Is there something to these things? Are they really better than digital amps, or do they just look really cool?

>no, no, you see, we have to wait and heat them up before we can actually listen to it really good
>you just wait for it, user
>great, gotta go, kthxbai
>Are they really better than digital amps?
Just measurement-wise, no. They're different. And can look comfy af.
I'll redpill you the best I can on tube amps, however I should suggest that you listen to a good tube amp on a pair or suitably sensitive loudspeakers before making any armchair assumptions. That includes you guys, measuebaiters.
The reason why a lotta folks prefer tube amplification is the measurable and audible distortion these amps provide in 3rd and 7th order harmonics. It's these areas that our ears are sensitive to in perceiving what is "real" sounding. There's differnt schools of thought regarding tube amplification but me, personally, im of the belief that the only thing a tube amp has any right doing in a system is powering the midrange and top end of a speakers frequency response. Unless the woofers are ultra sensitive, and horn loaded, you should be using solid state. Likewise, push pull tube amps are, IMO, a waste of time, just go with a good solid state if you can. The best tube amps are the ones with massive output transformers, and under 10w. To use these likes of amps, you need speaker sensitivity of at least 98db 1w/1m. Pic related, my amp and my (old) speakers. I COULD have used a tube amp with them, and they would have sounded beautiful. But solid state offers more advantages over tubes in all but the most sensitive of speakers.
lol is that really your setup?
'Twas at one point, yep. My source gear is the same, I have sideeenr speakers now.

There's no such thing as a digital amp. There are no ones and zeroes involved, everything is an analog signal. There's tube and solid state, but that just refers to the technology used for amplification. People will call class D amps digital, but that's either marketing wank or a misunderstanding of the technology from them.
sweet. I just bought my first turntable, a beogram 5500 with a brand new MM3 cartridge. I don't have a setup for it yet, what do you recommend? I need an amp, some speakers, and I guess a mixer?

was looking at this for an integrated amp that does streaming so I can play spotify or whatever on it too.
You still messed it up.
