At an old job of mine, before I single-handedly overhauled the written test to be less shit and reject obvious failures, we would get candidates in a face-to-face interview who had never learned that integer comparison was faster than string comparison. We also had people in phone screens who had never even heard of Unicode or ASCII. I could see the answers in coming from some particularly bad Pajeets that HR let apply because they were trying to hit diversity quotas.

When I was in my late 20s I have to interview people for a programming job and I still remember this guy with the most impressive CV I have ever saw I even feel intimidated interviewing him, certified, years of experience in everything design, programming, Jesus I wanted the guy to get hired just to learn from him, and then when I told the guy that as a formality he needed to answer and code some basic things, this guy starting sweating and make some excuse about having a doctor appointment a walked out of there like a scared deer. Didn't even try. Bizarre.

If the bound is known in advance, this would be better off as a jump table. Much faster to just use the multiplication operator though. A jump table might avoid a cache miss, multiplication would with certainty as the values are already in registers. Could be inlined easily, so on.
