They work but you have to use the phone activation for them. Had to do this recently to downgrade an x220t to its native Win7Pro install.
Of course, you still need the ISO that you can't directly download anymore--and it has to match the key, so Pro=Pro, Ultimate=Ultimate. I ended up grabbing a Pro ISO from IPTorrents (because why should my two retail Ultimate copies work, amirite?).

got a bunch of keys from MSDN when I was in BizSpark. When I "graduated" MS sent me an email listing all of the keys I claimed and said I could still use them.
2 years later: need to install W7 on something. try to use that page to get an ISO - nope doesnt work with MSDN keys. cant get one from MSDN either because non-active account.
fuck you Microsoft, I have a legal key, give me the god damn ISO. ended up torrenting one because fuck M$
