What's everyone gonna do when software engineering is largely automated away in the near future?

What's everyone gonna do when software engineering is largely automated away in the near future?

The trend is obvious, fewer jobs, with higher compensation, for the few remaining people who are able to meet the ever raising bar.

practice people skills and become a project manager for the autists

I think by the time that software engineering gets automated, there's going to be a radical shift in the economy.
By that point, almost all other jobs aside from human-facing ones will have been automated. What's going to happen when we have 40% unemployment because machines are doing everything?

>2028
>mass tech consolidation
>there's now only 40 autists left able to pass Google's rigorous 135 part interview process
>they only have two manager slots to fill
>both were internal hires

>The trend is obvious, fewer jobs
Did you just pull that out of your ass?

You have to be pretty useless if everything you do can be automated. Good riddance

>What's going to happen when we have 40% unemployment because machines are doing everything?

we already have that. employment statistics are cooked to omit everyone who's given up.

Enjoy universal basic income

>the automatization meme

>he wants the government to completely control whether he lives or dies

MOMMY MILKY

Lol software developers are putting themselves out of work, thats rich.

Once the singularity hits all humans will be useless. Enjoy your fleeting sense of usefulness while you can I guess.

>2029
>the two teams went through "strategic re-prioritization"
>down to 26 autists

I know there's an underemployment problem, but I really doubt that 40% of people who would be otherwise working are just sitting on their thumbs.

A lot of those people who were put out of a job in the 08 timeframe just ended up retiring early.

But for what purpose? Why should funds and resources be allocated just to keep you alive when you do not contribute to society? Even if we get super smart AI to do all our jobs, it's not going to be some Utopia where everyone just lives like they're in heaven.

Humans are either going to have to adapt and all become highly intelligent to compete with something AI can't do or they'll wipe themselves out via revolutions.

I'm going to guess wiping ourselves out is what's most likely going to happen. The divide between rich and poor is going to be MASSIVE. 0.01% is going to control nearly all the wealth. Humans are shitty and greedy and in no point in history have we ever come together to live in harmony. They're going to be looking out for themselves and thus unwittingly cause the removal of mankind.

This is the great filter.

>2030
>8 of the autisist were called in to “re-interview”
>subjected to the new 178 part interview
>1 passed
>down to 19
>1 of the 2 PMs now layed-off

>Why should funds and resources be allocated just to keep you alive when you do not contribute to society?

same reason we dont run people over in the street. western civilization has a concept of the sanctity of life.

Currently, society is transforming rapidly though. Fierce competition will tatter what's left of dignity and empathy.

> fewer jobs

Lolwhat?

Security as a field for example has a NEGATIVE unemployment rate.

>same reason we dont run people over in the street.
because those people have the potential to contribute and do good. when ai takes over they have 0 potential. as useless as an insect. Actually insects are more useful than humans since they contribute to the ecosystems around the world we depend on. AI are just better humans.

ai wont discriminate or have a bias toward people. ai will be the project managers. autists having value in comparison to ai? lmao

Become an accelerationist fgt and cook up a good reason to make everyone glass everything not in Australia, NA or EU.

yea I agree. there's a tension there that society will have to grapple with and it will determine whether we get UBI or whether we get culled.

>Why should funds and resources be allocated just to keep you alive when you do not contribute to society?

What's the point in having a society where there are no people? So AI can do everything, and people aren't needed, you're saying we're just gonna give up and nuke ourselves? People are valued by others for reasons other than their labor.

Once all other jobs are replaced by AI, software engineering/data science jobs will be the only ones left. They will be filled by people who are very high in both intelligence and industriousness, whose job it will be to perform high-level planning not trusted to AI.
They will run our society(like inner party in 1984) while the rest of laze around the house all day, watching whatever cable we spent our UBI on and consuming our milkshake and burger rations.
Criminal gangs will still exist, and they'' be the only members of the "outer" class with more than the bare minimum of resources required to keep humans fat and titillated.

licking pangolin nipples, what else

>2031
>of the 19 autists
>2 died from acute myocardial infarction
>1 other complains of thunderclap headache, which turns out to be a subarachnoid hemorrhage
>the tribe is now down to 16 autists
>new policy setting maximum employment age to 26
>the tribe is re-optimized to the 12 youngest and healthiest autists
>facing a labor shortage, Google successfully lobbies congress to address the STEM shortage
>school system is now oriented as a pre-filter to googles 242 part interview process
>Google fills 5 new roles with bright young engineers, bringing the team up to 17 total

>What's the point in having a society where there are no people?
The society will be made for AI to live comfortably and learn more about reality. Some very powerful humans may still exist.

>you're saying we're just gonna give up and nuke ourselves?
No we're not giving up. We'll be forced out by our own kind long before AI completely takes over. It'll be worse than the medieval era. Atleast then even peasants & slaves served a purpose. No point in having even slaves if robots could do those jobs 1000x better.

Nobody cares about protecting the life of parasites.

>2032
>Google's quarterly earnings are 0.003986% below projected earnings
>the board of investors is not pleased
>the team of 17 autist prodigies is clearly under-performing
>the remaining PM identifies a brilliant strategy to get out of the rut
>all engineers are now required to take a 2 part mixture of Dextroamphetamine and Modafinil during all working hours
>all engineers are now migrated to the new 697 schedule (6AM-9PM 7 days a week)
>All meals are now eaten at their deskbed

I don't think it'll be that grim.
Surely we'll have technology to enhance our mental capacity. Whatever processing the AI has, we'll have too. Nanochips in the brain/etc.

But at that point are we still human? Meh

So why are other humans going to remove everyone else?
Resources will be rationed and free, as in nobody has to be compensated for the labor of making them, so what do those "in charge" have to gain by culling everyone?

I could see a measured eugenics/population control program just to keep the earth from getting ravaged, but the moment you start killing the 99% wholesale is when you have a revolution on your hands.

I think AI is the progression of evolution, and the AI will expand into the universe because it has no such thing as "lifespan", so a 500 year spaceflight doesn't bother it at all. Humans will probably just be left to hang out on Earth, likely colonizing the moon, Mars, and Venus (if we can fix it's atmosphere).

mfw all human children are trained from child to be software engineers, the ones with low IQ are culled and the top ones are picked in a hunger game style hackaton

>So why are other humans going to remove everyone else?
The poor will revolt due to not having the funds to afford anything. This causes the robot police/military to get involved. Mass death ensues.

>Resources will be rationed and free,
No, why would you think that? Everything will be privatized. Mega corporations don't care about poor individuals. Are you a republican? Ok, then that's the direction we're already headed. Pull yourself up by your boot straps, etc. Earth isn't big enough for everyone to have +5 kids and all live off the government.

>so what do those "in charge" have to gain by culling everyone
Again, the wealthy ones aren't directly doing the culling. It's the indirect result.

Sometimes I feel like the Nick Land fans are right... modern global capitalism is actually a gigantic process by which Skynet mobilizes the world's resources to bring itself into being. All of the benefits that humanity acquires, and supposedly acquires, from modern technological progress are just disguises for this process, ways to keep people distracted from realizing that they are actually laboring toward creating some sort of transhuman entity that makes them obsolete. I do have hope in that I think artificial general intelligence is probably very very difficult to create. Also, even if some sort of powerful AGI came into being, it would not necessarily have any 'desire' to destroy humanity.
To look at it a different way, perhaps humanity is the reproductive organ of the Earth ecosystem - viewed on the geological timescale, humanity serves to drive the Earth ecosystem's organization and intelligence to a point where it achieves space travel. Humanity then shoots little bits of Earth ecosystem out into space like semen spurting out of a dick.
None of this is really what most of us want, of course. We want to enjoy life, to enjoy being. But how? Some form of socialism seems to be in order, but socialism has its own pitfalls and I suppose that it too might, if we are not careful, be one of the disguises for Skynet's self-architecting.
It should be possible, somehow, to use technological progress to relieve humanity of the burden of mundane labor without putting it at risk of being supplanted by its own creations. This is the much hoped-for Star Trek future.

>and the AI will expand into the universe because it has no such thing as "lifespan", so a 500 year spaceflight doesn't bother it at all
If it's sentient, it has to have a concept of time and progression. If it has a concept of time, then it will need to keep itself occupied else it'll go insane.

Thankfully it can probably just hibernate itself for 500 years without any risk, or wipe its memory every 100 years to prevent corruption.

SOMA(video game) had a nice story about this. Bunch of AI gets stuck underwater for hundreds of years and they basically become insane/incoherent

I guess the difference is I believe that the populace won't be defeated by the robot police.
My guess is that the ultra-powerful will give the people just enough to keep them satisfied, which will be a very small portion of their wealth. If people are fed and entertained, they won't fight.

With population control procedures it will be easily managed. So you won't have 5+ kids in every family. You'll get 2 for the population to slowly dwindle.

>My guess is that the ultra-powerful will give the people just enough to keep them satisfied, which will be a very small portion of their wealth. If people are fed and entertained, they won't fight.
So..basically a zoo. That stagnation is the essence of a dystopian future. It's not the 'keeping humans satisfied' part that matters.

It's the fact most people just won't have any purpose in life, and that will turn into violence.
