I've checked the differences in many aircrafts sold by the US, the differences are mainly on the radars.
for example there are many countries who don't get f35s and they are doing upgrayedds on the f16s they have.
What they get is better radars and computing units(for the better tracking system).

Civilian contractor here, I work on the Lightning's avionics systems. The F-35 is a extremely advanced and capable plane, but suffers from various issues, namely:
>Extremely high maintenance costs, mainly due to the complexity of the involved systems and lack of spare parts
>Constantly "in-development", shit is always changing
>Tries to fulfill too many goals at once, leaving it lacking in many areas
I would go into detail, but that would violate my NDA. However, having seen the internals of both the Saab Gripen and Dassault Rafale, it is a safe bet that an F-35 would be downed by these planes.
