I've tried both 1080p and 1440p on different days and using battery tracking apps as well as the anecdote of my real world perception there is virtually no difference at all.
My phone ended the day within the same percentage margins.

Now the amount of pixels lit stays the same since it's just rendering everything at 1080p, but still using natively 1080p phones there really isn't much of a difference.

The real difference comes from 1440p phones generally being flagships, and flagships don't give a fuck about battery life.
The S9 will run through juice like mad just sitting locked in your pocket.

When your native 1080p phone gives you great battery life it's not because it's only 1080p, it's because they're actually trying to give you a real value instead of inflating their benchmark numbers to impress mainstream idiots.

How is this relevant? I'm talking about a 1080p display vs 1440p display. If you were testing battery life like you just said then your test is worthless and flawed.
If you were to replace that SCREEN with a 1080p one you'd get a 20%-50% better battery life.

The 600 series of Snapdragon SoCs offer significant power, with some of the lowest heat output values. The 2 GBs of RAM on the S5 don't help much either.

I'm using it right now. It used to stutter until the 6.0 update. After this it ran fine but sometimes lagged because of galaxy bloat and google bloat. I moved to LineageOS without gapps. I literally haven't had any stuttering issues since.
