previous thread user and i discussed cached disks. used dd to benchmark the different storage backends on my virtual devices seems like caching a hdd and just using a ssd is no difference... basically you get ssd speeds at hdd capacity.
Installed Ubuntu. Plugged in ethernet cable. No Internet. WiFi works but ethernet doesn't.
Looking at systemlog but can't make sense of why DHCP isn't working. Have no idea how I would manually assign myself an IP / gateway etc
Luke Sullivan
Cinnamon of xfce?
Nolan Johnson
Linux is shit don't use it, don't expect good hardware support.
Samuel Green
search for dhcp on the arch wiki link in OP
Caleb Williams
did you try opening networkmanager to see if the ethernet device is there and configured? I think networkmanager should automatically find and activate upon plugging ethernet in.
Jayden Walker
But I'm on a T420, you'd think this would be one of the easiest things to support out of the box
I'm on xubuntu so I don't see "Network Manager" anywhere but running lshw shows both my ethernet and wireless interfaces. The config of ethernet says driver=e1000e and the product is 82579LM which I assume is Intel
Wish I had a way to dump logs but I don't have an Internet connection outside my phone. Should I try a different distro?
Adam Wright
Install GuixSD
Julian Jackson
Running ifconfig shows three different things, enp0s25, lo, and wlp3s0. I tried running dhclient enp0s25 and my terminal froze
Landon Barnes
dhcpcd enp0s25 should probably do it.
Cameron Nelson
Command dhcpcd not found
Easton Perry
try with sudo? you may need to install the package depending on your distro.
Aaron Jenkins
With no networking...
I guess I can try getting it on my phone and hoping USB transfers work
Hudson Martinez
Is this a genuine non-shooped photo? Would love to know the backstory
Jacob Barnes
what distro are you on anyway?
James Jones
Xubuntu on a t420
Lucas Butler
Also the only other thing I can think of is that I didn't have an Internet connection when installing but I don't think that should matter
How does Linux deal with files with spaces? Let's say I want to remove the Firefox ESR file from my /usr/share/applications folder, what would be the terminal command to deal with the space?
I ran sudo apt-get install (moved to a place with WiFi) and it says the latest version is installed
Not sure why ethernet isn't working though
Samuel Gonzalez
file\ name.ext
Dylan Morales
then try nm-connection-editor
Samuel Morris
Yup that brings up the network connections menu I've been looking at. Ethernet shows "Wired Connection 1" that has IPv4 set to "Automatic (DHCP)"
Jackson Rodriguez
So:
```udo rm /usr/share/applications/Firefox\ ESR```
Adrian Hill
yep. should work.
Jackson Martin
well then i'd try installing the dhcpcd package and using that. It's never failed me. also make sure your network manager service is enabled so it starts up on boot.
Jose Martin
yeah well you're using a graphical interface that is probably running a service that provides network configuration. no idea on xubuntu, but I'm almost certain it also uses networkmanager.
Xavier Hughes
Doesn't run while the file is clearly in /usr/share/applications/.
Zachary Bailey
I used dhcpcd but it didn't seem to work
control_open: Connection refused IAID cc:73:2b:etc Soliciting an IPv6 eouter Soliciting a DHCP lease router advertisement from xx::xx etc Adding default route via xx::xx etc Soliciting a DHCPv6 lease Probing for an IPv4LL address Using IPv4LL address 16x.xxx. Etc Adding route to 16x.xxx Etc adding default route Forked to background
Sorry I can't copy paste logs because I have to use my phone to post
Jose Evans
mkdir test cd test touch Firefox\ ESR.txt ls 'Firefox ESR.txt' rm Firefox\ ESR.txt ls
double check your typing and everything.
Josiah James
Install a different distro, don't use xfeces or ubuntu
Noah Peterson
It's definitely shooped, you really think she'd let that freak wrap its arm around her like that?
Kevin White
Trying to install Opensuse Tumbleweed on a old PC with a Dual-Core and a integrated GPU, I think it's a VIA Chrome9, I installed the distribution fine but when I reboot my PC it shows a loading(?) screen with 3 green dots and then it "crashes" back to tty1 login, what am I doing wrong here
Josiah Martinez
check your xorg logs, but more than likely you just need to install the driver for for your GPU.
Ian Rivera
>WiFi works but ethernet doesn't FWIW I've been using linux ~20 years and have never had this problem. Sounds like bad luck, faulty hardware, oddball hardware, or some combination of these
Benjamin Gutierrez
using arch I installed libsixel from the AUR, and I'm using a compatible terminal (mlterm), but nothing shows up in my terminal after running $img2sixel file.png -o - | cat
Henry Perry
It's just a T420 with an Intel ethernet adapter and ethernet was working this morning on Windows before I changed HDDs
Maybe I should just install Debian or Gentoo
Christian Johnson
Put the windows HDD back in and ethernet works.
I think I should try a different distro.
Charles Phillips
typically, networkmanager runs as an applet in the desktop environment. you manage connections from networkmanager in (as far as i know) all flavors of ubuntu. if you have a notification area then there should be a network notification. you should check there for an ethernet adapter. start with ubuntu, because networkmanager is made for GNOME
James Nguyen
So I've got a debian server, and it's got a whole bunch of music files on it. What's the easiest way to stream these to my phone?
Dominic Martinez
I installed xf86-video-openchrome but no change here is the Xorg log: pastebin.com/raw/QpgUJb74 Yast says the GPU is CN896 VN896 P4M900 [Chrome 9 HC]
oh boy do you have shit to debug, good luck m8
Xavier Turner
reading threads like these convinced me linux is shit
is there any reason to not generate locales for every language?
ur right but I don't know what else it could be, ST won't render Asian letters. >fontconfig shows CJK fonts installed >just generated locales for all languages for no reason >rebooted >tried fc-cache -f -v again >also tried xset +fp $HOME/.local/share/fonts/ && xset fp rehash (even tho it's mainly for bitmap/console fonts) >still won't render I'm out of ideas
>ST won't render Asian letters. you just need to install another font.
Lincoln Hernandez
how to make an application always on top in my openbox autostart.sh
eg. xclock &
Cooper Collins
the noto fonts worked fine in debian, but not after I installed arch... also doesn't work in urxvt
Parker Gutierrez
HAMMER2 is not as polished as ZFS
Ian Williams
That's why we install GNU on top of it
Daniel Gomez
That would make the system more shit. We use Linux without gnu to have a better system without religious political beliefs being thrown in our face every picosecond
Luis Davis
Alright, so I made the switch from windows to Manjaro. I lost all my data in the process. My question is, can I restore it somehow? I only got a 1tb hdd so it should be restorable, right? I only want two folders too.
fsf was founded by big belly stallman as a way for him to get donations so he could continue not contributing anything to society let alone the tech industry. They mimmick his "outrages" as policy to get people to further contribute to giving fatman stallman free money for doing absolutely nothing while forcing people to use gpl, furthering stallmans absolutely uselessness in the tech field. gpl users and people who donate to the fsf are fanatics of stallmans religious views and only further prove how communist he is. If you read the gplv3 and his website, you clearly see how mentally ill this man is and how the fsf have only encouraged his behavior instead of seeking medical treatment.
Asher Rivera
guy using xbuntu and having bizarre networking problems
i spent the evening installing guixsd instead and it actually fucking worked and networking worked. the fuck?
Julian Smith
buntu shit is trash, more at 11. now get off broken shit, and install arch already.
Jayden Powell
So I fixed the shadow error by making my own xorg.conf file and loading it in Section "Module" # Main Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "XORG_OPENSUSE"
Screen "XORG_SCREEN" EndSection
Section "Module" Load "shadow" EndSection
# Needs 64MB video memory in BIOS, mine is set 128MB #Section "Extensions" #Option "Composite" "Enable" #EndSection
# Monitor Section "Monitor" Identifier "1" EndSection however I still get an error in xorg log: pastebin.com/raw/zmBCkyTV any ideas?
Mason Perez
i think ill just stick with guix and wait for hurd. i only need emacs, gimp, icecat anyway. this is just a work laptop
Parker Walker
LOL thats your reply? Thats all you have to pathetically say? >LOL NO U
Luke James
go through the forum posts for Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:01:00.0: No such file or directory could be way too many things
Lincoln Evans
so should I install funtoo or clover os?
Luis Perez
nvm fixed it
Samuel Kelly
all I said was separation of church and state. the state won't allow the gpl religion to have any laws made, so the connection you made by saying >religious politics was what I was arguing against. I really could care less for your feelings on RMS and the GPL, but thanks for interjecting them.
Christopher Lewis
>try out xubuntu through USB live session >runs very nicely >attempt to install waterfox >open up the software program >window just plain does not load >decide I must not have had enough space or something for it to function, so format the drive, add more space, and try again >same shit happens >wait no, it's actually 10-20x slower >try to install waterfox from software, when I click the install button it just asks if I want to remove it despite not appearing in app menu >try installing foobar out of curiosity >it downloads, does not launch >installs synaptic >it gets stuck indefinitely on the update I feel so god damn shitty right now. It's been nine hours since I tried to install waterfox and now it's clearly not going to happen tonight. Someone please tell me what I did wrong.
Nicholas Howard
Friendly reminder, you no longer have to be shackled to gnu. Linux LLVM Clang Muslc Busybox Will allow you to escape your shackles and truly become free.
Ethan Powell
you installed *buntu shit.
Aiden Thomas
stall have to replace a myriad of utils, or i could just use BSD.
Eli Powell
but user, you would have an even bigger joke of an OS with absokutely atrocious font rendering
Oliver Ward
Can we create a "GNU vs. Linux" containment thread so all the faggots who want to have their debates about it can go over there instead of being here?
Hunter Rogers
You dont.
Jason Hall
Can someone redpill me on extra packages like intel-ucode? Why do these packages exist, they don't say anything specific as for what the packages does or is for just rather mention some vague ((((((((intel updates for cpus))))))))
Please red pill me, I don't know whether to install this jew package or not
t. arch user
Jack Jones
Do turn off secure boot to get it boot from usb?
Wyatt Lee
which DE is best for customization? "customization" here means i would probably swap out some components (e.g. file manager) and replace it with counterparts from another DE currently looking at LXDE and XFCE since they are pretty modular
