How do you do that thing where you gut an Ipod and replace it's hard drive with an ssd? The headphone jack (and just the headphone jack) on my phone is dying and since it's an iphone they can't replace the individual components, so I was thinking of getting an mp3 player just for music and podcasts. Any recommendations?

What's the best MP3/4 player I can find? Money isn't really an option, I just want something with decent capacity that doesn't come with the shit you'd typically find on a smartphone.

It would also be nice if it could support FLAC, but if I did to reconfigure to another codec it isn't a huge deal.

I own the classic too and it's such a piece of shit. Reason I will never buy Apple again. Crashes at least once a week, slow as shit, buggy as fuck. Never dropped it. Don't get me started on iTunes.

Its just a really simple file hierachy on the card and you get to memorize it real quick. You can have the player order by name or date added

here is unashamedly whats on my 64gb card... only 20 clicks of "next" and i have just run though the entire card. Its mainly for critical listening to hi-res files and i pepper it with a few mp3s here and there. Its remarkably intuitive and you dont need eyes to look at it. Much like the old ipods. very tactile.the knob is just sex and can use in a pants pocket in the dark. If i want to navigate a super huge library then i just whip out my phone.

Because vinyl has a unique sound, I have a pretty big vinyl collection (many inherited from my father), and because I DJ (people like seeing DJs use actual physical media for some reason plus it sounds better when scratching or chopping and screwing). iPod classics are just overrated, even today. Locked up bullshit, need to install third-party firmware to overcome its limitations (otherwise you're stuck using dedicated software), uses a HDD instead of flash memory, which makes it easier to break, just an overpriced mediocre device by today's standards, and even back then. You're just afraid to admit it since it represents a mythical past when Apple was "good" and you fell for it.
If you want a high quality dedicated player, get a FiiO or similar, they are getting better by the day.
