Is it inevitable that user-generated content websites get filled with crap as they grow popular?

Is it inevitable that user-generated content websites get filled with crap as they grow popular?

Are there measures that site runners can take to maintain older sub-populations or will normies always displace the original user base?

>Is it inevitable that user-generated content websites get filled with crap as they grow popular?
hehe... look where you are kid.... you better believe in nightmares kid!... cause you're in one!!

>Top 10 xyz you wont believe!
How does this shit get millions of views?

Any increase in user population will cause a regression to the mean.

user, it is not that normies have arrived. They have always been here, since the beginning we were all normies. No no the truly terrifying thought is that everyone everywhere in the entire world is getting worse- there are no good people left.

You don't have to watch that. Trending pages aren't the entirety of YouTube.

as people start to see it as just another place to promote their products you will see more low effort entries.

>implying the right side is not crap
>implying old YTers were not normies
Fuck off, faggot. There's much more good content than ever. You just have to find it.

Attached: youtube-hours-minute-uploaded.png (1494x868, 29K)

Also what's up with the dozens of fake accounts uploading fake videos with millions of fake tags on them? Every time I look for a sports stream, every day, a shitload of new fake accounts have new videos up. How come nothing's stopping these?

>Only watch a few metalwork and tech channels
>Youtube custom recommendations filled with top 10s, anti trump videos and mtf tranny videos

Youtube certainly isn't helping to find the good content.

Hmmm... just from that image I have a few ideas.
>no videos under 10 minutes
>no user modifiable thumbnails
>no all caps channel names
>no faggot shit

It started going to crap when Google bought YouTube and started this partner program that allowed some channels to make money. I remember how some decent channels which took their time to release one good video every two weeks started to shit out two mediocre videos every week for the YouTube money. Eventually they allowed everyone to make money with their videos and it got even worse.

Recommendations are indeed clickbait crap but they probably work with brainlets which constitute 90% of all viewers.
Just go to the channels you like and look at which related channels they have linked. That way you can find most channels of interest.

Typical YouTuber:

1. Let's make a small channel where I talk about tech
2. Shit, making money is sweet
3. I just realized making good videos won't get me rich, I can make more money throughout all the year if I just shit on Apple.

EEVBLog is probably the only channel that's been around since the pre-google days and hasn't sold out to anyone

>Use youtube playlists for music
>Only okay-ish recommendations

Geez, internet back then was much better than now... No fake news, no dumb people, Jow Forums was full of OC, no phoneposters and dumb drumpf alt-retard supporters... Gosh, I wish I could turn time back to 2009, even if just for a day... Golden time of human civilisation...

Strict moderation of topics and comments (w/messages telling them what they did wrong) is the only way but most get butthurt about having their posts deleted.

The point is that it becomes exponentially harder to find quality content because it is overflowing with clickbait bullshit and onions that normies follow religiously

do you unironically think that old youtube was better?
it's all the same shit
>dumb shit
>music
>edutainment
>conspiracies
>some fucking youtube event abomination
get fucked op

Wow Jow Forums replaces the s\o\y word. The absolute state of it.

That content mainly appears in recommendations, not on trending pages.

>Is it inevitable that user-generated content websites get filled with crap as they grow popular?

no. the problem is monetisation.

the more popular a community becomes the more difficult it becomes for the owner to say no to corporate sponsorships. and once you start doing it for the money, that's all it becomes about. some channels like clearly don't make a living out of ads and will carry on doing their thing.

also, as other anons pointed out, if you're looking for a video to watch on the front page of youtube without already knowing what you want to watch, it means you're going to get given shit youtube wants you to watch, which just so happens to be the stuff that makes them the most money.

>it becomes exponentially harder to find quality content because it is overflowing with clickbait
that's because you're not looking for something relevant to your needs, you're looking for entertainment. not sure why you're surprised that you get given clickbait.

because plebs only know how to make pleb content.

like this post.

Google doesn't care as long as advertisers don't complain.

back in the day videos could only be 10 minutes long unless you had a partner account.

this guy gets it

I use my history page as my youtube bookmark and hardly EVER go to the homepage and I avoid basically all of this. Then I hit up my subscription tab and see if it updated or search for something. Hell I still don't get the whole bit about everyone wanting me to click the reminder bell when all my subscriptions update themselves I don't need notifications nor have I ever been unsubscribed from anyone without my permission. For awhile they did fuck a bit with the subscription feed where I wasn't receiving shit in the list that were uploaded.

You have it backwards. Access to random crap entertainment is what makes platforms popular. Viral videos of epic fails or people acting like lunatics are the first greatest hits of YouTube. Cat videos are a solid and safe second.
Excessively sanitizing platforms makes them boring. People will go to the next rad platform where they will get their retarded entertainment from.

Population density is increasing so...
>no videos under 10 minutes
No, it should be:
>capability to show no videos under X minutes on your feed/subs page

>Using a polynomial series to regresse a exponential trend
Protip: you can log(y) and than fit with a linear equation

Well, look at /b/, it's all pictures of dicks and poop these days.

Use stylish and dispay: none; that shit

onions

That's been a thing for months. Go back retard

>All this naivete
What delusional fart-huffing fairy tale land are you living in? Are you mentally challenged or are you such a autofellating leftist that you would actively lie about what happened 10 years ago? None of that shit happened and you know it. The Internet has pretty much always been this way since the late 90s early 2000s, it's just gotten worse because of the modern outrage culture prevalent within it and society at large (as best demonstrated by the autistic "soccer mom-type" retards on today's modern political left (also called progtards), when the evangelocucks on the right were the former bearers of the title ironically). You're either being retarded or pretending to do so for upvotes on where you belong: . Or this may just be bait, in which case (You) got me.

Attached: hella bait.jpg (625x626, 85K)

In 10 years all internet content will be presented in some form of "top ten best..." format. Some different kinds of content might still be made but it will be invisible behind search algorithm promotion of top ten best lists

no, like everything 80% of it was shit then and 80% is shit now.

I think what's written here also applies to yt etc meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths

Removing people like Alex Jones helps.

youre forgetting centralization.

a decade ago, there were fewer people but many more active websites, censorship was a non issue because most people with something to say self hosted (with no penalty in terms of loss of an audience)
the explosion of internet "growth"/since then has been like a big bang, where the largest websites like black holes swallowed up all the competion and audience, subjecting anyone outside major network platforms to complete ireelevancy, meaning that in order to retain any profitability, any site in the margins resorts to clickbait, malware and the like, much like deep sea fish adaapted to the resource starved abyss by opportunistic scavenging and parasitism.
ironically even though we nominaly have more websites to choose from, the greatest number are lean and malicious from the deprivation, driving people furrther into the clutches of media giants

there is a reason so many internet companoes were started in the 90s and early 2000s and that reason is that it would be outright impossible for them to survive today.

no new chan has survived, no new wiki can replace the entrenched, dominant one, nothing can replace google, etc. because they are literally too big to fail, and they freely crack down on privacy and free speech because of it.

sadly, this

Jow Forums used to be about saying nigger ironically and mocking people who were actual racists coz of how dumb they seemed. now it's attracted enough racists to overturn the status quo.
go back to where YOU belong:hicktown usa in some dying coal mining job hoping that kicking immigrants out will mean some more relevancy for

Users are content.
No amount of free speech or features will outweigh the amount of responses and content produced.
For new chan to exist the current one needs to die for at least a month.

I literally don't see a change in quality. Videos used to be shit, they just didn't have as click baity titles and thumbnails. Obviously there is more shit now than before when everything is more accessible, but the large majority of videos used to be shit in 2009 as well.

Do you not know how to subscribe on NewPipe/SkyTube or desktop?

It was actually a place for people to speak what you can't say in (actually) moderated forums, not just being ironic you idiot.
The only reason you think that amount of racism has grown, is because now the left has the whip so more dispossessed internet users are from "the right", so they flow here as you try to process why your corporate endorsed social norms are not "cool" anymore.

I remember when I was a kid masturbating to "sexy teen dance" videos on YouTube before discovering porn sites.
Now typing this would put me on the government watch list.
What went wrong?

The proportion of shit to gold actually improves as you gain popularity, as you attract businesses and talented individuals. But as it's possible to find a gold nugget in a ton of shit, finding one in a mountain of it - not so much. So you get a false impression that content quality deteriorated.

you growing up into a 40 year old neet

Eh I use Google play music, their auto playlists are fucking amazing.

Are you butthurt that Rossman makes money shitting on Apple and you don't? Also he owns a business that makes him way more money than YouTube.

>2009
Haha what the fuck, I thought you spoke of 2004. I mean I get it people have rose tinted glasses about the earliest chan years, since there aren't chan oldfags older than chans to slap their shit, but this is just ridiculous. Nice joke faggot.

What are you talking about? 2009 was already 3 years into the normalfag aeon, with big bang and smart phones and shit.

>chan

Youtube playlists are good, the recommended videos on the other hand are just okay.

Yes, which is why youtube desperately needs a way for you to block channels you don't like. There's a browser extension that allegedly does this but I'm not sure if it's working because there's so much garbage.

Of course they won't do that because that would involve them relinquishing some power over you and they're too evil to do that.

youtube had a shitton of funny clips for normie back then as well. I like it a lot more now since anyone can upload a 30 minute short-docu about their job/hobby. Of course, they aren't many compared to the funny clips, but nobody's forcing me to watch those

lol was gonna say same, there are afaik no other youtubers that really can be said to "get paid for shitting on apple" besides louis, and fyi he does not really make shit. his videos are demonetized because swears.

god they're such an annoying twat. I think they are officially diagnosed with autism or adhd, taking 30min to get to the point and stuttering.

underage detected

bait or more likely
UNDERAGE DETECTED

You can always put in qualification requirements to post content to a site. For example, if you want to make a scientific forum, limit it to students/graduates/professors/etc.

If you want to make an anime specific forum, you can limit posters by asking sets of random questions (ala university exam) about anime. The questions could change every few months or year so answers don't get leaked out.

I don't know if this counts as spam but I am working on a web extension to try and reduce clickbait from YouTube by keeping an index of important timemarks. I'll post the github if you guys want it, it's FOSS.
Mods please delete this post if it is against the rules

there are Firefox extensions that hide entire channels of public search. i blocked 400 craps channels

Monetization is the key.
Look at YouTube, it mainly started going to shit once monetization became full time income for people so they tried to make their content reach the widest market possible. Without that people would just so it for fun and content would be more genuine. It has nothing to do with user creativity, it's just the corporatization of everything.

This is bait, right?

You have to go back

being this much of a liberal brainlet

>Is it inevitable that user-generated content websites get filled with crap as they grow popular?

Remember Jow Forums before of 2018? PC builds, genuine discussion about tech. Now every thread is "botnet" "latest viral meme" "youtube is shit",etc

Old YT was the same low quality turd but in 240p

Why are there so many "le wrong generation" faggots on Jow Forums lately? There is more niche content available now on the internet than ever before if you know how to find it. If you complain about being unable to find quality, you have only yourself to blame for skimming the surface and not putting in the effort.

Ironically, nostalgiaing for the past when you had less acess to information is one of the most normalfag things you can do. Congratulations.

>pc build threads (aka mindless consumerism) are genuine discussion about tech
Is this bait?

This isn't even related to that at all, saying website went to shit =/= le I wish I was in the 50s

It is though, all the normies I know love to reminesce about the same kind of garbage. "Life was so much better before the internet and smartphones got popular"

The underage angsty /v/ermin on this board seem to be under the impression that these thoughts make them special when it's the most normal and mundane thing imaginable.

Nigger did you not read my post? YouTube is unrelated to that, this is about quality of content on YouTube which has gotten worse

I like being able to choose from different possible thumbnails from the video, but setting unrelated stuff can be annoying.

Like I said, there's more niche content available even on youtube than ever before.

If you're complaining about the quality of youtube declining, what you mean is the decline in quality of the most popular, visible side of youtube. You only pay attention to the most visible hings and that's your only frame of reference.

Face it, you were a normie back then, it's just that the internet has outgrown you and you were younger and more impressionable. It wasn't that great.

clickbait is just efficient
the majority of the content was always stuff you wouldn't want to watch, it was just dumb or boring instead
wasn't one of the very first videos on YouTube some Asian guys acting out a Backstreet Boys song?
would you watch that? if so, would you watch it more than just once for the novelty of it?
how many videos back in the day were Unregistered Hypercam tutorials featuring Notepad on how to do some dumb thing that you can't do anymore and was likely there to push some website in the first place?

>no videos under 10 minutes
are you kidding? the worst videos are the ones that have an intro, take 3-5 minutes to get to the point, take 5-7 minutes to actually explain the point, and then "lichen subscribe get it on bang a gong" and an outro, lots of those are around 10 minutes

>rule #8: chicks dig dildos

I think it moves those subscriptions to the top of the list and gives you phone notifications

What's popular on Youtube is by large what Google wants you to see, they rig the trending feed, what videos are recommended to you etc.

No, the entire site has shifted its content and its been that way for a long time. Most if the site is garbage which translates to a larger percentage than before.

how to fix the internet:
ban sponsored content and targeted ads
ban anyone under the age of 21

Attached: .png (377x326, 8K)

Youtube has been dead since years, in fact they don't even give a shit about the content control anymore, just look pic related, the absolute state of youtube

Attached: youtubeisded.png (536x317, 153K)

This, and force companies to publish the algorithms behind their feeds, search results and recommendations.

>saying nigger ironically
nope, that was just you

This, but force companies to publish all of their source code

Attached: furi sofuto.jpg (450x338, 63K)

This, and force companies to publish their list of investors.

GAAAWWWPPP

notOP but most of what I see is shit I've already seen....
Isn't it kind of stupid to recommend me something I've already watched?

youtube used to have a feature where you could set a minimum or maximum video length

Other than multiple UI changes and advertisers jumping ship, there's no difference between the landscape of YT in 2009 vs 2018.
It had normie shit back then and it has normie shit now.

There's normie then there's being consumer cancer which is the big difference.

"good content" is completely useless if it isnt discoverable, retard
this is why nu-Jow Forums is shit, signal to noise ratio is too low, so people with something to say increasingly leave because their comments get lost in a sea of shit, no matter how big the audience or how active the thread is
>life was better
pathetic strawman, the INTERNET was better because smart, educated people were online and created quality content for other educated people
now its sub 80 iqs shit smearing other sub 80 iqs

You're giving math-advice to a dude that substitues "better" for "much more good".

Just sayin.

ESL: "good" modifies "content"
and "much more" modifies "than ever"
t. non-retard

Why force them to show stuff instead of enforcing user control over any bullshit ?
