn. Porn discords are out of this world

You can redact a message, which will request that the server strip the contents of the message so no one can read it anymore. Once this is done, the server will send the same redact request to every server in which the room is federated.

It's up to each server admin whether or not to truly honor the request (Matthew has called it a "gentlman's agreement". I've always seen it work as expected, but you should treat it more like email. Yeah, you can request to recall an email, but people can always have clients that still save it, so it's not a magic delete button like on Discord. It's just part of being decentralized.

Sorry for so many questions, but how does private messaging work too? Is Riot reponsible for the transmission/storage of them? If so, where does Riot get the money to do this?

you can do it encrypted or unencrypted, google e2ee

In Matrix, a private chat is just an invite-only room with 2 people in it. They were receiving funding from a telcom company for a while.

nice, I hope to find furry room

I assure you there are. Rather than using the matrix.org server (which is most popular), you might actually like the one hosted on ponies.im. I'm sure there are plenty of fellow furries there, and you'll get an account that's "@ponies.im" rather than "@matrix.org"

But, for example, if I send a message to a Jow Forums server, the message goes to the goes to whoever is running that server. If I send a PM, the message just gets handled by Riot, correct?

It works the same as any other room where, if you both are on the same server, it will stay within that server. However, if the person you're messaging is on another server, your 2 servers will need to federate, so the person you're messaging is reading a copy stored on the server they're on.

Riot is just the client. Just like email, you're not locked into any one client for the Matrix protocol. There are other clients like Nheko. Fractal, plugin for pidgin, etc.

Kys boomer.

When a say private messaging, I mean outside of any channel. Or is that not possible? I should probably just register an account and check this myself.

if you're both on different servers and try to communicate, it'll use matrix

if you're on the same server, you can choose

that's very informative, thanks user

When you select the option to direct message someone Riot, what it's doing behind the scenes is making a private, invite only room, and inviting you 2 to the room all in one operation. Once that's done, it behaves just like a regular PM, but you can add someone to the conversation when you want. If you didn't want the other person to be able to add people, you could make a room where only you have permission to invite, and then invite them.

Right, but what servers are controlling this process? Which servers handle the messages?

The server which the creator of the room is using will start the process, but once a room is federated, they all equally control the process. You'll send a message to your server, which will then cause it to get mirrored to the other servers which have participants in said room. Even if your server goes down, the other people already in the room can still go on as normal, and the server you use will reconnect and pull in what it missed when it returns.

It looks good but does it have voice channels? That's the one thing a lot of these slack clones lack that discord has.

Okay so to use private messaging, I have to run a personal server?

No, you can register for an account on a public server, just like email.

It does, and video calls. You can also embed a widget for Jitsi in a room, which has all that, plus screensharing.

If I send a message to a family member who isn't in the Jow Forums server, then where does the message initally go? Or does it go to the Jow Forums server and then get distributed?

>Or does it go to the Jow Forums server and then get distributed?
Exactly that. Each server has a copy of the room that they know are linked, and they all keep each other in sync for the people in the room.

Nobody uses Gaycord except college stoners and Minecraft fuccbois.

Hmm... interesting. And as for Riot, how does that work? Is Riot a node in the Matrix network that acts on the behalf of users, or does their client use WebRTC?

Riot is a seperate application that just acts as a web client for interacting with the Matrix server. I believe it is using WebRTC behind the scenes for certain operations. The servers themselves are really the nodes, and those commonly hosted using something like Synapse at the moment: matrix.org/docs/projects/server/synapse.html. If you're a using a public server though, you don't have to worry about that part.

BASED RIOTPOSTER

Riot is awful for IRC, ironically. It doesn't pass commands through properly and can't join rooms with certain characters in the name.

riot's current client is such a piece of shit and literally everything about it is an intuitive laggy disaster

...

How do I get to use that sweet UI, OP?

>Discord is too popular
no, it's not. geocities was "too popular", myspace was "too popular", irc, msn and icq was too popular but are anyone using any of those things today?

looks like that be a link to .. not wordpress, not blogger, seems to be .. medium.

I'm not trying to say riot dot im will be a huge thing and replace discord, perhaps it will and perhaps it won't. there's no huge marketing budget behind it so it's not that likely. But saying something is "too big" to be replaced is just sillly, history shows this.

the chat log is pretty cringey and forced

Stop being retarded. IRC is fine as is, this is a different thing. Having voice and IRC-like chat with previews is pretty good. I personally dislike clicking any links on IRC, having it posted on the room with a preview is very convenient.

Well steam is changing their chat system up to be like discord. This could finally kill discord

Discord is the official chat platform of Jow Forums, get fucked shill.

looks more like slack than discord tbqhfam

why does this "marie keller" type smarter than she looks

Slack

reminder that one of the biggest servers running matrix is literally one for autists

Riot.im

mumble through website works
matrix works
steam works
discord works
ALL of the above work on every OS
does riot?
no

>does riot?
>no
Are you retarded?

riot uses matrix, you retarded subhuman

I hate the new Steam beta.
It's so bulky, it hurts my eyes.
I hate Discord and Skype too. I stopped having group calls with my friends.

>geocities, irc
who?

>IRC
ewww that thing doesn't even have Bitmoji nor Giphy integration, how am I supposed to express my feelings with only pure text?! trash...

How the fuck did you get this to be white?

Attached: Capture.png (308x829, 151K)

Does this piece of shit have PTT support?

looks like a Slack clone

>if you don't want people to log your shit, don't say controversial things
The absolute STATE of communication

Fuck you fag I thought that the gui update was finally out
Also matrix a shit until they finish that go backend

Implying you can delete something once posted to the net.
You have absolutely no idea of someone's saving logs without your knowledge. Just because you remove the source, doesn't mesn it doesn't still exist.

It's like when you ask matrix to redact something, the message still exists. Clients can choose to remove it if they want, and most official instances will reject redacted messages, but there's nothing stopping someone from modifying Synapse to receive them privately

bump

What’s Discord?

Disagree.

NuIRC

>literally a discord copy

No it's a Slack copy

Those died because better alternatives appeared. Riot does not seem like it has anything on Discord. It's open, supposedly, but none of Discord's audience cares about that.

Nah, every chat client that got popular is now not every popular. Previous champs like aim or skype were ubiquitous and gone a few years later.
It will happen to discord too.

WOW

IT'S FUCKING NOTHING AT ALL

Steam has a pretty nice chat now.

Too many faggots spamming their tranny servers gave me a bad image of discord.

>needing a chat in the first place
are there really people that have any friends they can talk to?

I know what IRC and slack are. Can someone please explain Discord. I am an adult non-gamer and have never had the need to use it.

>Nuno fernandez

Well, the post is about Riot. The slowness is an issue with Matrix itself, the crowded main server especially.

>Discord has run too long without competition
just because the competitors don't have millions in chinkbux to spend on shilling doesn't mean they're nonexistant mang

Why should I care about electron crap?
