What is the purpose of a Chromebook? This seems like a really good deal for a bare bare barebones laptop, but I'm not sure what exactly the Chrome OS is unable to do compared to a regular laptop. As far as I can tell, is it essentially a big tablet that's pretty much just for checking emails, streaming and chrome apps? I'm in need of an inexpensive laptop for some office work type stuff so I'm aware I'd have to use the google variants of microsoft office as well as just something for light browsing when I tether it to my phone's data plan.
I'm aware it's not for gayming unless it can play simple apps or some shit because I have no need for something like that.
You can't do shit on it, it's literally just a big phone with a big keyboard.
Jeremiah Allen
pretty sure you can install linux on it
Jaxson Reyes
It's great for web browsing and using google's office programs. Can't do anything else though. Despite what Jow Forums says they can be capable machines if you use them correctly.
Connor Hill
A big phone you can't make calls or send texts with Also >2gb of RAM Have fun visiting any modern websites with that
Logan Sanders
Is it possible to upgrade it with an ssd and install Windows on it?
Owen Walker
No, best you can get is a gimped linux
Wyatt Thomas
It's got a celery cpu, you should be able to install windows on it
Joseph Campbell
Cheap computer to give kids because no matter what you give them they're going to break it
Nolan Powell
>giving kids a computer Don't
Andrew Williams
I know
Its better to let them play outside and read books but many adults just give them a cheap tablet or whatever
Jacob Foster
>windows >2gb ram >16gb storage Pick one
Michael Stewart
He said he wanted to jam in a HDD. Sure, it'd run like shit, but it would "work"
Alexander Torres
RAM and Storage (more likely eMMC) is solder on. The RAM my not be. You can run a lightweight Linux OS on it if you want more then just using web apps and surfing the internet.
Robert Reed
Dell is selling a 15 inch ispiron that is an actual laptop right now. 4 gigs of ddr4, new intel processor. Get that instead the specs on that cromebook are a joke.
Jacob Campbell
*Dell is selling an actual laptop for 175 right now
Tyler Carter
2GB of ram while having to use fucking Chrome to do everything? That's some shit idea right here!
Chrome is way less ram intensive on android/chrome os
Parker Walker
so this is the power... of botnet
Sebastian Wood
had a chromebook in high school. it didn't do much but I liked it. used google docs, youtube, went on some forums, etc. it didn't even run many android apps at the time and it ran those through some janky hack. I think those are supported now. I dropped it a broke the screen before I got around to installing linux, so I just plugged it into my tv and ran youtube.tv
Isaiah Young
ChromeOS is basically Linux. How is Chrome less intensive on it?
Benjamin Rivera
What a Chromebook can do: Run Google Chrome.
Thats basically it.
But given that 99% of people just get on a computer to go online anyway, that means they're basically suitable for 99% of people anyway. Facebook, Netflix, Google Docs, Paying Bills, Checking bank accounts, surfing amazon, reddit, playing candy crush/shitty social games, youtube, etc.
So, yeah, it does one thing. And that one thing isn't even unique. But it does that one thing pretty damn well for the cost.
I've got my desktop to do actual computer shit on. The only thing I need a laptop for is couch surfing and not using my phone when I'm out of the house to do stuff like order a pizza at a friends, look up shit to do when I'm in another city, read a PDF somewhere, or other shit on the web. I'm not going to fire-up a fucking IDE in the middle of B&N when I'm having a lazy weekend. I'm not going to ignore my desktop to use my laptop when I'm at home and wanting to try to play a game. I'm not going to want to render a video and edit my logo in my hotel room because I'm not a faggot youtuber.
I don't need a laptop to do much. Just be a better platform than a Tablet. Which a Chromebook does.
Ian Fisher
It's primarily to ensure that everyone has access to interracial bbc and cuck porn.
Dominic Butler
You can get mobile versions of office 365 on the google webstore. 2Gbs is barely anything by todays standards but you're better off with it running Chrome OS than windows. If you install linux on it, it could potentially be a decent computer.
Oliver Gray
You can also use ssh and any remote desktop protocol I do find 4GB RAM a minimum, though
Evan Scott
>2gb ram
lolnah

>What is the purpose of a Chromebook? Cheap, disposable laptop capable of only the most basic tasks. My mom has one, it's been pretty great for me. 100% minimized the amount of times she's had to call me to fix it. She was using a Windows before.
>2gb of RAM >Have fun visiting any modern websites with that This. Holy fuck. Chromebooks are quite awful in that regard. Visiting anything other than Jow Forums is a painful experience full of wincing, not knowing if the machine will crash or not.
Isaac Baker
I have a Chromebook and I can tell you; no. No, it is not. Chromebooks with 2 GB of RAM only barely work at all.
Liam Gomez
What is Windows XP
Levi Murphy
>Visiting anything other than Jow Forums is a painful experience full of wincing, not knowing if the machine will crash or not.
As opposed to visiting Jow Forums with a decent or powerful computer, in which case the machine doesn't crash and you can completely enjoy the painful experience full of wincing
Aiden Jones
If you want a basic Linux desktop they're quite good. I replaced an old netbook with a Chromebook and added a decent sdcard and it works well for fun posting and basic tasks
Julian Taylor
>it's literally just a big phone nu-Jow Forums everyone
