Is this symptomatic of hardware failure or some miscellaneous windows issue? All I have yet to try is a fresh install of windows or buying a network card.

so long as you have a legit key then you're entitled to download a digital copy however you want. and ms only really cares about piracy if you're a corporate customer or a reseller
Try using another hard drive with another os installed then go back to the current one. If it works on the other one, do a fresh install. If it doesn't, check if your internet works if the lan cable is plugged into another computer. If that succeeds, you've got something wrong with your mobo.
I would highly suggest you try hooking up your lan cable into something else first though.

I've considered that, but the encryption is only as viable as the webhost you choose. I distrust google/dropbox/mega but i distrust those random vps services even more.

I use i3. I was running a program in wine (Magic The Gathering Online) which has its own minimize/maximize buttons. I accidentally clicked the minimize button a few weeks ago, and the window has become permanently glitched: it appears to be tiling as normal yet it's blank and ignores all input. Apparently either wine or MTGO saves the state of its windows because I haven't been able to get it to function since.
Advice?

I am absolutely losing my shit over this fucking goddamn piece of trash setup that refuses to cooperate on something that was figured out fucking two decades ago and continues to get dragged down the shitter. Already broke the legs on my keyboard slamming it after this thing fucked up AGAIN.
So for backstory, I live in the second floor of a house. Its like an apartment scenario, but its just some dude out in the woods who happens to have a top layer of his house which is separate from the bottom, and I rent out that top layer. Everything is covered under rent (it's a fairly informal arrangement) and I use their electricity, heat, wifi so on so forth just as part of the package. That last bit is what's been driving me up a fucking wall these past two years or so and is only getting worse.
The wifi network is, obviously, not on my floor of the building, and of course works like fucking garbage. I can't even begin to explain the multiple phenomena that go on with the setup he's running; signal strength dropping from 65% to 12% and staying there for days then returning to typical strength, a repeater setup that's probably just some plug-and-play garbage that unnecessarily causes interference (seriously, I can access all FOUR SSIDs of his network as well as his printer from the farthest corner of my apartment, what the hell is he doing?), running garbage hardware without question (the default shitbox that cable companies give you thats 'technically' a router but functionally fermented cow shit molded into a brick), so on so forth. I can deal with it, whatever, who cares, as long as it works. But it doesn't. It absolutely fucking doesn't.
Half of my devices refuse to connect to the network whatsoever, and those that do all exhibit the same symptom - after a period of being connected (let's say 30m-1h), the client will suddenly and completely lose all internet connectivity despite a fine connection to the router, and it will not return at all.
did you, i don't know, consider talking to the guy and offering to optimize the network in exchange for paying for all the new equipment? literally a win-win

The ONLY WAY to get the client to reconnect to the router is to swap SSIDs. It's as tedious and frustrating as it sounds when you're in the middle of something and WHOOP there goes the fucking connection, now you have to swap from 5g to 2.4g or vice versa, and if you're using a device that isn't dual band you're just FUCKED. The device either will not connect to the network -ever again- or will require a complete reboot to do so. And not all devices are exactly easy to swap connections on. My computer (X230, stock Intel wifi card, Debian stable) exhibits just about exactly the same symptom - it'll be fine wirelessly, sometimes for 8 hours and sometimes for 30 minutes. And then it just stops. It's still connected to the router but there's NO connection to the internet. And then you'll think "oh, I'll just disconnect from the network and reconnect" and then you've really jumped down into shit creek, and the paddles three feet up your ass. At that point, the computer no longer connects to ANY of the four SSIDs that are available to it. None. It'll show all four, with good signal strength to boot, and upon attempting to connect to any of them, it'll simply attempt for a while, then give up with a message saying the wireless network could not be found. The only way to cure it at that point is to reset the goddamn thing; even flicking the physical wifi disable switch on the laptop will not fix the issue. And that's a tremendous pain in the ass considering the laptop doesn't play nice with the dock setup, meaning I have to disconnect it from everything, reset it and log in, and THEN reconnect and redock it.
So I thought "okay, wireless fucking blows, let's try something else" and set up a wireless router with DD-WRT running in client mode to provide a walled-garden network for my personal use up here and I could just run switches to other parts of the house and hardwire everything. Great idea, works about as well as every other device.
I'm not going to waltz into his front door, dick in hand, and shout "SORRY GUV, NETWORK'S BUGGERED, NEEDA RESET THAT THERE ROUTER SO I CAN GET MY HEEN-TAES PLAYIN'.". It's his network and he's perfectly happy with it, and I hate to intrude into his personal space. Plus if anything ever goes wrong from that point on, I'm on the line as the person of responsibility and have to fix it. Not a scenario I want to put myself in.

The client-mode router will have a solid connection for a whole 5 minutes, then mysteriously, the same exact thing happens - no connection to the outside world. TX looks fine, RX looks fine, signal quality, SNR, everything, all flawless, nothing out of the ordinary, and then a few minutes later the connection MIGHT return. And if it does it'll be good for either five minutes or hours. It's anybody's guess.
At this point I have no idea what kind of ancient juju shit is going on here and where the major hiccup is and I'm out of ideas. Does anybody have any clue what is causing all of this persistent weirdness? It's far beyond my capabilities at this point and nothing makes a lick of goddamn sense with it.
Why do I need to download some fucking bloatware that comes with "game setting optimization", and game info for every single game, and user interface for SHIELD and, a streaming service and in-game overlays and VR checks and system info and desktop notifications, and A FUCKING REGISTER AND LOGIN FORCE when I JUST WANT TO UPDATE MY GOD DAMN FUCKING SHITTING CUNT GRAPHICS DRIVER.

How do I fix insanely slow wifi speeds? Over the course of the last few weeks my wifi has slowed to a crawl. According to speed test sites my wifi specs are:
Ping: 35
Upload: 61 mbps
Download: 61 mbps
Yet when I try to torrent anything I can't even muster a mbps. My download speed for torrents seems to be capped at around 200-900 kbs. When I try to direct download anything, I get around 1-2 mbps. I can't even stream videos anymore outside of youtube and Netflix, my other site slows to a crawl and buffers to the point where videos are unwatchable.
If I move a wireless device a few inches from my modem then I can gain around 1mbps when torrenting which is still godawful.
If I go on the other side of my house(away from the modem) then my wireless devices struggle to even catch a signal
I'm not seeding anything, so It can't be a torrent leaching my wifi.
