GBoard is functionally the best keyboard, but the AOSP keyboard is similar and without the botnet.

KiiKeybord is still better than anything present on the market despite being abandoned years ago (except text prediction, but that's no biggie).

Tried Simple Keyboard, the tolerance between the qwerty row and accidentally placing the claret on screen was too low - kept placing the cursor in between letters while using the top row.

OP: use AOSP keyboard, works without gapps. If you need the "swype" functions, install the "swypelib.zip" in recovery (it can be found online easily).

install lineage, or a similar AOSP-based ROM. Otherwise compiling it yourself is the most reliable option. I run lineage OS without gapps (not microg, that's just a placebo imo) and it's worked fine off the first boost, no complaints. theme via substratum, no complaints

Personally, I think that SwiftKey is the best keyboard. Not sure if Microsoft has turned it into a completely botnetted abomination or not but it works great on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

I felt like it was a little more accurate before Michaelsoft came on board but it might just be a placeebee
