Unix, Linux, everything as much as can be is text file or directory. Socket, tty, device, whatever. So if something has .old, .bak, .fuck, ui doesn't need to tell me it doesn't recognize and to fuck away, it should ASK what to do, maybe i want to open with emacs or vim or gimp or anything else

Cinnamon is pretty much perfect in my opinion. I never have any glitches like in KDE but it's not locked down to one specific look like GNOME. It's still modern and has enough features and good default shortcut keys. Maybe you are able to alter the look in GNOME somehow but I bet it requires editing config files. There's never any GUI options for anything, they strip them all off. GNOME 2 was more comfy than GNOME 3.
