all of my normie friends use pisscord and they are too much of double digits to ever use something else and don't understand that its literal botnet as fuck. Wat do? Get new friends?

you could try releasing yourself from this world

run discord in virtual machine
that's what I do

What can discord possibly gain from you if you don't connect it to anything like facebook or steam or some shit?

discord collects information about every program you run on your computer and sells it to advertisers

Outside of the blatantly obvious botnet and information mimimh that discord does, there's just something about it I don't like and I can't put it in words.

The greatest, most user friendly IM client was MSN, and I miss it dearly.

does a web version of discord also collect data? or only desktop version?

That's not a terrible idea, seems like a lot of effort though, if it's my only choice I might just do this

It has that fucking le redditor feel to the whole thing, from the second you boot it up and it talks about EPIC LE FORNITE MAY MES while loading, it makes me reach for my fucking strap every time I have to open it up to play openarena with my friends or some shit

Still better alternative to having facebook to talk with people, I've chosen lesser evil.

Ik its botnet but do you have a source for this, id like to send it to my friends.

with current year hardware it's nothing
plus, you can isolate other software if you want or whatever

yeah the privacy policy of discord

reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/43lqyb/why_is_discord_recording_our_open_programs_and/ - confirmed by CTO
also their privacy policy is fucked up

Attached: m6fdbianhgvz.jpg (1024x768, 252K)

No idea but I'm looking for an alternative too. The userbase is beyond cancerous and the devs only support the AIDS and faggotry. Discord's business model is baiting retards with epic maymays into linking their accounts, using their games hub feature, paying for Nitro, and adding yet another number to the botnet. We need an IRC replacement that's not full of this shit.

USE TEAMSPEAK

Just how else do you think they can afford to have the entire service free?

Are people really this autistic?

>We collect information from you when you voluntarily provide such information, such as when you register for access to the Services or use certain Services. Information we collect may include but not be limited to username, email address, and any messages, images, transient VOIP data (to enable communication delivery only) or other content you send via the chat feature.

So they literally keylog every message you send, fucking lmao I bet my normie friends will just say "NOTHUIN TO HIDE :DDDDD"

kill me

they say it's for the "Is playing" feature, and my normie friends will believe it, but ill keep these in a file somewhere next time we have this convo

Yes you brainlet. Why would you think otherwise?

have friends that are over the age of 30

Unfortunately on this board, yea

just use the web app

99% of people don't have anything to hide, so why the fuck would logging what you say even matter. I doubt anyone at Discord gives a shit about your shitty memes and anime you talk about with your sperg friends.

Get over yourself.

What is discord going to do? You already know it will log your chat data and maybe even voice potentially

Just don't do anything fucking stupid on it? Who cares.

but can browser get access to running processes?
I know desktop version can

what you say is used to create a profile for advertisers, obviously

maybe you tell your friend on discord you need to buy a new phone, now you get iphone ads

>why does it matter if privacy is dead wtf

100% of people have secrets, including you.

post your facebook and other social media
why are you on "Anonymous" website?
change name to your real one
nothing to hide, nothing to fear
>b..but this is different! my information is safe with private companies!
>it's not like there gonna happen a breach or something!
what you even doing on Jow Forums?
oh, wait... don't answer... is it consumer threads and for your tech support questions?

same but my fucking friends say NUTHIN TO HIDE TEAMSPEAK OLD XD

cancel.fm/ripcord/

Yea I think I trust a multibillion company over some rando on Jow Forums who told me to give away my private info

i run it through the web with umatrix, ublock. bestr option desu

Is it even a problem if you just use the website and don't connect it with steam/facebook etc?

>replacing a proprietary chat client with another proprietary chat client which was at least written by competent people who don't think making everything into a web browser application is a good idea.
I need more than this.
Especially since crapcord doesn't officially allow third party clients, and as such, this thing could break at any moment and you couldn't fix it because no source.
I don't care about freedom but I do care about having source code so I can fix shit if it breaks.

just use pisscord you autismo

I'm making a web version of openarena

Why people keep using discord if it's so bad?

Attached: 1436197768422.jpg (1424x1773, 529K)

lmao if you actually believe discord is that then I have news for you. Discord is VC funded and you are going to get so ridiculously fucked when those VCs demand money, Discord changes their privacy policy (which they can do without informing you :^) ) and then sell all your data including the data collected on the processes that run on your machine (your entire process tree is sent to their servers), real life name, messages, who your friends are etc.

Or they could have a data breach and all that information about you and everything you've ever done will be freely available to anyone on the internet.

If you think either of these two will not happen, then you are an idiot.

He literally runs discord process within his own process and wants to sell this.

He should be arrested.

>no gui, no discord

Same reason they use Windows.
>He literally runs discord process within his own process and wants to sell this.
Really? But then all his claims to fame would go out the window. Are you sure?

use ur phone lol

I've been debating using it in firejail. Has anyone tried that? How much would privacy improve?

>send GPG public key #1 to Discord server...
>Nigga send you his GPG public key in a message encrypted with your GPG#1 public key

Now, you develop a custom GPG-Discord client to make the whole process transparent. DISCORD SPIES BTFO.

Do the same too

begone glower

use ripcord

Run windows fully virtualized and only use it for gaymes. You cant trust any of these garbage corporations.

Does anyone else realize that discord sounds worse than discord? The highest quality codec (opus music) on teamspeak sounds much better than discord can at its highest setting. I don't understand these "test" videos that say discord sounds similar, they don't.

That said, the chat feature of discord is 1000x better than teamspeak's chat. I am ready for Teamspeak 5.

I agree with this post, I really don't care if discord is harvesting my metadata to help advertisers; I literally lose nothing from this. Discord is a very useful service that I use daily, so the trade off is worth it for me personally.

I can understand why people would think the opposite direction though, to each their own.

How the fuck else are they going to send a message to somebody without colleecting it

Stop spouting memes and actually use your brain. You can use the web app or alternatives that support Discord.

If you knew anything about API's you would think twice about calling such functionality "spying", it needs to know what you type so it can send a message, that is not "botnet" that is standard functionality that you're sperging about.

>Discord changes their privacy policy
If they actually did that they would get fucked with downvotes and all the old reddit posts the staff made would come back haunting to them

>Concerned about discord
>Posts on Jow Forums

I post loli porn regularly on discord and they haven't banned me. I think it's fine

>OH NO THE DOWNBOATS
Are you serious?

>all the old reddit posts the staff made would come back haunting to them
Literally irrelevant. Yes, they'll lose SOME disgruntled users, but the vast majority of them will stay because all their friends are there. This is why it took 10 years for Skype to finally die.

You have to understand that what Discord wants to do is to rope people into their service. When that has been done, the social pressure means more people will begin to use Discord and the vast majority of those that already do use it also won't leave for the same reason. When this goal has been reached to a sufficient degree they can begin to more and more aggressively monetise their platform, and even though people won't like it, they also won't leave. They've effectively been vendor locked-in because of peer pressure.

You see this literally anywhere else. It is how every single social network has taken off and it's why YT is still the only video platform with actual videos on it, despite the fact that everyone hates YT by now.

Test my "discord"? Don't spam, please.

chatnodesocket.herokuapp.com/

I forgot to fully finish my point: This is how Discord will go. It may take some years, but I absolutely guarantee you that they will update their privacy policy and begin selling user information to advertisers. They need to pay back VCs somehow, many millions of USD, and whatever they are doing now is simply not profitable enough for that. They will be forced to monetise the service A LOT more in order to be able to pay back their investors.

Discord users won't notice because the Discord application itself won't display ads, but Discord already collects a huge amount of information about your machine that fingerprints it and makes it uniquely identifiable. That information can be used to track you further online and make advertisers target ads even more aggressively towards you, because their data set now includes your chat log, details about your machine, what software you use and what games you like (giving a big insight into how you spend your money) etc.

Using Discord is a bad idea if you have any basic respect for your own privacy. Don't do it. You've been warned.

After all, you have nothing to hide, right?

I guarantee your friends understand, they just don't give a fuck. What does the average normalfag care if they get their data sold?

500+ replies from autistic gamers

Yeah because that's totally the same thing as Discord recording my conversations about video games, porn and anime.

Look bud, they've already gotten all the info about you that they need. Just use it.

>n-no i-it's not the same t-thing

fucking kys, tech illiterate faggot

wtf i hate privacy now

Discord is fuckin disgusting, so are normies.
I will not be surprised if it turns out discord steals more of my data than facebook messanger or some of the google shits

You can just delete your messages if you don't want them in their database.

How is this any different than IRC logs and all the other chat software logs btw?

>he thinks deleting messages ACTUALLY deletes them from the DB

jej
you're so naive it hurts

>bragging about a succesful bait anonymoosely
Absolutely pathetic

>You can just delete your messages if you don't want them in their database.
Imagine being this naive.
>How is this any different than IRC logs and all the other chat software logs btw?
It isn't. However OP did not mention IRC at all.

thanks
i feel validated now

From all the shits discord gets from you this will be like trying to put out a forest fire with a water pistol. Discord literally logs all the other programs (games) that you are currently using. Users were able to disable it some time ago, but I think they removed the option to disable it.

Matrix is foss/protocol
Bascially, the base matrix is just like discord
however, matrix allows you to bridge chats
So if your or my retarded friends only have enough iq points to use discord, you can bridge the conversation so that you use matrix, and they use discord. Your information will still be getting sold but you won't have to be running discord software which means stuff like constantly scaning your entire system isn't going to be a problem

Only disadvantage is that you appear as a bot on discord (which means you need to get the owner of the server to add your bot), you need to host your own bot (you can find other people that host bots, but other people are unreliable and the bot you were using could go offline) and matrix is a bit less user friendly (as in its a bit buggy) than discord.
So bascially, matrix is fine if you just wanna talk to friends over discord, but if you want access to a server where you don't know the owner (or someone thats gonna trust you enough to add your bot to their server), you are gonna need to run discord.

Mumble > Teamspeak
FOSS > Proprietary

E2E encryption does exist.

FOSS doesn't mean it's free as in freedom. It just means you don't pay for the program and the source is freely available. The licence can still be proprietary.

>trusting free software enough to post racist memes to your friends
Got no one else to blame but yourself retard. Discord is a great voice app, it's retards like you ruin things by treating it like le ebin 4chin: server edition.

It specifically says they're deleted, and it doesn't show in the data package that you can download in according to privacy laws. Feel free to test it, delete your message, download your package, and see if it's in the logs. It won't be.

So? Steam does that and it's what 99% of people use to launch games. Why is it a problem?

>You can just delete your messages if you don't want them in their database.
Nah, it just hides it from you and everyone else. It's still there.

>How is this any different than IRC logs and all the other chat software logs btw?
IRC servers are not run by for-profit corporations. IRC networks do not do extensive data mining on your logs, your IRC client does not fingerprint your machine, your IRC client does not monitor what software and games you are a user of, your voice is not recorded and data mined etc. The only identifiable information they have on you is your IP address (which may well be dynamic and so it wouldn't be uniquely identifiable) and your nick (which you are directly in control of how identifiable it is).

Discord collects A LOT of uniquely identifiable information that IRC networks simply do not have access to, and Discord has a for-profit motive and financial incentive to use your data. An IRC server's log is simply there to help the opers run a decent network, investigate evidence for bans etc.

>Nah, it just hides it from you and everyone else. It's still there.
Feel free to sue them then, this is highly illegal especially in the EU.

>It won't be.

>hey fags, what if someone deletes the messages?
>hmm, i don't know..
>what iff.. we make a db replica to ensure that the data is never deleted?
>that way we can pretend that we in fact delete the messages, while keeping a copy in our other DB
>..........
>that's it.

>IRC servers are not run by for-profit corporations.
I worked at a for-profit company and they ran an IRC server.

>FOSS doesn't mean it's free as in freedom

>mfw I only use discord as a voice app for when I play tarkov with my cousin
>mfw the only shit I "post" is maps about tarkov

Have fun with my info Stanislav, if you can get advertisers to pay for it you fucking earned it

Attached: image.jpg (480x480, 75K)

It really isn't, unironically.

Last time I checked my identity has never been stolen.

You should use FLOSS (which includes "libre", explicitly stating that it's truly free)

based and redpilled and epic for the win

you are a gentooman and a scholar

>So? Steam does that and it's what 99% of people use to launch games. Why is it a problem?
There is no evidence of Steam doing sifting through your process table and spying on you. Steam spawns a child process which it is the controller of, and thus it knows what process and game it launched. The PID of the process it spawned is literally returned to it by the fork()/CreateProcess() call (POSIX and Win32 API respectively). This also allows Steam to inject a Steam library to enable the Steam overlay and other functionality (IHS etc.)

If Discord was a game LAUNCHER, it would be completely different. It is NOT, it spies on your process tree to determine what games and software you're using.

Working on a mumble fork for my capstone lads
Gonna take mumble and add some discord features that zoomers take for granted, maybe try to add a server setup "wizard" that just werks

>Discord
cringe and yikespilled

>I worked at a for-profit company and they ran an IRC server.
Of course companies use IRC servers. IIRC Twitch Chat is still IRC as well (although their servers are trash).

What I was thinking of was public-facing, free networks like EFNet etc.

Is there any evidence of it keylogging when you use programs outside of Discord if you have it running in the background, or is that just everyone being paranoid?

Heavily modified irc that can't be accessed via normal irc programs anymore. They used to use normal irc before tho

I honestly have no idea about that, sorry.

No problem, that's pretty much the only thing I WOULD have if it were the case, they can take whatever they want in regards to what programs I'm running and what I'm actually posting in Discord.

I feel as though they don't keylog outside of their program because it could be serious legal trouble if they ever got caught, they shouldn't be gathering sensitive information that could potentially be posted in sites for shit like doctor's appointments and financial records. They would be up shit's creek if this was ever proven for that exact reason.

the only think I WOULD have a problem with if it were the case***

oh boy, you will grow up one day

no it can't, JS is sandboxed to the browser

>people thinks that X software has humans to listen to every kids conversation
Said no one. Voice recognition is a solved problem and all conversations can easily be transcribed to plain text, then further processed by software.
