Tim Berners-Lee tells us his radical new plan to upend the World Wide Web

This week, Berners-Lee will launch, Inrupt, a startup that he has been building, in stealth mode, for the past nine months. Backed by Glasswing Ventures, its mission is to turbocharge a broader movement afoot, among developers around the world, to decentralize the web and take back power from the forces that have profited from centralizing it. In other words, it’s game on for Facebook, Google, Amazon. For years now, Berners-Lee and other internet activists have been dreaming of a digital utopia where individuals control their own data and the internet remains free and open. But for Berners-Lee, the time for dreaming is over.

“We have to do it now,” he says, displaying an intensity and urgency that is uncharacteristic for this soft-spoken academic. “It’s a historical moment.” Ever since revelations emerged that Facebook had allowed people’s data to be misused by political operatives, Berners-Lee has felt an imperative to get this digital idyll into the real world. In a post published this weekend, Berners-Lee explains that he is taking a sabbatical from MIT to work full time on Inrupt. The company will be the first major commercial venture built off of Solid, a decentralized web platform he and others at MIT have spent years building.

Now that Terry is dead, Linus is a SJW and Stallman is well... too busy eating his foot cheese to do anything of value, is Timmy going to be /our guy/?

I'm all for this but I highly doubt the (((powers that be))) will let it happen. The web has become a dystopian hellhole and that's just how they want it.

It's a noble cause but if you're trying to break the iron grip of monopolies like Google and Amazon, that ship sailed a decade or more ago. Good luck convincing billions of users around the world to switch over to a fundamental new technology with no major corporate support.

this is my biggest concern.
even if the idea and execution are good, you still have millions upon millions of lethargic idiots who just cannot give enough of a fuck to switch.
that said, depending on what happens regarding the big tech sector and the trust investigations that have been floated.
who knows at this point desu...

Goodbye anonymity.

>he thinks he has any now

Sure, but this Berners-Lee guy wants everyone to put all their personal information into one of his "pods" which are tied to some identity you are assigned. One of the specific things he mentions that his users would store is health info - as far as I know my health record isn't currently tied to my IP address. Sounds like a great idea to me, goy.

>this Berners-Lee guy
>...goy

Did you come over from Jow Forums by chance?

SIEG HEIL IM GOING TO MAKE THE BIGGEST ADOLF HITLER FAN SITE ON THE NEW WEB!

Fuck normies. This would be a good way of quarantining those fucks and getting back pre-2000 web.

ie. Tim Berners Lee is trying to destroy the internet.

I read the article but there wasn't much to work with. How does one switch to Solid pods? What apps are available to use them? Are these apps available on Android and Apple?
>Berners-Lee presented as a savior instead of Glasswing Ventures' marketing campaign
>Russian hackers on Facebook tied in for ++narrative because Hillary really couldn't have just failed

implyying you want them on the nu-web while they are the reason why web-web is so shit :thinking_kike:

Tim Berners-Lee did not invent anything, and we should all stop talking about him

deep and edgy

stfu kike

>No anonymity
Fucking dropped, and yes I know that we're not anonymous at all to TPTB but the most important aspect of anonymity is being anonymous to other people on the internet.

If you're assigned an identity then it's fucked just imagine being forced to namefag on Jow Forums.

>decentralize

No i'm not going to help you host child porn you sick fuck.

Where's the statement about ruining the internet with spying? Because that's all Tim Berners Lee is good at.

This. What an idiot.
This is another ploy to make an SJW hellhole where your posts are traced back to your real identity so mob violence makes your life a living hell.

You can already do what he wants to do right now without any of the poisonous moral codes or possibility of getting doxxed. It's called I2P.

Tim sold out to EME, he can hang for all I care, we all should go back to gopher anyhow

>the only online mobs are SJWs
>implying most hate mail and death threats don't overwhelmingly originate from Nazis, Trumpcucks, etc.

a unique identity doesn't meant your real identity

It means Reddit

It doesn't take much to tie the two together.
Once your unique identity gets tied to your real identity, there's not much difference.

Remember, the whole point of this platform is to put your personal information online, linked to the identity you're assigned.

I've not looked into his proposal but what differentiate it from many of the other quality federated platforms out there? GnuSocial / Mastodon instead of Twitter, Diaspora / Friendica etc .. instead of Facebook. Matrix and XMPP for messaging etc, NextCloud and more..

There are apps and protocols even for data storage like Hubzilla not to mention block chain and crypto backed stuff that are open and federated instead of using proprietary shit. How is this different ?

>Literally not realizing that the vast majority of doxxing on places like Tumblr and Facebook are done by SJWs.

Solid's central focus is to enable the discovery and sharing of information in a way that preserves privacy. A user stores personal data in "pods" (personal online data stores) hosted wherever the user desires. Applications that are authenticated by Solid are allowed to request data if the user has given the application permission. A user may distribute personal information among several pods; for example, different pods might contain personal profile data, contact information, financial information, health, travel plans, or other information. The user could then join an authenticated social-networking application by giving it permission to access appropriate information in a specific pod. The user retains complete ownership and control of data in the user's pods: what data each pod contains, where each pod is stored, and which applications have permission to use the data.[1]

TL:DR it seems like its basically app permissions for the web. cant be any worse then what we have now.

>Man I sure need this obscure old software patch
>Whoops, no seeders for this site on my new decentralized internet, guess I have to just give up.

Even on the current web, old websites and file downloads go offline and are lost forever all the time.

Holy fuck that's hilarious. Too bad I'm too ugly to even get a single date to pull that shit on 3dpd.

They haven't caught him yet but the list of shit they want to charge him with is absurd. So far he'll be facing a maximum of 13 years in prison over $950 in restaurant bills.

They caught him.

>The user retains complete ownership and control of data in the user's pods
Okay but the moment you give another application permission to read something it is just going to make a copy of it so that's rather meaningless if you intend to user the data.

I wouldn't mind it becoming a cool kids' club for a long time, like the early Internet of USENET and IRC.

That having been said, Google came up largely on geek cred while Altavista and Yahoo were the dominant search engines.
