Dd if=iso of=disk

>dd if=iso of=disk
>cursor blinks but there is otherwise no output for hours on end
>no indication of success or failure
>no progress indicator whatsoever

yes it only bothers you if there is an error it is very poolite

that's cute.

Retard learn how to use dd

it's more or less the desigtn philosophy of the basic unix utils

>polluting stdout when it's mostly called by scripts
Why tho?

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null status=progress

+

Send SIGUSR1, it'll print its IO statistics. Right there in the man page.
And if it terminates without error, it's successful!

But yea, dd is an ancient tool, we generally don't make CLI like that anymore. Use ddrescue or whatever if you don't like dd.

it simply does what it's supposed to do and it's damn good at it. entertaining you in the meantime is not a part of its job.

linux definitely should write at the start of every command that retardness, which is leading to not reading man pages isn't a fault of command itself.

Just use ddrescue my dude.
> ddrescue -vv image.iso /dev/sdb
Gives a nice little readout.

hey thanks, all you have to do for this on osx is ctrl+t
pretty sweet

>What is
pv file.iso | dd of=/dev/disk

>Oh no, this decades old software with countless modern alternatives that I don't need to be using doesn't hold my hand for me.
4/10 bait, got me to reply
Sage

linux sucks,
checked

>status=progress
please neck yourself.

turn on the verbose flag with -v, then it will tell you about stuff.

No problem.

Good to know I didn't learn Gentoo for nothing.

Learn to use man. Or install pv and READ THE FUCKING MANUAL

Given the responses ITT it's safe to say that YOTLD will never come.

also status=progress for live indicator, or pv

you can have a progress bar you fucking retard, git gud piece of shit

>Linbabbys can't click "next" and install system
what a bunch of retards LMAO dab on 'em lincucks xD

>dd doesn't have -v
why not, who wants to type status=progress

>implying it needs to
Fuck SystemD, Let's Keep Linux Normie-Free :^)

switch to bsd if having a sooper sekrit klub is important to you

Sorry, I like actually having decent hardware support.
It's not a "sooper sekrit klub", it simply isn't something that's compatible with your average moron that just wants to browse Facebook, yet everyone seems to want to make it so because representation is important for some inexplicable reason? It's fine the way it is, I just wish people would stop trying to force mass adoption of terrible standardizations (like systemd) that fly in the face of the modularity and 'muh freedoms' that Linux is supposed to be all about.

Also, if you really want a "Year of the Linux Desktop", the only way that's ever going to happen is if we start advocating for manufacturers to start selling more systems with it preinstalled...
