they all are bad but anyway, would you like something that is meant for cmd line, KDE, Gnome or Universal Linux?

thunar

It's called your terminal emulator you baka

Dolphin.

OP here just looking for something with id3 tags for basically anybody who's not a binary bootlick and then some

pcmanfm, ranger

spacefm, the most customizable gui file manager

Ranger if you like the command line, otherwise I use Thunar.

XFE seems to be universally forgotten. It doesn't use any frameshits like *kit or upower/disks for stuff like mounting or executing as root, heavily customizable, works beautifully on my *kit-free macheen with IceWM. Shame it's no longer actively developed, but I'd argue it doesn't need any more features, it does exactly what it needs to and what I want already.

how about file manager that looks like NEXTStep?

wp user, wp indeed
while I didn't think Thunars plugin even worked
anymore I will check some of these out. fuck you
guys for besting my meme.

ls, cd, pwd, mv, cp, cat

mc

now use that to find an image of a red dog in a folder with >1000 images.
also find porn with sasha grey in a folder with >1000 videos.

pacmanfm

Then use 'find', 'file', and an image viewer. Maybe try a bulk rename utility to fix your fucked up unsorted files

>Then use 'find', 'file', and an image viewer
what? that'd take hours, who not just skim the thumbnails. are you masochistic?

>Maybe try a bulk rename utility to fix your fucked up unsorted files
nice "solution" you got there. guess I'll stick with graphical file managers

there's nothing stopping you from generating thumbnails with ffmpeg and embedding them on an html page

>there's nothing stopping you from generating thumbnails with ffmpeg and embedding them on an html page
and how is this more convenient than just using a graphical filemanager?

no good graphical filemanagers

ranger

write your own, only way to make sure that it covers your use case.

nice

ranger is pretty comfy

this, the desktop support is a plus if you want to run a WM and render icons on the screen so normies instantly like your desktop.
I wish there was a wmaker style file explorer. That would be pretty cool.

vifm

I'd just like a file manager that works like the OSX finder - i.e. you have good thumbnails, previews, miller columns, customizable toolbars, tags, and search which actually fucking works.

And it should be fast too.
Thunar has almost all the bases covered but it doesn't have built in search. You need a few outside programs for search thumbnails, etc.

$ vim Documents

xfe is very lightweight and I like to use it, but thunar is cool too

Dired inside emacs

They're all complete dogshit but the least dogshit is probably Dolphin.
