Should I buy a Surface Pro for uni?

I'm doing a maths degree and hate having to carry my laptop (thinkpad), lecture notes, and writing book with me everywhere and would prefer having something which i can write on and use as a laptop.
Are there any alternatives that i should consider that give me a similar ability to write equations and notes out like on paper?
And what are things I should know about before buying a laptop like this?

People originally used laptops for notes in class because it was much quicker than manually writing shit down, and now you want to pay over $1000 for a fucking glorified notebook. Reflect on your life choices.

LaTeX can be just as fast as typing out equations if you manage to learn it, is FOSS, and will help you for when you need to publish any paper or project in your field.

What if I don't want to be a freetard?

The alternative is being just a retard

I own a surface pro.
my advice is use a laptop.
hinged keyboards are your friends.

I study physics, which is similar in the sense that we both write a lot of maths.
From my observations, the people who take notes using a laptop (either by typing or touching) are all beta virgin students/quota filling women/minority students.
The real chads all use pen and paper, which leads to better learning retention as well as a better savings account.

Get a used Surface book 1, goes for less than a 2017 SP, and has a better keyboard.

No, get a Dell XPS 13.

The I need computer for uni is just a meme to display hardware.
You don't make equations in tests in laptop. You do with hands.
You only need CPU to search or write assignments you need to deliver.
Everything else is a meme

You should buy an iPad pro 512GB with keyboard and pencil

Even better idea: buy a Mac

Waste of money. All learning should be done with pen and paper. Everyone that uses laptops for note taking end up browsing facebook (roasties) or watching some beta twitch stream. Be a man, not a cuck.

No. I had a surface pro 3 once.
Throttled itself, lasted one year tops.
Biggest waste of $1000 ever.

>bringing up gender for no reason
really thought i closed Jow Forums out earlier

you're right. I'm sorry I forgot this is an intersex board. I'll try to be more accommodating to your private parts in the future.

Just started Master's program in math. Bought a 12'' iPad Pro w/ Apple Pen. Using GoodNotes, its the best fucking thing I've ever done for school for handwritten notes/work. Expensive, maybe not the most ideal solution, but its been a great solution for me so far.

I have one at work. Pretty nice device, but very jewish. Base cost isn't cheap, and everything is an extra: typecover (should be standard), dock, pen, ...

Buy an old laptop instead, you need power for what? Porn in HD? Fartnite?

For handwritten notes ipad is better stand alone “notebook” than surface line.
Everything else get a hinged laptop, type covers are shit

>let me just type out this diff eq real quick

But LaTeX is basically the standard that everyone uses.

The alternatives are expensive 13.5 inch e readers which are like a thousand dollars and not exactly workhorses like a proper computer.

You are honnestly better off with a 13 inch tablet yes, you have to option to type if you need to and draw charts and graphs in a notation program, but can install what you need and do other functions and run any program you want.

I bring my surface pro 4 to my lectures to take notes with OneNote. I like having a virtually infinite big paper to write on and keeps them organized. The battery usually holds on for a day, but it's a real pain in the ass when you forgot to charge it and you have no back up notebook.

I’m an old fag but the surface pro I picked up a few months ago is extremely comfy. Not sure if it would completely replace pen and paper but it’s great for light note taking and productivity tupe shit. There is a feature in OneNote where you can write out math equations with the pen and then circle them and using the math button it will convert the equation to text, eg pic related. If you’re considering a surface wait until the refreshes are announced early next month

Should I get the current 2017 pen or is there a new one coming out too?

hard to say surely the pen will be reverse compatible but not sure if they are introducing a new one

Had a surface pro 3. Was great until I lost my pen and the touch screen stop working eventually. If you liked your chinkpad why not go for x1 tablet?

I have a surface pro 4. For everything your decribing the sp is fucking great for it. Even handwritten note on onenote feels great. Its just a shit load of money for a decent one. If price isn't a huge factor i say go for it.

I bought and and enjoy it very much, but I only did because I got the i5 model with 8gbs of ram and the keyboard cover included for a good price, and it had way better specs than any regular laptop for the same price.

I'd still prefer a laptop, but I'd need it to have as good screen as the SP, especially the high resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio is fucking great. The keyboard and trackpad feels solid, better than many actual laptops that I've tried.

As for note taking with the pen, it feels very good. I don't type on keyboard when doing regular studying as I learn the material much better when using a pen, so the pro is great for this. You could save yourself money by just using regular pen and paper. Organizing handwritten notes in OneNote is useful though.

tldr absolutely worth it if you can find a good deal, or if you have a lot of money just get it either way since it's a quality device with lots of usefulness. You might want to wait for October as they're gonna announce new Surface products then.

I'm glad all my classes have power outlets for every seat

Is Microsoft running any education promotions? First semester out of school, so I picked up a new Mac while I still have my academic email account. Been pondering a Surface Go for shits giggles and exposure to the hardware and maybe for work too … been using a Thinkpad x120e with Linux. It’s a little pokey, but been getting my job done.
