Nobody cares about software being free

Nobody cares about software being free

Attached: 1502514574460.jpg (1024x768, 294K)

say again?

and why should they

honestly only soiiboiis care about "muh free software"

is RMS the CWC of software?

thats probably the best analogy ever made

Can anyone give me a non autistic argument for why all software should be free?

There are those who aren't totally stupid, and those who are totally stupid.

Can anyone give me a non autistic argument for why all software should be proprietary?

Everybody who isn't a consumerist does. Which is few people indeed.
>my same face when people talking about games on linux as a good thing

Imagine:
Linux server OS cost $10,000
HTTP server cost $3000
DB server cost $4000

Currently they're all free.

We could but judging from your post you'd only call them autistic and dismiss them.

For one, being able to look at the components of a machine you are using permits you (or someone who could tell) to make sure it isn't fucking with you.

Explain that to your grandma

make better software then faggot

>software that paid professionals tend to
vs
>software that every bugsy and mugsy can alter

I'd rather have guaranteed working products than the illusion of freedom. I've never contributed to FOSS code because the only time I acknowledge it is when something breaks.

No.

CwC is a trap faggot.

RmS is a world traveler genius chad alpha.

Most free software developers are paid.

If you think software is of higher quality because it's proprietary, I assure you it is not. Ever since the late 90s proprietary developers have been quite eager to cut costs by ignoring security practices and hiring cheap outsourced programmers.

I can't remember the last time my wifi/audio drivers stopped working because of an update in windows.

I havent had my wifi drivers not work since I started using GNU/Linux years and years go.
That's a meme of the past, hardware support is excellent right now.

Cool story bro, your hardware vendor is responsible for providing you working drivers

should the internals of a car only be accessible to the manufacturer?

He has working drivers for windows. If special snowflake programmers cannot do their magic to get drivers for their special snowflake system, it's their responsibility and their problem.

richard stallman is an omega male

>special snowflake
Linux is literally the most popular kernel in the world.

Yeah, us real men care about good shit. Like playing the latest games on our epic RGB gaming battlestation rigs with good old Windows installed.

Yeah right that's why it has 2% market share on desktop and is tainted to the brim with proprietary bundles on Android. I guess it's cool that supercomputers run it but then again it might as well be running heavily modified proprietary magic instead, people get paid to care for that.

true for free as in freedom

not true for free as in no pay. linux took over the server market because of that very reason. no one wants to shell out for an expensive enterprise OS after they've already spent loads on the hardware.

>Desktop market
Unimportant
>Proprietary bundles
Inconsequential

That isn't why it's used in the server market

>>Desktop market
>Unimportant
Main purpose of computers.
>>Proprietary bundles
>Inconsequential
Defies the purpose of the FSF and FOSS as a whole.

The FSF wants nothing to do with "FOSS".

You're a retard. So the entire purpose of FOSS to you is things you can dick around with?

>Main purpose of computers.
100% false
>Defies the purpose of the FSF and FOSS as a whole.
They will be removed eventually or the phones will become obsolete

>100% false
Okay you dumb sperg, turn off Jow Forums and go calculate some bullshit numbers in cobol or fortran.

I prefer Python and R thank you

Okay grandma, I’ll bite.

It’s the next presidential election. You’ve vote for awesome guy using one of them fancy computer voting machines. And so did all your friends. And the whole town/district/state. Only, when they count the results, not-so-awesome-mc-fuckface won. Everyone is confused and nobody can explain why that guy won. So you interject with the voting bureau and demand a recount. But the voting bureau just tells you:”hey, we just read out what the machine says. Everything fine on our end. We don’t know how those things work anyway.” So you go to the voting machine company and ask them to explain how their machine works. And the voting machine company tell you to fuck off, because how the machine works is a proprietary secret and non of your business.

Now wouldn’t it be nice if you could just look inside that voting machine to see if it’s been tampered with?

because 'free' and 'open' software/operating systems can't use proprietary software without exploding. It's the same shit Apple does; you can't use anything outside of their ecosystem. 'Free' my fucking ass.

>right to fix
>right to know ingredients of something you use
>right to freely use something that is on your machine in any manner you want
>right to freely improve ideas

Attached: 20180808_095125.jpg (2245x2312, 3.55M)

i care. open source is usually an indicator that the devs support the os im using.

>look inside the voting machine
Nobody ever ever would allow you to look inside the voting machine. Get real. Go and ask if you can watch people count the ballots, why don't you?

>elementaryOS
>last update: 13 months ago
KEK. Proprietary software gets people paid for support.

ah well you see there was tampering with votes in all swing states and this could spell trouble for trump during the 3 month comment period after which he will be president for life

Under communism everyone would own and have full acess to the voting machines

Literally not the free operating system's fault. Proprietary vendors are interested in forcing you to use whatever proprietary platform they have their tentacles in. Their whole reason for existing is to make sure you can't use anything outside their ecosystem.

>what is election monitoring

So that's why no communist/socialist nation has ever allowed people access?
Face it, nobody in power would let an angsty sperg put his nose everywhere.

ill log into 10 occassionaly to find the volume icon wont open. my other desktop i have to restart the audio device in device manager to get stereo working. dont assume that just because youre not having issues that its perfect for everybody, there are hardware manufacturers that will stop supporting new windows properly in an effort to get users to upgrade.

Yyyeaaah I'm using an old ass creative card with win7 drivers and works fine in windows. What's yours?

i dont use elementary and i donate to the distro i do use. so...

rms is the childish, petulant sperg I've ever seen. I don't care about his political views because he's clearly a massive fucking hypocrite. Just look at his obsession with controlling the words people use because he's still butthurt about Torvalds getting to the kernel first.

I hate this fucker so much. I hate his whiny, chipmunk voice. Fuck him.

asus xonar dx and the laptop is also an asus. guess who im never buying hardware from again?

>asus worse than creative
WAAAAHAHAHAHAH
No but tell me more, I wanted to buy an asus soon.

>AMD is kind enough to make graphics drivers specifically designed to work on Linux
>i-it's still their fault when it never works!
nah.

This plus how he goes off on tangents and "speaks in paragraphs". And you can tell by his website he only posts rants when he gets screwed over.

>Making the hardware work is not the hardware vendor's responsibility
Cool story bro

theres also an atheros card in this pc that neither 10 nor linux can figure out properly. worked fine in 7.

>Literally not the free operating system's fault.
So when you draw the line, does your OS work or not? No? Too bad, the comptetition does. Come back when you do your thing and fix it.

My OS works fine.

>the competition
If by that you mean proprietary software, yes it works, but not for you and me. It works for its owner.

>buying asus
I would recommend against it. since the 10 upgrade, touchpad lost its ability to be disabled, half the function keys are inoperable, and the sporadic audio volume issue. any fixes are undone by 10's creator updates as it uninstalls anything it deems incompatible.

>My OS works fine.
For what, using vim?

it's never the 'free operating system's fault' with these spergs. They're elitists and prefer to retain their smug sense of superiority rather than make their OS usable.

Computing

My OS is usable. PEBKAC

>Computing
So you've downgraded your PC to a 1940s calculating machine? Retard.
>My OS is usable. PEBKAC
>Linux doesn't natively support visual studio 2017 enterprise
Okay sweaty

'usable' after wasting tens of hours learning how it works so you can accomplish the same tasks you could do on windows

>PEBKAC
way to prove my point, sperg

you don't care about usability, you're a snob like most of the ugly, overweight posers on this board

I can, my sweet summerchild

>software that is full of bugs (which you can't get rid of), malicious software, spyware that paid professionals tend to

Ftfy

>1940s calculating machine
All computers are still fundamentally the same thing. Your PC is a tool for doing math. Just because you use it to waste time playing video games and watching porn doesn't change this

>visual studio 2017 enterprise
Proprietary software and the enemy of your freedom

>waah learning is difficult
Textbook baby duck syndrome

>my same face when people talking about games on linux as a good thing
so Linux should only run free software?

observe how the FOSS used instantly resorts to insults and stale dogmas when his stupid software philosophy is exposed for the nonsensical drivel that it is

>y-you're not willing to hop everywhere rather than walk? git gut xD

this is an all-too-common case of a linux used scorning what he can't have

Even if you weren't lying, you can switch to a competitor's product easily. Unlike Linux where it's either clion (yay) or code::blocks (NAY!)
>doing math
Factually wrong. Stop living in the 1940s with your twisted introverted sperg mind.
>enemy of your freedom
There's nothign wrong with visual studio at all, unless you'd like to cherrypick some arbitrary features and spout your subjective opinion on them.
Learn to use popular tools rather than obscure ones and acting like you were a part of their creation and spread.
>baby duck syndrome
It's natural selection, software that's difficult to use and does less will be absolutely left behind in the face of the opposite. Nobody cares if it makes spergs feel warm on the inside, that's of no help to anyone.

Notice how the proprietary cunt is too brainlet to learn things and instead is trying to bait me into performing tech support and training for him for free. Go ask in the stupid questions thread you troglodyte

Why would I ever want proprietary software?

>Nobody cares about software being free
Until someone takes it away.

>its good because its difficult
You were the type of kid to glue lego bricks together, weren't you? And then suck on the glue.

>Factually wrong.
No. You literally don't know how a computer works or what it does
>Learn to use popular tools
No. Those are tyranny of the majority
>There's nothign wrong with visual studio at all
No. It's proprietary
>software that's difficult to use and does less
That describes all proprietary software

It isn't difficult

you've reached the point of self-parody

>No. You literally don't know how a computer works or what it does
Ad hominem.
>No. Those are tyranny of the majority
Proof?
>No. It's proprietary
Not an argument.
>That describes all proprietary software.
Factually wrong. Popular proprietary software is click-and-run.

>It isn't difficult
The windows 7 install can be done with a few click on "Next". Meanwhile Debian asks me what my timezone is, what keyboards I use, what DE I want and other botnet like that.

Try harder you dumb sperg. You're getting smashed so far, sad.

being able to read the source has pulled me out of the shit many times desu

this. software as a service is becoming more prevailant. id rather have the freedom to install krita on as many computers and teach it to as many people, rather than being limited to 3 installs and paying a monthly subscription to adobe.

Stop acting like you own 30 computers and you're such a huge fan of Krita.

>debian is the botnet
nice b8

have fun paying $30 a month to play your cod collection.

>Ad hominem.
Garbage in, garbage out
>Proof?
You
>Not an argument.
Neither is "it's good because it's popular"
>Popular proprietary software is click-and-run.
Too bad that software is useless
>The windows 7 install
Stopped reading there, Windows is proprietary and the enemy of your freedom

The only joke here is proprietary software

lmao, fucking cucks are the ultimate soiboy hating audience
it's a twisted form of self-hatred

>>Ad hominem.
>Garbage in, garbage out
>>Proof?
>You
>>Not an argument.
>Neither is "it's good because it's popular"
>>Popular proprietary software is click-and-run.
>Too bad that software is useless
>>The windows 7 install
>Stopped reading there, Windows is proprietary and the enemy of your freedom
Literally no arguments, as expected. Freetards are obsessed spergs too scared of change. They like to hoard their v0.1 programs and compile them over and over.

I've always thought that NT is special snowflake

>conflating Free software with Open-source

Attached: wdwdwdwd.png (858x725, 361K)

>caring about the 'difference'

Attached: u.png (420x360, 71K)

what? why post a stallman if thats not the point of the thread? free software - open source, he just doesnt like the term 'open source' because the 90s media twisted it to mean you cant make money from it. but the whole point is gpl license and source available once purchased.

>Go and ask if you can watch people count the ballots, why don't you?
But we can do this in Australia, the UK, I think Canada. I do it myself every election, it's called 'scrutineering'. Imagine not having freedom.

>Why would I ever want proprietary software?
Because sometimes proprietary software doesn't have a free alternative

>L I B R E

Attached: gnuclear.png (601x469, 217K)

Yes. Otherwise it turns into Google's Android. Users might as well stick to Windows at that point.

You are talking open source then, not free.

Yes, they are two different things.

Naive. Don't talk about costs, you know nothing of the real world.

I do

Ok, purely hypothetical. Let's say major corporations like Microsoft started releasing their products (Windows, Word, etc) with source code available to inspect, and modify for personal use/non profit.

How would that affect them? Would you be more willing to use their products in such a case?

i care, however i dont care about throwing out my hardware or changing jobs because some old neckbeard reeeeee's at proprietary software. And i mostly care because FOSS is comfyware that doesn't spam me with notifications, ads or run multiple instances of chromium in order to automatically check for updates that happen once a year (thx autodesk)

It's a good iniciative, but some sotfwares being paid actually tackle the industry better. If someone has the benevolence to make a free software that works just as good as the paid ones, people will use it.

But there is no reason to go full "activist" about it.

I'm ok with paying, I'm not ok with paying $850
