Open source is a fucking meme, you're better off just writing commercial software and at least making some cash from your shit, unless you're someone like torvalds who is already established in the scene

Why would you write software if you arent being paid? Do you guys have autism?

>he got into software for money and not out of passion and enjoyment
>doesn't realize that like 95% of the wealthiest programmers are so because they got into it out of passion

shiggy diggy

Attached: just spiders.jpg (600x608, 89K)

Marketing is a thing. If nobody knows your software exists, it's not going to get used. If everyone knows it exists, people will keep downloading it even if it sucks and there are a dozen better programs.

What’s wrong with that, kind sir?

Sure, but how is some rando supposed to market their open source projects? Can't do it on faceberg cause normies, can't do it on 4chin cause dox, can't do it on ribbit cause too many elitist bug people

>0 stars, 0 forks, 0 pull requests
Why do you care about these?

You write software for free with the objective of impressing the people who will pay you to write software.

Because

This is your problem. How are people gonna star it if it's not known? You're in a sea of fizzbuzz and you're surprised nobody noticed you
Post it on reddit you queer

I forgot you guys dont program for a living and are college neets. 40 hours of writing software a week is enough for me

No, I'm not a college cunt, I finished my B.S. in CompE/EE a few years ago and now do embedded systems for a living. I still like programming in my free time, though

Oh right so you arent even a programmer. Makes sense lol

>systems programming/writing drivers/OS interactions isn't programming
>writing shitty CRUD legacy code for BIG BIZ INCORPORATED is REAL programming

kys faggot

wow it's not like the 90% of Jow Forums is under 25. Not that many graduated, professional developers around here.

Its not lol ever ee guy i ever met only knows c and sucks dick at it

god do I love this mans lifestyle.

Fucking newfag isnt even 25 yet lmao

He's a LARPer, best ignore his autism

What's wrong with writing shit for free? Especially while you're still in school

Same reason to do art if you aren't being paid.

>600 commits
Why didn't you just get it right the first time?

Oh okay nvm, you're a troll

>college neet
Logical contradiction. You cannot be someone who is "not in education, employment, or training" if you are currently being educated.

I hope those repos are on private computers as well. Otherwise, it's anything but private.
Open source wasn't always a meme.
In modern times like all things, it has become one. Remember peek hackathon? Essentially, it's free labor and exploitation. If someone truly values something, they'll put their money where their mouth is. Never give your shit away for free. Every jackass on earth has a github with useless code. No one even looks at your resume even after phone screens and coming onsight. No one gives a literal fuck about your open source/git hub repos. Marketing/HR claims they do because it keeps dumb plebs contributing to the corporate freegrab.

*ahem* I would like to inform you, sir, that you haven’t actually touched upon the topic discussed, it being that it is perfectly acceptable to write software for free. Need an example? Perfect, simply marvelous. You have to know, internet denezin, that there exist such things as “hobbies”, usually gratifying activities that do in fact require work and are done completely for free. Why should a car mechanic work on his own car for free? Well, he simply has so much passion in the craft that he likes to tune his automobile in his spare time. Having said that then, why is in your eyes so unacceptable to write software for personal use, maybe to fix something or to accelerate some tasks, for free?

Lol yeah man total larper. I definately didnt implement cardconnect from our payment microservice running in kuberneties in the new springboot app that sells product today, and error handle it for failed auth and captures, voiding holds and refunding purchases. Youll never know what its like, novice programmer

b&r

Ah so you're a literal webdev monkey having the nuts to call other people fake programmers. cringe and bluepilled

Attached: 1516895479537.jpg (387x437, 40K)

Ok guys, this idiot is a complete larper. Clearly the buzzword jargon is strong in this fellow, placing him in a middle-management position instead of being a programmer

You think i process payments in js? lmao ur fuckin retarded. Spring is a java framework

Is your mom cute though?

> Alphabet soup of a chain of horribly written middle ware sublets
You're a web/app developer chaining together sloppy ass framework applets to achieve a business case. They need people like you now because cheap ass corporations didn't want to pay for properly written [non-free] middleware/back-end software and standardize the front-end and web facing portion. You work for a bunch of niggers who didn't properly fuel/fund the the Eco-system they bootstrapped atop and now need an army of code monkeys familiar w/ the latest framework some new grad just put up on github. Bloobernets and fractional chode JS. Real software engineers don't write code atop frameworks/languages that sound like na edgy teenager made them up after getting illegally drunk with his friends.

I used to live like this.
It was fun while it lasted, but it probably took 10 or more years of my total life expectancy and get diabetes

You just dont know anything about modern java frameworks. Spring boot microservices lets anyone run a local docker that acts like a server and makes development easier.

Nobody else wants to write the programs I want to use.

Dumb nigger doesnt know the difference between a front end js dev and a backend java dev

Dude, seriously, just stop. This is fucking embarrassing

Attached: 1525068917047.jpg (720x575, 28K)

Why is Jow Forums so obsessed with petty oneupsmanship? Sure, all of Jow Forums is to some extent, but this board takes it to ridiculous levels.
Why not just fucking discuss technology, not try to use one's tech opinions to gain status points on an anonymous forum?

This. Build shit for yourself then email companies/people and try to sell it.

what are you doing to market and share with the community?

github is just like twitter you have to get into conversations with other people and fucking participate

Years and years of kindling a smarter-than-thou complex followed up by being put into an industry where literally everyone constantly jerks themselves off over how smart and up to date they are

Because people here are obsessed with being lel genius, so they argue about ridiculous nonsense

No seriously you dont know dick about javaee or the enterprise software industry. Stop larping like you know how to program when you are an electrical engineer. You made it clear youre a hobbyist at best

hello, EE guy here. i stopped replying after you told me embedded isn't real programming. there are multiple people calling you a retard here.

Yeah sure lmao. You said
>real software engineers don't write code atop frameworks
Only an embedded systems """"programmer"""" would make such an ignorant statement.

Is it for something particularly niche? I have such a project, but looking at the archives the subject it deals with has literally never been mentioned on Jow Forums prior to myself. So I'm not too surprised at the lack of response when I've posted it before.

I actually have 1 fork though, but the account seems to just be forking lots of random repositories and has never made a commit.

How's the documentation/README for the project? I know this is something I need to improve on for my own before expecting much new interest. Maybe start on a comprehensive tutorial about both the general subject and how your project fits in.

>make basic photo filter editing tool
>ugly UI but it works
>project gets popular
>some guy forks it
>fork suddenly stops being developed
>new paid app does what my tool
>it's those guys who forked it
My fucken face when they copypasted my original code and just added a normie friendly UI on top of it.

Attached: cryingjew.png (544x611, 476K)

I gave it a fully fleshed out wiki and readme, GNU GPL2 license, and it builds for any architecture you could think of. it's a computer vision program that allows users to do a bunch of different CV shit in a seamless beginner friendly way through their webcam

Thats what you get for giving away for work for free

>I'm being ignored, give me attention Jow Forums reeeee
>No way I'm going to show you MY project, it is simply too awesome!

Not even a hint, user?

i hope you used a good license

>My gh is linked to my university profile which has my name, email and phone number.

..Why? All you need is an burner email address on your git for contacts.

No wonder nobody forks it when they don;t know it exists. I wonder if brandnewjscuck cares if his name is out there.

this is what you get for using cuck license

It's public on github
how are any of us worse than random people who stumble on your project via git?

This is Jow Forums. You don't use this website unless you're a toxic hunk of human garbage.

Fuck you I am a hoot IRL

I think they just gave one There's 100+ things related to "webcam CV" at least, though. Searching the name of the subject of the project I mentioned has exactly 18 repos, and almost half of those are mine.

I've met 3 people from Jow Forums, 2 are married and have kids and stable jobs for like 10 years. I met them from /b/ like 15 years ago. The other has a stable job but forever alone.

Almost all actually used open-source is actually developed by paid developers who were specifically paid to develop it. FOSS is a huge meme

> cucked
That's what you get for putting your hard work out there for free

Talk about it to your frens, on ycombinator, on redd*t, ask for input, etc. Talk about it to some hotshots in the subjects, they can give you exposure
Make a twitter account for the repo
Start posting with the relevant hashtags so your repo shows up when someone look for an hashtag or is subscribed to it.

>I met them from /b/ like 15 years ago.

Let us be the judge of that. Post link faggot

>Let us, a bunch of neets larping as software engineers, be the judge of that

No thanks lad

We've all met people from Jow Forums. That anorak sitting at the bus stop? He's on Jow Forums. That joker always posting "spicy" memes on his Fagbook timeline? He got them from Jow Forums. Your mate that absolutely nothing fazes him or offends him? He's a /b/ veteran.

Javascript was the biggest programming mistake of the 2O1O's

Fucking Millenials

Your Trump-voting parents? Contributing OC to /hc/.

Then why make a thread here in the first place?

I'll pay that one, user.

Give me your repo on the IRC channel, I'll give you a start and make a PR.

op how does it feel to be outclassed by the average javascriptus africanus

Attached: javaSCRIPT.png (1280x720, 1.01M)

Your repo probably doesn't have a SJW blue hair trans-feminist turboqueer friendly Code of Conduct. Why would anyone contribute when they might be mocked?

Attached: 595e9e2bd084cc6a298b709c-750-563.jpg (750x563, 45K)

Since OP is not posting his repo I'm posting a repo of mine.

It's just some hacked together shit, but it does its job.

If your body can take all that, that's one of the reasons you take it.

Nice. I can appreciate people making backup tools. I have written so many adhoc things when I decide to change my organization system or some shit. But those tools are single use, so ironically, they're never backed up themselves.

>600+ commits
>590 of them being README.md edits

>not using a copyleft license
you either go Stallman free or go home

>using MIT
Were you tricked by Reddit or something? Why wouldn't you use the GPL?

>hate js because freeballin shit never works like you want it and terribly shit optimisation
>coworker tells me about typescript, basically js, but much more rigid and just werks.

Gotta be honest, im about to change my mind.

Attached: 1485285410871.jpg (231x218, 7K)

The only thing I disliked when I had to use JS was the fact that there were no types with the declarations. What kind of cowboy yeehaw language is this.
If you just had type saftey, I wouldn't mind using it if I had to.
Curious about Dart and others as well. Typescript seems to be the one though.

Thank you. I only wrote this tool to keep my files on an external HDD synced. Every backup took like 17 hours. Now it finishes in 3 hours. Mainly due to big files that often changed but only partially.

I uploaded it to github so I don't loose the sources of the n-th tool again.

>huge fake spike in "code" frequency from when I deleted and re-added a bunch of generated documentation files because I didn't understand that git clone doesn't preserve the modification date of files
I thought a git clone would set the file system's modification date of the file to when it was last modified in the repo, but of course it's just based on when the clone occurred and what random order the files were cloned in, meaning sometimes the generated files were "older" than the source so "make all" would rebuild them. The issue being that building the docs requires the tools from the same repository and building the tools required building the docs. I've since separated it into "make all" and "make docs".

>548 commits
>don't have a readme

That's the life of an artist. There'll always be things that appeal to what you would consider the lowest common denominator. Genuinely new useful improvements to software tends to be ignored for fads.

Make something people want right now, or make something you think is useful and beautiful to you.

why do you care? i create things inorder to improve. my personal projects are just reminders of the skills i've acquired. they're mostly for me to enjoy and remember - any serious work i'll do in the future will be commercial

The best work I ever did in '''open source''' was for an avionics company as a short semester long job. I was under a heavy nda and didnt even bother making the repository private cause I knew only NewFaggotFramework++.js and heavily shilled projects got any attention. posting shit in the hope of github brownie points aint the way to go chief.

How many stars does your most popular repo have? 45 here.

3 stars, 5 forks. the 3 stars are from other people who contributed.

One star and one fork all by different people.
