I've only used windows until now. I'm about to do it guys

I choose Linux Mint but I want it to be as fast as possible. Is xfce the right choice?

Xfce is correct but Mint is not. Good luck.

cinnamon is the only reason to use mint at all. stick with it. i've found that it's easiest to use cinnamon if you're switching from windows.

What should I do then? I don't know shit about all of this but I want to learn. Isn't a friendly environment the best option for a beginner?

don't listen to that user. mint is fine.

but xubuntu is better for xfce in my opinion

personally, i use kubuntu

I see, I'm going to use mint for while and then I will think about what I'm going to do from there. Thanks

it's happening

no problem user

make sure to verify the ISO afterwards

I have a 1TB HDD and I want to use 100 GB for the OS and the rest for media stuff. I NTFS compatible with linux mint? I don't want to download everything again

ok

NTFS works with linux, except you can't have unix style permissions with NTFS, so you won't be able to run linux programs from your NTFS partition. I suggest backing up your stuff and re-partitioning as ext4

Will I be able to download movies and tv shows to that partition (ntfs one)? As I'm testing it I don't really know if I'm going to stick to it so I don't want to do permanent changes yet.

yes, you will, as long as the ntfs-3g is installed, and i would assume it comes with mint by default

UMA DELICIA

>linux mint
NO.
>systemd
>piss poor aesthetic
>no minimal install (to my knowledge)
Go with Slackware, Parabola, Devuan, or even unironically Gentoo.
For beginners, go with Void.
DON'T TOUCH LINUX MINT, UBUNTU, DEBIAN, OR ARCH EVER.

OP go with Windows 10 distro. No SystemD.

>but I want it to be as fast as possible
GENTOO!

>slows down cpu
If you have a good CPU, I would still suggest Gentoo over Linux Mint.

I screw up and erased the whole driver. Doesn't really matter. Let's start fresh.

don't listen to this user

>shilling autism distros to beginners

Fazemos o que podemos

Don’t bother with NTFS then

I am entirely correct.
systemd is not fun. I am suggesting him all the best. Shut your fucking face, stop sabotaging him.

Linux has spectre AND heartbleed. lovely job OP.

no u

>systemd isn’t fun
>shills gentoo
You’re fucking kidding right? It’s like you want to scare him away.

Mint is the way of the dog. If you want XFCE and something Ubuntu-based, then Xubuntu is easily the best option.

Arch Linux or Manjaro are the best distros, but perhaps not the most beginner friendly.

all those were patched, and every OS has spectre, not just linux

Yeah, let's shit on the guy actually giving a shot to this whole thing.

I will learn about everything you just said in the following months, but now I'm going to stick with this. To many options is not always a good thing. Thanks anyway

I said unironically even Gentoo. Doesn't mean I necessarily suggest it for him, but it's an option.
Then I said that for beginners, Void. Void is the perfect beginner distro.

let him form his own opinion

What's the best torrent client for Linux? I lot of people on private trackers praised Transmission but I used qbitorrent. Which one is better?

not him but what the hell are you talking about user? gentoo is good for old and new computers. obviously compile times are going to be longer on older hardware but once it's done it runs incredibly smooth and would defiantly beat bloated linux mint when it comes to performance

Mint is perfectly fine as a first distro, although I'd suggest moving to something else once you're a bit more comfortable with Gahnoo/Linux in general.
t. started with Mint and now running Glorious Gentoo.

>unironically suggesting gentoo as the first distro
I use Gentoo too, but let's be real, fellas.

I will keep that in mind

now how do I make this not look so ugly?

Install Slackware.

go here and find some themes
cinnamon-look.org/

Open the menu, there should be a settings tab or something
Open “appearance” and “window manager”. Go to town
>i want more themes
Get XFCE themes online, extract them, and drop them into /home/your username/.local/share/themes. Make the themes folder if isn’t there and they will show in appearance or window manager settings. “.local” is hidden, press ctrl + H in your home folder to see it.
XFCE is very flexible, you can do pretty much anything with it. Fuck with the settings and right click stuff.

Don't get memed by Jow Forums.
Mint is piece of shit, xfce is subpar DE. If you want something that works otb take Manjaro KDE.
But my advice would be: put everything important on removable drive and give each interesting distro few days to week and see what works for you best.
Another good distro would be OpenSuse Tumbleweed.
Once again, don't listen to hipster neckbeards telling you about RAM usage and other shit. Don't go minimal until you decide it will speed up your work flow.
Good luck user

why would anyone want something like this? Just do a hackintosh.

Attached: 12312.jpg (600x400, 104K)

Ok guys, here's the thing.

my main machine is a hackintosh that I built for learning web development (front end). I really want to test this Mint thing on a SSD so I wonder if I could still use it to learn how to code + design interfaces. I know that web alternatives to Adobe XD and Sketch exists, but are they actually good?

I know it's perfect possible to do web development on a linux machine, but what about the design part?

qbittorrent

enjoy overheating your computer waiting for something to compile

don't fall for the gentoo meme

Friendly reminder every machine at Google runs a custom ubuntu. All of their development tools are for ubuntu.

my computer doesn't get very hot at all. in fact I can still use it normally while something is compiling. are you using a fucking mac?

>sudo apt
>reboot
>Internet is fucked

"Switching" is stupid teenshit. Run a few different Linux distros in virtual machines then choose what you like based on YOUR experience.

It's free, it's easy. it's efficient. All my PCs get guest OSs.

THIS!....still didn't stop me from distro hopping but I eventually settled on one that has been mentioned many times in this thread

If you want your OS to be as fast as possible, just use Windows 7
Even Lubuntu is slower on my computer than Windows 7

reddit.com/r/unixporn/

ignore the ugly, familiarize yourself first with the OS.

>linking to reddit
are you baiting?

I liked it so far. Go almost every app I used on Windows but the navigation feels less smooth than Windows 10. Maybe it's a driver thing?

This machine uses Intel HD4600 Graphics btw.

It's super retarded how the themes and user interface size is handled. The border size of a window is tied to the theme, and so is the icons (min/max/close). Last I knew the panel buttons and stuff were all baked, so if you wanted to make them bigger you would've had to edit theme files AND make new icons and shit.

I really like Mint (for general use, I've had to use Arch-based for reasons) but the user interface controls are pretty shit. Only complaint.

Check out Windows 10 workspaces/virtual desktops. I used them all the time for work (I had 5). You have to disable some graphical features to stop the blurring when switching desktops, but it's also tied to the blur which happens when you min/max windows... a double bonus because it's annoying and time wasting.

P.s. I changed my virtual switch keys to ctrl-windows-left and ctrl-windows-right, because by defaults it's shift-alt-tab or some other insanity. I changed my Linux workspace switch keys to the same combination.

>DE on linux
you're basically doing a downgrade. If you need a DE use windows.

the only reason to use Mint is for cinnamon. otherwise use xubuntu.

Fucking (You)

Yeah, imo. I find other mint versions to be bloated

Mint Xfce is pretty great and imo better than xubuntu.

word of advice
try before you "buy"
