It's a really shitty and insecure CISC design. Current implementations are just getting worse. I hate to be that guy but no one needs compatibility with late 80s hardware. I like to dick around with m68k software but I do it in an emulator with no hardware acceleration, and it's faster than the original hardware. There's no reason to have compatibility with anything from before the year 2000 at this point. Even OS/2 that runs on CNC machines at work has been updated to Arca OS with newer hardware support. Even if someone could make an argument for a fuckton of legacy instructions, Intel and AMD could just make embedded boards with full compatibility that are slower and draw less power.
