I've tried multiple times to install linux. No matter what I do, It just doesn't work well. Slow to do simple tasks, my games that say they're compatible don't work, unexpected crashes.
I don't understand how people say this stupid penguin is better than M$. They're both awful.
>Install is sucessful! >Welcome to Grub 2! ? boot >please load kernel first lookup solution online ls ....... Kernel not found ls.... ls.... ls... .Kernel not found exit
The first step to have an openly avaiable system is having it work first
I've attempted mint on two occasions and Ubuntu thrice. Every time I had some critical error that I couldn't figure out or find a solution to. Linux is supposed to be the future, why does it suck ass?

>try installing ubuntu >crashes during install >can't figure out what's wrong >just in case check the MD5 of the ISO I downloaded >it doesn't match >WTF >download again >different md5 which is STILL wrong >download again >matches >install with new image, werks perfectly
Fuck, what botnets did I just install, Jow Forums? Or is my HD/RAM dying?

ubuntu + xfce is the only just werks option for desktop use. i went through these in order and the reason i switched: >mint - buggy graphics, screen flickering and tear >ubuntu - didnt like the android looking ass windows 8 start menu GUI >debian: shit didnt let me install due to non free drivers required so fuck that dumb commie nonsense shit. >manjaro: xfce win95 theme icons were not changing properly
back to Ubuntu but by now i had learned to change default DE to XFCE >drivers just werk >themes just werk >icons just werk >no screen tear >software just werks (dont use ubuntus default package manager. use it only to get synaptic do Ubuntu minimal install which does not come with botnet. install chicago95, pic related is debian on a vm, but it works even better in ubuntu
ps: i went back to windows 10 after some weeks anyway. linux is not ready for desktop use, try uninstalling a program with one click lmao
If you are a new Linux user and you are encountering consistent issues, please check the following things: >You do not have an experimental mirror enabled >If you are using a rolling release distro check the appropriate channels for any issues with the current release >If you are not using a rolling release distro ensure that you are using a stable release >Your package cache is up-to-date and you have reliable mirrors enabled >Perform the same types of checks for the desktop environment that is installed

Very similar linux timeline for myself. I am convinced people here pretend to use linux only for screenfetch threads but go back to windows after that. its almost always a laptop resolution anyway, very rarely seen on real desktops. 99% of my time with all the distros i tried was nothing but bug fixing for shit that should be already built in and never had to worry about in Windows. if you value your time and want to get actual work done, stay in Windows
Actually some people have very good reason to use Linux. According to a Stack Overflow survey almost 1/4 of all developers have used Linux and almost 1/2 will have developed for the Linux platform just this year, and this is just one population of users. There are many people whose most useful native tools live on the Linux platform.
nobody has a hard disk for desktop OS booting anymore. is all your os has to offer is fast boot time over the competition? mind you. i know linux is good for privacy like watching kiddie diddling porn or whatever and you will not be caught. but for practical desktop use assuming you never watch porn on your machine. linux has nothing to offer over windows
Please note that part of the survey was for the OS the developers use personally. I can't speak for everyone, but my primary use of the computer is professional and hobby programming as well as reading news articles. I also prefer a light environment for my daily use. It may not be how you use your computer, but that's fine, use Windows.
This would be the same as if I said that Windows isn't a real desktop environment because it doesn't allow you to use a light window management system or because it doesn't come with a development environment or the ability to install development packages out of the box. I might also say that anyone that uses Windows is just pretending to use it because it isn't optimal for how I use computers. That's just silly.
Certainly not everyone uses their computer this way, in fact the great majority do not. I am not arguing that. But some productive people do use Linux this way, and these are some of the people promoting Linux. They are certainly not pretending.

This. Use Windows like you would if you were in a coffee shop or library with people constantly peeking at your screen. Then when you got necessities pull out your corebooted thinkpad with linux and vpn and good firewall, cover the webcam with tape, and fap to your heart's content.
I use QubesOS and it compartmentalizes my virtuals into different task so I can segregate my banking from my cryptos from my general browsing. And from a security standpoint it's awesome because it runs stateless images. So I'm free to install software and try it out whenever I want without it being persistently installed unless if I want it to be I don't game I only do things work and productivity related and qubes is light years ahead of windows

desu the safest way to watch le dirty kike porn is to download it with vpn, put it on a shared folder on an isolated network, file transfer to a laptop that only has LAN access. disconnect lan as you watch, easy
Tyler Carter
replace linux with openbsd
Dylan Ramirez
ok, this actually makes sense and is a valid reason to use it. however still not related to stable desktop OS outside of privacy
Thomas Stewart
Maybe Linux just isn't for you.

These two variations of the meme only showed up today.
This variation only goes back to the 16th of August.
Could this be more shilling because of Steam/Proton, unofficial or even official?
With Linux If things break it's almost always the users fault by blindly installing software by copying apt-get commands form the internet. Stop being a faggot.
Juan Allen
Linux is a piece of shit Install TrueOS or OpenBSD
>install mint on moms low end lenovo laptop >everything just werks out of the box >setup firefox with ublock origin >never had to do any maintenance in years
This is what it would take someone who doesn't even know what is a computer to install gentoo.
Dylan Robinson
wifi? bluetooth? give laptop specs is firefox the only program she runs?
Brandon Turner
I have been using Xubuntu since 10.10. I've had an obsolete machine running Xubuntu as my daily driver and relegated my seperate windows machine to literally only vidyagaems for about eight years now and it's the best decision I've ever made. It just fucking works. A C2D with 8GB of RAM and a GT210 is sufficient for 99% of daily driver tasks.
Julian Gonzalez
wifi and bluetooth worked ootb. i don't remember the model name/specs, if this thread is still up in like 5 hours i'll ask her and post it. all i remember is that the name started with an E (i think) and it has an i3 processor, but it's not a thinkpad. i couldn't find it on lenovo's website, it's probably too old (came with windows 7). >is firefox the only program she runs? pretty much. that and skype for video calls. webcam and mic worked without any configuration as well. it was really refreshing that i didn't have to do anything after installation. probably the best experience i've had with any distro so far, on my personal laptop (acer v3-771) i had a lot of issues related to the nvidia drivers on linux.
James Cox
Just use Ubuntu LTS or Debian if you want rock solid and everything working (Debian requires installing some packages to get some hardware features enabled, basically why Ubuntu was created).
Mint is usually fine but doesn't have nearly the amount of manpower going into the main Ubuntu.
I use it on a daily basis on a desktop. It's more complicated to do certain things that are easy to do on Windows, but it's worth it for freedom and stability. I was getting really tired of Windows rebooting in the middle of the night to install updates. The Windows drive still exists for now, because I haven't tried getting non-steam games working yet.
Thats great to hear, a bit surprising too. Personally I've had issues with wifi, bluetooth and sound, but never with the nvidia driver, probably because I always stand in that sweet spot where my card is just old enough and common enough to have perfect support.

> >Slow to do simple tasks whats your specs? What DE are you using? >my games that say they're compatible don't work again, specs? what games? and, steam games? >unexpected crashes again, specs?
>They're both awful. everything is awful, pick your poison
Connor Cruz
>slow to do simple tasks
I meant it's complicated to do things that are easily achievable on windows.
Games I was referring to were mostly non-steam games.
Unexpected crashes were actually a hardware change I made that I hadn't realized was causing it.
>do Ubuntu minimal install never do this, don't listen to this brainlet it takes longer and has a very good chance of not working, use the live xubuntu
