My main hobby is composing, recording, mixing and mastering. Basically all steps in producing recorded music. I have my own studio at home, built by myself with hardware eqs, comps, acoustic treatment, guitar and bass amps, mic, guitars, basses, keyboards, etc.
I can tell you that the most important component in any audio chain is the weakest one. Basically, where you save, you wreck your chain.
The most overlooked part of the audio chain (by people that just want to listen to music, not mixing and mastering engineers) is the listening room. It's where the sound is going to be traveling through, and it will act as an eq depending on the geometry of the room and where you and the speakers are positioned.

So, step 1: buy or build broadband absorving acoustic panels. Primacoustica sells some nice kits of compressed glass fiber ones. You want something very dense, either galss fiber or rockwool. "Acoustic" foam is a fucking meme, and is absolutely useless. The usual problem frequencies in rooms are the lows and subs, and acoustic foam doesn't work on those.

Now, most audiophile equipment is not bad, but overpriced and often snake oil. It also has pleasing eq character associated to speaker architecture, which I find to be a bad thing, since it's not transparent. Transparent equipment allows you to hear evey as it actually is in the waveform, but is loses that pleasing character that I was talking about, but that just means it's not altering the sound.

If you want my recommendation, get some Yamaha HS8 active studio monitors and a good usb external audiocard. Plug the card to your pc, and play everything from there, hook up the card to your monitors. 400€ already is more than enough to have a card with decent converters.

If you treated your room, with just this equipment you will have a very balanced, powerful and transparent sound. Also, the monitors are active, you don't need an amplifier.

A note on vacuum tubes: they are used because when the signal clips, the overdrive has second order harmonics, which is interpreted by the human ear as a pleasing characteristic. However, vacuum tubes are notoriously not transparent, and alter the sound that passes through them. If you want ro listen to music, you want to listen to what the mixing and master engineers gave you, they already speant a lot of time making the stuff sound good. Altering that sound by putting it through vacuum tubes is knly going yo alter that balance. Obviously, some circuits with tubes are decently transparent, but in those, the tube serves no distinct purpose, and basically could be removed.

It's not a copypasta, take it as you will. I actually spent my time writing that shit trying to give you actual good advice from the perspective of someone that had to try different stuff to get a proper listening environment for mixing music for different albums. These are my conclusions.
