Core and Quad in general

Why is so relevant to this day?

Aren't they the last intel cpu than you can easily disable the ME botnet?

A Kaveri APU is cheaper, faster, less power hungry and has a proper iGPU
>inb4 no upgrade path
Oh great, tell me more about your unreleased socket 775 Coffee Lake

They're not. Like 1/8th the IPC of current Core models at the same clock speed.

I got a dell laptop for free from work, it had a T7250 CPU. I upgraded it to a T7800, put Arch on it, and it runs as fast as a brand new windows PC.

I fucking love Arch. Its the only distro that allowes me to have exactly what I want without also expecting me to compile every single fucking thing like gentoo.

>implying you compile a single damn thing on your own

It's just scripts that other, smarter people wrote. All you have to do is run a command like any other distro.

>TFW Q6600 isn't faster than my old Phenom 9600 I have still in the cellar

>TFW you realize the Q6600 eats the Phenom for lunch

i used an e8400 for ten years

only reason i bought a new computer is because cs:go became unbearably slow after a certain update

>intel consumers so btfo by AMD that they have to fool themselves into believing a ancient CPU that can't even run javascript properly or any modern video decoders is a option since their only other choices beside AMD is a overpriced CPU with multiple vulns and without a proper GPU.

>b-but muh integrated GPU is good enough

Sure thing lad ;)

Seriously fuck you bro why does Jow Forums always have to ruin a good tech circle jerk.

Shut up bitch maybe we all don't work google and have a big salary like your rich ass fuck face

Yeah but I don't need to spend hours compiling shit for some meme distro, unlike Arch

ThinkPad X61 with T8300, 2.4Ghz, compiles even heavy packages ez and with very stable temperatures, never going +65 C degrees

Daul core is shit at running games btw

Only on OC, but stock they are similar.
Also the cheapest Celeron today eats a Q6600 for lunch even OCd and probably consumes 20 % of it

my dual Clovertown Xeon box was only $5 up front and power is cheap, take your low quality walmart shitbox and shove it up your ass

>people with big salaries
>people who are genuinely concerned about power consumption on home computers
pick one

Hope you have a fan on those FB-DIMM's. They're liable to catch on fire, kek.

the cooling on these systems is pretty overkill so I don't think it'll have any problems

Are you so fucking deadbeat you can't spend $100 on a CPU/mobo combo?

Its OK to use them, I would never throw away something that still suffices. But only if you still have it. Their power draw is immense for the performance which is laughable nowadays. We talk about a 12 yo CPU. Its not suitable for anything beside office work and browsing. Even converting a movie will be hell, I remember when I converted a Bluray on a T8100, it took 12 hours and the PC was sluggish as a 300 MHz Duron (if you know that feel).

>TFW vs 80 € 2018 CPU

It cant even beat a 2012 Core i3 dualcore
let alone C2Ds which would be half of a 6600s performance

>still suffices
Oh give me a break. $100 and you stop lowering your standards for the next 10 years.

IT'S NOT FAIR 2200G IS 130 EUROS IN MY COUNTRY

It can't even beat the very first gen i3s

Bad meme. Debian is not a noob distro. Also Arch's main selling point is rolling release. Only distros with ports (Gentoo, BSD) compete in up-to-dateness.

Don't mind me compiling gcc.

Because. Lazy game devs.

>power is cheap
you can't afford a proper computer and you want me to believe you can afford power? toppest fucking kek

I've got a mothballed system from 2007 with a Q6600 and a pair of those fancy 10K RPM Raptor drives, boot it up every once in a while to see if it's still working. It's even still has a 8800GTS running.

Me working on the purge at work.

What is a good price for:
Core2Duo, 2GB DDR2, 80GB HD, DVDROM?
Core2Quad, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HD, DVDROM?

Looking to sell on CL soon.

fuck me I should post my pic derp

Wrong

Attached: arch is not minimalist.png (1169x3679, 513K)

fuck off nigger

nobody needs more than 1 core

Wouldn't pay more than a few bucks for any of those. I think a local store sells machines like that for way below 100€, and that's with a warranty they provide.

>Wouldn't pay more than a few bucks for any of those
That's what I was thinking.
$20 for the duos
$35 for the quads.
It's better than leaving them out for the building to recycle. It's lunch money

Back in 2008 I built my first gaming PC, which also had the venerable E8400 paired with a Radeon HD 3870. Great system at the time, and the CPU almost outlived my interest in gaming. With some slight overclocking, it didn't even bottleneck the R7 270 I upgraded to in 2013. By 2016, though, it was really beginning to get bogged down in the newest games, and I unfortunately ended up dropping over $900 on a new system that I only seriously used for about a year. I gave the C2D to my little cousin and she still uses it to watch videos, browse the web and play Fortnite and Minecraft, which is sort of incredible, because in 2008 it was inconceivable that a 10-year-old CPU and a 5-year-old GPU would be able to do anything useful at all.

If you really have no need for a newer processor, then it's a waste of time and money upgrading to something newer, and it's bad for the environment. Especially since you will most likely have to chuck the motherboard with Intel's ever-changing socket cycle.

So a low-end processor that came out 10 years later is less than twice as fast. As long as you weren't one of the idiots who paid $800+ for the C2Q in its first few months of availability, I'd say you got pretty good value out of that.

/thread

all the benchmarks in this thread are related to the q6600 being at stock 2.4ghz but they all overclock to 5+ghz so its unfair

???

>they all overclock to 5+ghz
when will summer end

Just for reference, even with USA's low energy price (lowest in the developed world?) 100W for 12 hours a day is a lot of money over a year:
0.12/1000*100*12*365=35.04[$]
Cheapest CPU overtime is not the one that was cheapest outright. Not that those few bucks matter for most people, but as a rule of thumb you could buy something a bit better than bottom of the barrel and most likely save some money in the long run.

Some countries have subsidised or very efficient power distribution systems while simultaneously keeping high import fees

>5+ ghz
does your regular pc have a constant stream of liquid nitrogen pouring onto it?

>A Kaveri APU is cheaper, faster, less power hungry and has a proper iGPU

Is it really faster? Even in single thread performance?

isac my man, glad to see you around

I've been using Q6600 for many years. You could even play some 2015 games using some decent gpu...

DDR2 is too expensive and the sticks are small sizes. So with a 4 slot board you're looking at 8gb of ram max.

Windows and Browsers got too bloated to use them.

Had an E5200 at 4.8ghz then a Q8400 at 4.2ghz. Both were nice but eventually started having above issues and hardware started failing.

Bought a nice 1151 mobo and an i3 6100, hoping to upgrade later. Got cucked by them making the newest chips non compatible on the same socket.

Now not sure what to do. Just wait and buy a 6/7600k or a 6/7700k new before they're all gone or a try to get a used one.

why you idiots always making bad decisions?

Phenom ii x4 810 clocked at 2.6ghz matches the core 2 quad q6600, amd lost some ipc when they released bulldozer compared to the phenom iis but i imagine they gained it back when they released piledriver, steamroller cores are about 30% faster than first gen bulldozer so it's probably faster than the core 2 architecture but about 10-20% and clocked much higher

just upgraded from a trusty 12 years old e6750 to a slightly less old i7 860

unsure of how to feel

Who gives a rat's ass?

At its stable highest OC, the best core2 is worse than a cheap ass pentium.

Nothing wrong with an i3
>$100 CPU vs $500 CPU

Because literally my grandma.

>old cpu isn't faster than cpus that came out years after it
Truly amazing discovery.

I just don't understand what the expectations of the average Jow Forums poster in these threads are anymore, are they all running cluttered-ass browsers with hundreds of tabs and only go to YouTube, Amazon and other javascript-filled megacorporation sites? Do they throw a tantrum when anything loads in more than half a second? The only thing I notice my Nehalem chip really faltering at nowadays is the occasional game and I just really don't give a shit enough to get this upset about it.

Even when things are a little slow... who cares? The only suitable replacement I'd consider for my system is something new of similar market placement/build quality, and I'm not going to get that out of some shitty Celeron.
