Because it is functional and super easy to set up.
Our friends that are complete morons can use it because we just need to send them a link to the server, they don't need to type in an IP, or configure their audio, or deal with public/private keys, its all automatic.
I wish someone would make a completely open source and self host-able alternative that literally just copied every one of Discord's features and had the same UI and everything. People keep trying to do their own thing where Discord has really found the sweet spot on every feature.

Steam is shit. Mumble and IRC are a pain. Also this has an in-game overlay which makes it a prime gaming choice. You should have learned from the past 6 years that nobody gives a fuck about botnets.

Best way to do this would be to implement some kind of webui for mumble. Have a link that contains connection information. Your connection would be over SSL (SSL certs are super easy to get nowadays, thanks letsencrypt)

I tried to use Tox for a while, but it was no development anymore and its to hard to use or non-autistic persons. I'm not joking. I tried to convince my contacts but some just gave up and used Skype again.

Why hasn't anyone done this yet? There is obviously a market for it. This is definitely the kind of project I would donate to.

It's a platform that's free, like most. It works easily, works on the web browser and also works as a desktop client. It integrates easily with games. It looks good, and it has a lot of people on it. It's exactly like IRC, but more cozy feeling, because it has avatars, and easy to access text formatting. The writing isn't displayed in a monospace font along a white background (ala hexchat) - Though there are some IRC clients that provide a "dark theme" most of those are either clunky, outdated, or are dark themed by nature because they run on the terminal/TTY. That being said there aren't many cozy IRC clients around, unless you have a liking to command line interfaces and design - and, as you would expect, most young people do not like these things. They prefer instead the comforts of things like Discord. Anyone can make a Discord channel, and there are already a variety of Discord channels for every topic imaginable. Some are made up of Jow Forums users. Some are made up of other websites users. Some are made up of forum users. There is a lot of diversity to their platform, and just anyone can fit in there. Furry? You too have many, many spots.

It's universally appealing, anyone can use it, and it looks good. It doesn't get in the way. People can make friends on it and use it to socialize. That's why people use Discord.
