Wine requires a bit more configuration to get many windows games working. I'm assuming the valve project would make it as easy as installing steam to get it working which would be convenient for many users, especially casual Linux users.

The point of this is that it installs Wine by itself, they aren't doing their own tools.
I have no idea how Valve will make it work with the thousands of games on Steam without manually checking each one of them which Valve obviously won't do, it will probably be community shit that doesn't work 90% of the time.

Comparatively, yeah, but there are definitely some solid games out there. Xonotic, Minetest, Terasology, StepMania, Nethack. I don't want to list any that I haven't at least played or watched a video about. I went through the whole Free Software Directory "gameplaying" section the other day. A few things in the wrong category (video players and such), and a few dead links, but some real gems were in there. Lots of crap as well. Hopefully the situation can improve by the time I have kids. It would be cool if they could play some games growing up without having to use non-free software.

there was a huge clash between game devs and microsoft for introducing new drms and ways for MS to manipulate what runs and what doesn't on windows 8 and 10,
iirc they tried to have every executable signed by them in order to run... and ofc with the appropriate fee.
Valve then started creating the dx2opengl library, where every rendering dx call from source would be run via that library under linux.
then the macshit with Metal came along and they got locked out of apple too.
Now their only way of providing gamers with games and avoid being MS or apple's bitches is to run everything on loonix.
I'd rather see them start supporting reactos, because linux has wine and it is in a great state.

They've been pushing for it, but did a whole lot of nothing to help get it where it currently is. AMD has done more for the Linux community. After their Steam-box failed it was complete radio silence from them.
SUDDENLY when Linux gaming starts to see more progress, Valve swoops in save the day.

They are fucking slow. The problem was always that windows games required to run windows steam so you needed to have both to play both native and wine games. There was even a tool that transparently fed windows steam api to wine-compatible games (you still needed windows client to download packages or download them manually) but valve has been breaking compatibility every update and developer has given up.
The only problem is that steam doesn't allow downloading windows packages from linux client. If they lift that limitation off wine would be able to run them.

There is many more popular open source games like SS13 or clones like OpenSpades. These are actually really good.

Linux has wine but you can't run wine games under Linux steam client. It's nice they will allow that and add some easy configuration.
