The inability for you to truly interact with virtual objects. Might be interesting to see a room set up where the floor is a huge treadmill that swivels around so you feel like you're walking around in the virtual environment. Then you could have a robotic arm that hands the player plastic objects that the game will paint over with a virtual skin.

The price and the state of cheap headsets.
For a lot of people Windows Mixed Reality headsets actually turn them off VR entirely, since they think all headsets will be like that when in reality most aren't using 60hz 6bit TN LCDs overdriven to 90hz.

The high price of good headsets drives people away or to the bad headsets which drive them away.

i have one of the cheapo Windows headsets and I think it works really good, I use oculus rift at work and prefer the windows one because I can actually where my glasses while using it. really though, its just a pain to use because there's no good content for it. I think if someone actually made a good fucking game, that was actually creative and not just "heh we put a gun in VR" people would like it and VR would take off. But it is not an easy thing to do because essentially, user movement is highly constrained in VR.

Resolution, pixel pitch (though that should automatically get better as resolution rises) and display refresh rate.
As long as these aren't "fixed", VR will be a shitty gimmick meme.
Luckily, these are exact areas where vendors are starting to improve with mobile phone displays starting to reach into 4k territory and, thanks to Apple, slowly getting higher refresh rates.

There are many limitations, but it's still immersive and fun, so who cares?

Spent $900 (htc vive a few years ago) on something that is blurry as fuck, has only one fun game, and takes 30 minutes to set up each time I want to play. It collects dust now because I don't want to go through setting it up.

With 802.11AD the bandwidth and latency for proper wireless 4-8k 120Hz displays should be there.

Have to bring in the tripods into my room, plug in the light houses, adjust them, plug in headset, calibrate headset, every time.

1: Mobility, unless you have an entirely empty room in which you can set up your VR equipment, you'll end up tripping and bumping into furniture.
2: Bandwidth, because most commonly available wireless protocols are either high-latency or congested to hell, wired is your only choice and thus reduces mobility even more.
3: Software variety and quality. Most games are either shitty walking simulators or first person games with VR features just tacked on (poorly).

consider ironwolf vr, onward vr, racing and flight sim games (like IL-2) and beatsaber if you haven't already. If I weren't a southern europoor student I'd get a vr headset for those games.

I actually think that we need to move away from room-scale VR as the golden standard. I think that would work great if you can afford the space. However, I think for the most part, seated VR games are a better experience. Distance in VR is probably my favorite, and it's purely seated and requires a regular gamepad. I think in the future room scale VR is something you'll pay to do at a VR arcade where they can provide you with omnidirectional treadmills and whatnot.

the best games for VR are thus games that have a restricted playing are, like controlling a vehicle be it a car, a plane or a submarine (see ), or that game where you pew pew in slow motion and then teleport (superhot I think?). VR porn seems to be decently successful for the same reasons.
Mind you, the virtuix omni seems like a pretty decent attempt at making FPS games properly playable, but I guess it never caught on because it's so niche.

Why can't you attach them to the walls? They are so light they don't even need to go into studs. They can literally go into drywall without anchors if you are in a pinch (but I'm pretty sure they came with drywall anchors, so you should use them). This way, you only set it up a single time. You only need to run room setup once.

Or you could just make an actual physical environment and layer the vr on top

speaking of games with limited mobility, I'm surprised that well-known rail-shooter arcade franchises aren't clamoring to get their shit on a VR platform. Might be a good way to squeeze out a few more shekels from a franchise like that considering that arcades are pretty much dead in the west.
