I rather like pinta, it does what Paint aught to be able to do by now. Only thing I don't like is their approach to the selection tool

Don't know Pinta, but try the global App-Menu (under Gnome: click the Name of the Program in the Topbar) and see if you can find the corresponding option. If this doesn't work try to press ALT and hope that a menu appears.
