I don't think it's intentional, I think it is a product of the "fake it till you make it" mentality. Something I think is inherently a bad idea. The "act as if" phrase of the same origin has a much better meaning in my opinion and doesn't necessarily promote this behavior.
These people pretend that it's easy and that they mastered it all and you can too because it's the world they want to live in, they're trying to be the change they wish for. But in actuality, it doesn't work that way and can be bad if things go even slightly askew for those kinds of people.
I've gotten pretty good at identifying and avoiding this personality trait because they all seem to just want to blow smoke and waste time trying to be excited about nothing.

I'm a PhD candidate too, not at Harvard though, but my uni is ranked 3rd nationally and I'm not from a third world country, and my daily life is average as fuck. A typical day is nothing to brag about. But of course if I were to make a video for (you)s, I'd be sure to make it looks like everyday is open campus day. I'd turn on all the machines, compile all the programs, include screencaps of my proudest subroutines I wrote and pretend I do this everyday.

I go to an elite Ivy A lot of these kids do go to these companies for a quick buck, but some (the few really special people who makes these schools so special) go because they want to get the industry experience and connections before doing a startup. Many people are really not capable of starting a successful startup, especially out of college at 22 years old. But, I do agree that many people do waste this incredible opportunity but many shouldn't and wouldn't be here in the first place by their academic merits alone.
He's not that amazingly bright. He's definitely not what you think an Ivy genius is. He's a student athlete and runs Cross Country/Track that's what his workout is (NCAA rules prevent this because monetizing).
Student-athletes are really never the brightest here at Ivy. They have pretty lower academic standards for admission.
