Most people don't care that it's spyware that's the problem.

Because convenience always outweighs security or any other concern for most users.

So mods and jannies are not concerned about security anymore? Would they like to be spied upon?

All my friends are using it and we've ditched our Mumble server so there's not much we can do.
If Mumble was free we'd go back in a heartbeat.

I'm attempting to get rid of Discord entirely but I'm finding it impossible. I'm willing to use anything else but people just don't want to give it up.

They moderate an American imageboard dedicated to porn, anime, and politics without any monetary compensation. Their concerns aren't that high by default, user.

>Discord has confirmed in an email correspondence that it does receive government requests for information. So, we know that the government potentially has access to all of the information that Discord collects about you.

Seriously is everything just trying to be as bad as Google these days?

They get pretty freaking mad when their chat logs leak though. I'd imagine they now receive janny logins credentials through private Discord messages as well. Someone on Discord staff could observe that and use it to clean up posts on Jow Forums.

Actually not just Discord staff, but any of their partners who have unfettered access to everyone's chatlogs.

>not using ripcord
baka

Most discord users could see someone sitting watching their discord chats and still think 'meh, what ever'

It's a good place to easily meet degenerates wearing programming socks

What? I remember it used to be through IRC what the hell happened to the staff? are they to brainlet to use IRC?

>give janitors their own private board
>make them use an external means of communication to maintain regular contact

They changed every other platform plus IRC to Discord.

if you want to live in this society, you joined a spyware botnet on the date your became a birth record

But Mumble is free?

dedicated servers are not

Mumble is free, but user means paying for a server. Don't know where they'd be buying it from though, and it depends on how many slots they need.

Or you simply install the server software somewhere and don't care about "slots." That's invented by the commercial parties.

Somehow a lot of normies heard about it, so it's become the default instant messenger for people who haven't used one before. It also pulls in weak-willed people who just use whatever their friends use.

You can just host a server from literally any computer... I host a mumble server on a computer in my basement. It's no more complicated than hosting a dedicated server for a game.

Mumble is free of charge and open source, and so is the murmur server software
You can host a server on a raspberry Pi free of charge
You can join one of the hundreds of free and empty public servers that are literally listed in the server picker

>why are people using Discord
because it's good

I'd like kindly to remind you by how many infants, manchildren, baby boomers and actual teenagers we have on this board dwelling, which still live in their parents house.

and if you're not using any electronics, they will pull the plug because it's consuming their electricity in standby mode.. making it irresponsible for you to host a reliable steady server.

What's good about it?

convenient

simple, good looking ui
easy to use
you don't need your own server
doesn't lag like skype
it just works

same features like skype with video embed and more structurised working formular that's been known in teamspeak for years + very convenient game UI for gamers

Anything else?

Convenience. No one is too concerned about Discord admins/NSA/GCHQ listening to your World of Warcraft raid wiping. Don't use it to discuss anything se nsitive and it's okay.

Cucks love the 'cord

>Don't use it to discuss anything se nsitive and it's okay.
this, is not like they're collecting any other data like uuid or stuff like that lol lmao like whatever

>making it irresponsible for you to host a reliable steady server.
You can connect batteries to a rPi which would last for a while. If you can charge your phone then you can charge the rPi or a laptop. And no parent is insane enough to kill a router just for electricity.
Also, it doesn't have to have 100% uptime. We're talking about communication with friends here, while playing games. Not something you use facebook for already.

So is mumble. It's even more convenient because I don't have to make an account and it has a significantly lower resource use and install size.

>you don't need your own server
Mumble, riot.im, Facebook messenger, wire, ring. Neither requires you to host a server.
>good looking ui
Subjective

>Don't use it to discuss anything se nsitive and it's okay.
You do realize they also collect keystrokes, your running software and connected hardware? That is, if you're dumb enough to install the app.

Easy to use, easy to get people on, good UI, good text chat features.

If they got rid of the whole deleting accounts for dumb shit thing and allowed self hosting it'd be gold

>You do realize they also collect keystrokes
any sources on this one?

so many discord shills in this thread
its funny how spying is only a problem within the Jow Forums community if we're talking about operating systems

I already use Windows 10. Using Discord won't hurt any more. Since Windows 10 is essential for gaming might aswell use Discord too.
The solution to the privacy thing is to have 2 computers: a gaming PC and a Jow Forumsentooman thinkpad

>Since Windows 10 is essential for gaming
Wrong.
