Should I password my X61 bios? And what's the deal with the fingerprint? I really want to maximize my security

I just ordered a like new T450S for $440.

>i7-5600U
>8GB of memory
>256GB SSD
>1080P IPS non-touch display

How'd I do Jow Forums? It seems like the best blend of specs out of the box and doesn't require any modding to make it usable.

Reposting for new thread

Where's a good place to buy ThinkPad batteries that won't explode?
I have an X201 and a T400 with completely dead batteries and Lenovo ones are super expensive.
Just looking for one that isn't shit really.

>he actually bought one
hahahahah

I really hope for you it's bearly used.
Otherwise you overpaid big time

I'm selling my old laptop for slightly higher so it'll be a 1:1 swap more or less.

What makes a Thinkpad different from any other laptop?

KingSener on aliexpress

they use sanyo cells

had mine for 5 months

have had no negative wear yet

New ones? Nothing. Old ones? Build quality, ergonomics, expandability, durability. I think the last good Thinkpad was the T400. I have an R400 and a T60, they are far better built than something like the T420.

why the fuck did they get rid of the dpad on the x200t. and then get rid of most of the buttons on the X220T?

is 45-50 deg C good for an x230 doing basic web browsing and email?

peak 100% CPU utilization temp is ~80 deg C

I did repaste. but it was my first time ever and wondering if I did a shit job.

Those temps are perfectly fine, user.

because around 2008 or so was where everyone started removing features as a feature

>ThinkPad
>Cycling
>Taiwanese
Pretty cool

Maintainability, most parts can be replaced by yourself.

>buy i7 8gbRAM T420s for 200eur
>everything is super nice and clean
>when i plug in usb with linux iso on it it won't boot
>unplug it, boots
>plug it in while it's booting
>everything freezes
>try to open boot menu then plug it in
>boot menu freezes
>when i unplug the usb drive it unfreezes and continues normal operation
>it even continues to boot when i randomly remove it anytime during boot
what the fuck, /tpg/ why won't it let me install linux

I've got a T60 which is displaying red pixels when using Linux and on the BIOS splash screen. When using Windows it seems to work fine. Could anyone run manjaro xfce 17.1.11 on a T60 to check if this is a software or a hardware issue?

Attached: out.jpg (1280x957, 836K)

just a guess but check usb charging options in the bios

How did you install installation media on the usb?

can confirm, I have a T60 and T420 also, the T60 feels really weird but still better than another Lenovo (g70-50)

Alright. I'll try it and get back to you.

Did you use Rufus?
Because you probably fucked that up

i used some iso writing software on windows can't remember which one... i'm going to try with dd now
where are those again?

in bios

ok what now

Attached: IMG_20180714_173350.jpg (4032x3024, 2.74M)

if you have to ask
you probably should stay with windowns

>Just a heads-up, I just merged a branch that fixes trackpoint acceleration in libinput. The previous approach was simply broken, the new one is quite
similar to what we had before anyway - calculating speed from the deltas and
applying the acceleration curve from that. The curve is adjusted for
trackpoints with a relatively wide configurable range.

>Trackpoint data is mostly garbage and device-specific, so there's a magic
multiplier that is applied to the deltas. This multiplier replaces the
previous trackpoint range.

>Pointer acceleration testing feedback is usually
zero or so close to zero that the difference doesn't matter.

>Any pointer acceleration bugs that aren't accompanied by either some patches
or workable algorithms will be closed as cantfix from now on.

Try creating installation media to usb with dd and see if it works, otherwise you could try to disable UEFI i guess.

I currently have a X220 but I hate the crappy screen res. So I'm thinking something from the T4** series.

Is T440s decent? I'm hesitant because of the strange mouse buttons.

Attached: t440s.jpg (929x768, 72K)

Trust me if you are a programmer and don't need to run crappy windows programs on it 768p is the way to go

>$440
Did he suck you off too?

The t440 kind of sucks, I would get a t430 1600x900 and if you want 1080p ips just do the chink upgrade. You can replace the keyboard to the old one if you want as well. If you don't want to do any modding, get a t450.

I do program, but I also do data visualization and 768p just isn't great for that :/

>A specific multiplier will apply to all users with the same laptop model, so proceed with caution. You must be capable/willing to adjust device quirks, build libinput from source and restart the session frequently to adjust the multiplier. If this does not apply, wait for someone else with the same hardware to do this.

is anyone else still considering the A485 despite all the shit internals it has compared to the T480? It's the same fucking chassis so i can only imagine this is just anti-competition shit between intel and AMD again. I'd still be interested if it was at least the same FHD screen on the X1 Carbon, bu it's not that.

are PSrefs pretty much set in stone or is there a possibility for WQHD to be an option later?

No issue on my end. Have you tried any other distros, like Arch or Antergos?

I've tried xfce and kde, both on manjaro. Just ran windows for 2h and it started showing red pixels as well. Now I'm certain that it's a hardware fault. Thanks for testing it for me!

No worries. I know the T60 has graphics issues on some distros so it was worth looking into.

Does Windows provide better battery life than Linux?

>X1 Carbon
>spending US$200 just to get an i7-8550u + 16GB RAM over i5-8250u + 8GB
why am i so stupid, i know it's going to throttle and it's a tiny performance improvement, but man it feels nice to have a fully loaded setup. It's all soldered on (including the fucking RAM) so i have to decide from day 1.

Marginally on later models.

My t60 struggle with playing 1080p youtube, what to do?

Have you tried using youtube-viewer?

I think you expect a bit too much from a 12yo laptop

Attached: 1500844548243.png (222x293, 148K)

I just got an X220. WHich m.2 SSD would you recommend?

I'm tech illiterate and I'm trying my best to nevigate terms like mSata, m.2, PCIe, NVMe, etc.

Encrypt your hard disk.

ATI?
Your shit is dying

youtube-dl
mpv

Broadcom CrystalHD card, or upgrade the internals to a T70.

>tfw i'm too poor for a t70

Attached: 881.jpg (150x190, 27K)

X220 doesn't have an M.2 slot. Do you want to have 2 storage drives? Because if thats what you want then you're only option is an mSata SSD. However, the mSata is slower because it is SATA 2 (3 Gb/s) on the X220.

Yeah, you're right. Sorry, I got confused between mSata and m.2.

I want windows on my 2.5'' SSD and one or two Linux Distros on the mSata SSD.

My 2.5'' is small, so I don't want to partition and share it.

I just bought an X220 for $110 burger bucks did I fuck up?

that reminds me. is joanne tech lover like doing porn now?

I would go with Samsung 860 EVO mSata. There are probably slightly cheaper options, but you just can't go wrong with Samsung SSDs.

Thanks!
I think there'll be cheaper on Prime Day, too.

if you are also gonna switch the keyboard back to the old one you better just get the t420 in the first place what the fuck

I said if you want to, you also get usb 3 with the T430 and an ivy bridge cpu by default.

Can i put a 1080p screen in an x260 without soldering?

Also what is the earliest x model that i can put a 1080p screen in without soldering

Why no chink has developed a WQHD mod for the T520/T530?

It's intel

x240

How much is a bog-standard i5 TN x230 worth in 2018? Is it worth it to repair and resell this?

Attached: thoughts.png (791x372, 41K)

My 12 year old T61 can do all of that just fine

>mfw Middleton'd it, T9500 and 8gb RAM, SSD

anyone have any experience with these cheapo batteries off amazon? price seems nice, but I don't want them to make my x220 go kaboom

Attached: Snipaste_2018-07-14_16-02-50.png (660x196, 34K)

Alright, fuck it I'm doing the 2960XM upgrade on my E6520, it is a 55w chip will it be okay on the 45w cooler? I ran a 45w 2630QM on the 35w cooler and it was just fine. How is the battery life on the XM?

Assuming they're what you buy on ebay, the T61 battery I bought shorted out the charging fuse, probably because it didn't quite fit just right and I might have bridged a pin or something, but the T60 I have it charges and works fine. Gets about 3 hr battery life, 4 if I turn the screen down

I was always planning on getting either a T480 or A485 with a 1080p screen because I don't think the WQHD screen is worth the price, especially since I have a main PC build.

Also, I want to play a bit of casual vidya and a WQHA screen would be too much resolution for the iGPUs, and choosing a lower resolution than the native display resolution usually looks really bad in games.

Additionally, I don't think Windows handles WQHD very well with a 14" screen.

The only real upside to the WQHD screen is that it has clearly better colors and brightness, but I'd just use my TV or other monitor, if I really cared about that, the WQHD still doesnt even have anywhere near the greatest colors.

Aside from the screen, what else matters that's different?

Would it be worth it to upgrade x220 i5 2520m motherboard to x230 i7 one?

There's the meme going about locked bios etc here but I'm contemplating because I'll have bare motherboard to easily flash keyboard mod + whitelist before the installation in chassis.

Coming from someone who upgraded to the 2630QM i7 from that 2520m, the difference was night and day in performance while only using superficial amounts more battery life, do it.

What wire is for webcam and mic on the x220t?

hmm. found this one on ebay... Price almost seems too good to be true... There is a lot of positive feedback on the listing though.

Anyone know what kind of battery life a OEM 9-cell would get you on an x220? I know it depends on the OS and other factors, but I'm just looking for a ballpark number.

Attached: Snipaste_2018-07-14_16-43-37.png (948x396, 82K)

>$20 9-cell
use common sense you nerd

It's chinese shit with recycled cells.

I figured it was too good to be true.

What is a normal price for a 9 cell?

Could be done desu
I used to buy 1000mAh 18650 cells for 2 dollars each
OEM ones cost like 120 dollary doos

NVM 60 dollars

Where's my princess?

Attached: FaceApp_1528339143524.jpg (1280x1280, 680K)

Sleeping with me tonight

Fuck you by the way buy OEM batteries.

So I'm thinking about upgrading the CPU of my T420 to a Quad, what should i go with?

I could go with a i7 2840QM wich is 45W but im not sure if the temps are safe, or I could go with the 3632QM wich is 35W but its an Ivy-Bridge CPU wich needs coreboot, and I don't know if coreboot is stable.
What should I go with?

Attached: L8BXnlw.jpg (868x661, 35K)

mSATA for OS, HDD for data.

i use a kingston, no complaints.

>Kingston SSD no complaints
Becareful what you say user

>KEYBOARD RIDE IS SERIOUS AND QUICK

I use four chink KingDians, no complaints.

FUCK

I got the t450 touchpad and I installed it on the t440 and windows won't recognize the damn buttons. Everything works just fine on Linux, so I know it's a windows thing. It still believes I have the other stupid touchpad. It's a driver thing I'm sure, but what exactly do I do?

HELP

Which are the recommended new Thinkpads?

None of them.

I just dropped a lil bit of water on my T520 keyboard. Turned it off inmediately, dried as much as I could with a piece of cloth and then using thin toilet paper I passed it between the keys to soak as much as possible of water underneath the keys. Before turning it off I noticed an apparent ghost right click (as in right click seemed to be constantly pressed). How fucked am I? It definitely was not enough for it to pass down through the integrated water drain but it was enough to wet things underneath. Is the rubber dome enough to protect it?

Any experiences like this you guys have had? After drying as much as I could I turned it upside down it's stilo dry so it really wasn't that much.

Attached: 1531573867030.jpg (764x713, 309K)

i gave my T530 to my mom and it's been sitting in the kitchen soaking up a shit of oil, I think some keys are indeed unresponsive now but i don't know why you're so worried about a little water. Keyboard are meant to be replaced eventually.
