Even at its prime Debian's ppc support was lacking compared to Gentoo, now in 2018, it's not even a contest as Debian has dropped the support years ago. Gentoo is the best OS for these older PowerPC macs, even better than OS X/9 (unless you want to run older mac applications) since you can actually use new software on it

It's slow as shit, slower even than Core 2 Duo. OP probably has a mechanical HDD as well.

Actually I'd say Debian is the best. I use Debian Sid on my iBook G4 and it works great. Debian Sid was never dropped, and now they've moved all powerpc + ppc64 stuff to "Debian Ports", which just means they build it on different machines and it doesn't have official support.

If you don't know what to do with it, sell it to somebody who does.

Last time I used Debian on a PowerMac G5 the machine sounded like it was going to take off, did they fix that?

I dunno never used a G5 machine. On my iBook though, the fans function well and switch off / speed up and down whenever they need to. Seems to work better than OS X since OS X likes to push it as far as it can go while remaining silent before it eventually decides to turn the fan on.

Debian still has PPC repos. Debian has excellent support for G5.
