So my brother gave me his computer

so my brother gave me his computer...

yikes

what program are you using for pic related?

smart defrag

just format

reminds me of these red-glowing server decks in the original Fallout

>defragmenting your hard drive

wow, feels like i'm in fucking 1997 all over again. linux solved this problem a decade ago. how does microsoft get away with shipping a 20 year old filesystem in their newest products?

Because NTFS is still faster and more reliable than hobby freeturd file systems.

Sir,you're mental illness is showing.

(You)

>no argument

>Because NTFS is still faster and more reliable
source, pajeet ?

Win 7 already had automatic defragmentation. No idea what you're on about.

SSD Dont have this problem
Also people who don't fill 80~90% of their main system drive/partition.

GNU/Linux can read + write a mounted ntfs partition that's badly fragmented faster than the windows that's on it.

Give it back, Jamal

>source: my ass

>so my brother gave me his computer
Woah, it is beautiful in its ugliness.
Too bad there is no empty space. You can't defrag it at all.

nah, you just cant defrag ssd because of limited rewrites

>not using UltraDefrag

what os? windows should automatically defrag when in idle since win 7

on a side note, be a bro and get him a cheap 120gb ssd for his os

>source: kernel.org
you can also find it on git.

>Windows thinks my raid arrays are SSDs
>They've been in use for 3 years now
>Didn't know there was a command to manually defrag
>14% fragmentation with 1.4 fragments per file average
Well, that could have been worse.

You're in that curious middle range of technical proficiency- you know enough to run a defrag tool and interpret its results, but you still refer to "a computer" inclusive of its current OS installation, and digging through it with tools like these still seems like a better idea to you than just wiping it.

Not dissing you, just pointing it out. We were all at that point once. Go ahead and wipe that thing

you can defrag ssds all day long if you want but you shouldn't do it because ssds aren't affected by disk defragmentation to the degree mechanical drives are because ssds don't have a seek time and they handle random reads very well

you're telling me I've been waiting all day for nothing?

careful i lost literally all of my data from years of backups by defragging with thirdparty app

>not having multiple backups
lul

but my brother told to, and he has games that wouldn't even able to have gotten on here

What is defragmenting?

*me not to

OK, so my assumption is that your brother has asked you to fix his computer but has asked you not to wipe it. This is most likely because he's afraid of losing data, which is fair enough. You need to explain to him that you need to
a) back up all his data to an external drive
b) wipe and reinstall
c) restore his data
If he does not agree to this, tell him in a charming and brotherly manner that he can go fix his own fuckin computer

>having babby arguments about Linux vs Windows
>not just using Linux for servers and Windows for desktops like any normal sensible person

reformat the harddrive sage for gay questions

>windows
look faggot, depending on how windows has been configured it should have snapshots of itself that are multiple gigabytes in size each. delete some of the oldest ones.
this is your only choice unless you can find things to delete or back up somewhere else. learn about redundancy, faggot

And i already tried using ubuntu but it doesnt even feel right.

so my brother told me about smart defrag...
