Post underated, lesser known, or rare types of software along with their basic discriptions. Extra points for programs like Jack the ripper and Wireshark. I'll start.
Handbrake: a video encoder program that allows you to change video format, optimize video size, and change video quality. It's very useful for optimizing videos for YouTube and I believe it's open source.

Handbrake is good if you do not want a hassle nor being burdened with technical stuff. So you just encode shit and be done with it.
MEGUI another derivative, is good if you need more control over your encodes while retaining a somewhat sensible UI layered on top of its technicalities.
Anyway, the proper way to do it is to use batch scripts.

Houdini is a 3D modeling program that uses snippets of the VEX language to create very complex 3D models and renderings automatically. The VEX language is significantly faster than MEL and python scripting in Maya. It is designed for special effects in hollywood but can be used for everything from automated animations to placing assets in videogames based on parameters. Closed source but supported on Linux.
>you don't need to be dependent on the """botnet""" to do simple backups I don't think rsync is botnet.

>batch scripts much different from avisynth scripts? can you use something like qtgmc with 'batch' scripts?

AVS script is a totally different thing. Batch script is a windows thing (now known as Powershell) to run executables and other OS specific tasks. Just imagine the commands you type into commandline is instead typed and saved into a text file. You click the file and it will run the commands stored inside it.

I honestly can't think of a good reason to use Handbrake. If you want to have full control: Use ffmpeg. If you want to rip DVDs/Blu-rays: Use MakeMkv. If you want a GUI for simple edits: Use Avidemux.

>When your computer is getting full, BleachBit quickly frees disk space. When your information is only your business, BleachBit guards your privacy. With BleachBit you can free cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, shred temporary files, delete logs, and discard junk you didn't know was there. Designed for Linux and Windows systems, it wipes clean thousands of applications including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, and more. Beyond simply deleting files, BleachBit includes advanced features such as shredding files to prevent recovery, wiping free disk space to hide traces of files deleted by other applications, and vacuuming Firefox to make it faster. Better than free, BleachBit is open source.
It boils my blood knowing I'd waste days away with all sorts of proprietary cuckware cleaning services on Mac, Windows, and Linux during my highschool years when the most comprehensive and powerful program, BleachBit, existed the whole time. Seriously, I didn't think it was possible for cleaning programs to be remotely decent until discovering this beauty
Handbrake is meant for ripping DVDs and Blu-ray. You're better off using FFmpeg for all of that other stuff.

>If you want to rip DVDs/Blu-rays: Use MakeMkv. MakeMKV isn't free. They only thing it's good for is ripping obfuscated Blu-Rays. I can't think of any other reason why you would want to use it.
