It's 18:9 because 16:9 is the current standard aspect ratio for displays and with 18:9 it is easier to visualise the difference to it than if it was 2:1. Same reason we have 21:9 and 16:10, not 7:3 and 8:5.

4:3 is 4:3 because it predates 16:9 by about half a century. If 4:3 aspect ratio displays were invented now they'd be called 12:9.

It is because marketers know normies like bigger numbers. The reason 16:9 exists is because manufacturers realized that a x inch 16:9 screen has less screen than a x inch 4:3. The further you deviate from 1:1 the less surface area a x inch screen has. 2:1 is further off than 16:9 and phone cucks are eating it up.

Plus most content fit for phones is vertical and if you really want to complain about black bars on videos, that space was mostly taken up by the thicker bezels before, whose reduction is also contributing to the shift towards 18:9.
