Canonical isn't as friendly to free software as Debian, Trisquel, Parabola and a few others.
Canonical started collecting user data since Ubuntu 18.04. Instead of opt-in, it's opt-out.
When Canonical gave up on Unity 8, one employee blamed the community.
Their software have clauses that say they can use contributed code in other programs under different licenses (including proprietary ones).
tl;dr if you can, install Debian or Trisquel

It's a LTS well supported Debian-based distro. I don't like how they "flavor" GNOME, so I'd get a minimal iso and install vanilla GNOME,
I'd rather stick with Debian so I can be sure it won't install any proprietary programs without explicit instruction.
