Never read or heard about anyone who's unlocked cores on a Ryzen CPU. I'm not saying it's not possible.

There absolutely was a possibility of unlocking cores on the Athlon II and Phenom II processors, though, specially the Athlon II x3's. These were either x4's with a "broken"/defective core which didn't work or simply fully working x4's with one core disabled because they were selling more x3's than they had x4's with a defective core. Anyway, it was random lottery if you got a x3 which could be "upgraded" to x4 or not.
