I've been lurking here for a few months and I noticed that a pretty recurrent theme is the creation of a Jow Forums Operating System. However, most set goals are way too ambitious given the ability of Jow Forumsanons to organize such a project, or even code it. The closest to a Jow Forums distro is CloverOS, which is just basically a very basic Gentoo flavor. So instead of trying to make everything from thin air, which is impossible, why not create a common LinuxFromScratch project ? This would make the project of a Jow Forums OS much easier, since the source code already exists, and all linux compatible applications would work on this distro. However, for such a project to function properly, we would need to know what the end result should look like. The best way to know what direction to take would be to take all suggestions posted here, and create internet polls to know which is the most popular option. So, do you have any suggestions ? Should it be a stripped OS ? An OS that is already complete for desktop use out of the box ? A security oriented OS ? Post all your suggestions and I'll write them down, be it window managers, systemd free option or file managers. Feel free to post ideas of logos, or windows decorations. What should be its name ? LarpOS ?
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
No SystemD. It shouldn't be a question, SystemD is a disaster.

that's what voting is for m8

>tiling window manage vs overlapping window manager I'm using Linux as my only OS for over 10 years and have no idea what that is.
What is the alternative? SysVinit is shit.

In case OP actually doesn't know, we have this thread ~biweekly. I know some anons have kernal projects but they aren't associated with Jow Forums necessarily.
It would be written in C only. It won't have systemd nor pulseaudio. It would be a rolling release. It'll have too many logos. It won't install on any Intel CPU's It would have Gnome3, Gnome shell and any Gnome3 dependency blacklisted.
Binaries should be linked statically. This is made possible by lightweight system components like musl libc, and a central source repository to keep track of system-wide dependencies. Software components should be built in a way that allows the user to easily customize and/or modify as needed. Sources can be referenced through a URL or git submodule, but not included directly in the oasis repository. This way, users only need to download the sources they are interested in. /etc directory should be simple enough for system administrators to understand in its entirety and customize appropriately.
Components: oasis uses software from a lot of different packages. The core system is built up from the following:
>secure OS when will this literal meme fucking die?
Xavier James
I don't even know what it means Does it just mean packing disk encrypting software and Tor in the OS ?
Andrew Ramirez
it means nothing is safe and you're already known. America, China, Russia, England, Israel,, etc etc. there is some type of dossier on you. (((tor))) wont protect you and neither will VPNs.

>make custom Desktop Environment vs use an already existing one strawpoll.me/16331460
>>Clarifications : by "making a desktop environment" I mean just assembling different elements of what makes a desktop, not programming an entire wm. What this poll means is : should we use an entire preexisting DE, like KDE plasma, LXDE, LXQt, Xfce, MATE, Unity, or should we make a custom DE, like openbox + pcmanfm + tint2 etc ?
Landon Cruz
FagOS - built on OP technology. The only OS that's fake and gay by default.
Jack Rivera
>make custom Desktop Environment vs use an already existing one Why isn't >he uses a desktop environment an option?
Jordan Wilson
this make it happens. also more to gaymes centric os with wine and shit preinstalled

can I run our discord? I got a thinkpad

ExpandDong OS

Just base it off of XV6

another one for the graveyard so far we have CloverOS and LogOS
I'm IN! From all 9000 linux distributions I can't pick one that I like. Let's make 9000 and one distribution which will just work. :^)
Is this a good way to make college/university project without much effort? "Making GNU/Linux distribution with random strangers from internet" it's pretty much real world scenario.

Shouldn't we create our own actual OS? An original kernel and all? I don't see the point in making a Linux distro, we all already run one, and we're all already probably happy with it. An actually original from scratch OS though? That could be a fun project! Imagine the screenfetch
Why not use or fork existing projects? If we start from scratch it’ll end up like NetRunner.
Benjamin Miller
>Shouldn't we create our own actual OS? this would be way too complicated, and it would never finish. Creating a LFS project is already the most complicated project Jow Forums has worked on. The other OS were just flavors of Gentoo and Arch. This is linux from scratch.

>Should it be a stripped OS ? yes >An OS that is already complete for desktop use out of the box ? no, keep normies out >A security oriented OS ? yes >LarpOS ? >larp and rock penguins seems fine
Aaron Bailey
It's linux from scratch, you literally have tutorials on youtube on how to do it. The real challenge here is to know what Jow Forums wants regarding the DE, WM, utilities etc...
I did. I hope some day Jow Forums will successfully create a good OS that is actually it's own thing.
Joseph Reed
this seems very unlikely, this would require many actual competent coders with a great orgazisation
Gavin Long
Liberty OS
Christopher Green
sad, I hope I wasn't such an incompetent fucker. I can't contribute on anything except voting. I'm guessing the rest 80% of Jow Forums is like me
Owen White
>dont be too ambitious >your existing os isnt ambitious enough buh
Camden Ross
well yeah, a simple ricing isn't enough, and a WHOLE OS is just impossible
Carter Reed
The logo is ugly.
Joshua Powell
Have you got an idea of what it should try to represent ? Something abstract, a plant or an animal ?
Nolan Ramirez
Hey, just asking if anyone here uses Telegram since I'd like to create a Telegram channel for this.

I don't but I would create an acc for this

I think this form is more cover-like, so I'd go with that. I'm mean, both are ugly as sin but I like the idea of a clover butterfly.

I'll try to make another clover butterfly

Can we not use Telegram? If I really have to, I will create an irc.

shat this one out i also like the butterfly thing but i think the clover thing would look better and the middle bit (whateveritscalled) needs some redesigning
