By law companies has to keep all economy related data for at least 6 years and some time 10
Therefore companies needs to have their old programs available for at least 6 years after they stopped using it.

"my text editor is really an operating system!" is a bad design and won't survive without life-support from the diehards. of course the diehard emacsies will live until ~2070 so it'll be a while, but the design is flawed.
