Who else /utilitarian/ here? After years of distro hopping and ricing I got tired of this bullshit. It distracts me from what's actually important: getting job done. I no longer fiddle with themes, icons, wallpapers, fonts and other memes like an autistic manchild, I just download a text editor of my choice, favourite browser, whatever else is necessary and fuck off to do what I want.
Which distro offers best defaults, /a/? For me it's Ubuntu 16.04. I don't care it's ugly as fuck, truth is, it comes with all the shortcuts I like and necessary utilities. Almost every linux program is tested on Ubuntu, therefore there are rarely any issues with third party software. I fear the day unity stops getting supported and Ubuntu moves entirely to gnome which is shit.
Also, Windows is objectively utilitarian masterrace leagues above any linux distro
Why not 18.04 instead?

True, nothing beats ubuntu minimal install if you want to get shit done.

>Why not 18.04 instead?
I prefer Unity to Gnome. I tried using Gnome in the past, but it was always lacking compared to Unity.

Same. It's an OS's job to run software. It doesn't make sense to care how it looks like. I just leave shit at default and run my programs instead of keeping up with what's essentially computer fashion.

KDE friend, KDE.

I actually tried KDE out recently, hearing how it improved recently. I think I'll move to Kubuntu once 16.04 gets obsolete, though one major thing I don't like about KDE is how it doesn't come with default shortcuts for window snapping, i.e. Meta+Arrow. I remember from my ricing days how hard it was to set shortcuts so that they mimic Windows behaviour. You can do Meta+Left/Right just fine, but it's a royal pain to set up Meta+Up/Down

>I won't spend eight hours building a custom DE with a riced i3 or openbox
this is perfectly defensible
>I won't spend 60 seconds to set a wallpaper
this is just as autistic as the ricers, only in the opposite direction.

I use Windows10 + O&O shutup 10 to disable most of the garbage (ads and such) + simplewall to block any outgoing network connection by default. It just werks and I can run all the programs and games I want.

Is that why you change your anime tiddies pape on your memeOS with every screenshot? Grow a fucking brain and install Gentoo properly.

There's no benefit to changing your wallpaper, user. Most of the time it's obscured anyway. If anything, you're going to waste an hour looking for a picture to your liking.

manjaro xfce is pretty good for those coming from windows IMO.

Do you also refuse to hang pictures on your wall because its a waste of time, and they have no function except as decoration? Does your wardrobe consist of five gray shirts that you wear in succession, because anything else is just pointless?

Actually this.

For me, the only really standout feature of Unity is how well-implemented the top bar is, and KDE can pull off the exact same thing with a bit of work.

I have never had any pictures on my walls or in frames in my entire life. :^)

Why not debian? It's more stable and doesn't get you shit on like Ubuntu

non-utilitarian masterrace detected

Ubuntu still gets too much updates and can brake, I'm on Debian stable.

The only thing I find acceptable other than the default wallpaper is setting up this picture of the day thingy.

yeah... but dude...it's like... the CONCEPT of it

op I got out of the faze of ricing so fast, I used to be the
>"FUCK GNOME, ITS GAY AND BOTNET
dont listen to the Jow Forums memes, I have pure OS running on a x220 coreboot
thats all I need to keep cozy and safe

Try Ubuntu MATE. It has a panel layout named Mutiny that makes the desktop look and work in a similar way to Unity.

This

Please try Gentoo or LTFS. This changes my life.

>what is debian

>t. [Insert flavor here]tu toddler that failed a non installer distro and now pretends to be utilitarian

I just use a drop down fullscreen terminal with tmux, and have a normal desktop environment. You faggots with your stupid time wasting.

Same, except I landed on Debian Stable.
I have started to loathe software updates, there's always some fag who feels they needed to make a useless change to a ui or a programs workflow so your old way of doing things subtly breaks or have to change.
I just want the same shit I've always used to work the same, forever.

People in here who don't realize OS's don't matter now that Docker and Vagrant exist.

true utilitarian is using whatever is installed on your computer or whatever gives you the least amount of headaches so you can use your computer for its intended purpose (which might mean installing the best linux distro - ubuntu on it)

Kek. Imagine being so stupid and inexperience that you think this.

when does ubuntu get your shit except when installation?

>os don't matter
>here are some tools so you can install lots of os
Errr..

Even though I fucking hate these huge and glossy "Start" windows, I do believe that Unity is comfier than Gnome.

>getting the job done is important
Then why use linux at all? Isn't fiddling with the OS and compiling your own kernel part of the fun?

I upgraded from 17.10 to 18.04 and still have unity, so I still use it, I don't know what I'd use if I didn't have unity

>16.04
That shit felt so bloated. Was that when unity was introduced? i might be confused. I adopted Ubutun somewhere around 9 and switched to mint when unity was pushed because ubuntu went from snappy to bloat and sluggish real quick. Mint was nice, i kind of got bored with it because its so set it and forget it so ive been hoping a bit waiting on my new laptop trying to figure out what i want to run.

I have a legit mental illness and when I change something or have orphaned packages or whatever I feel like I've "sullied" the system and reinstall. I also delete my downloaded files regularly.

I get like this myself, maybe I have an illness I dont know. I just feel like if I add something and dont know where it went or fuck up some setting I have to rebuild it. like im playing a game and have to do "it" in the right order.

>open terminal
>sudo apt install ubuntu-unity-desktop
>choose lightdm

Works like a charm on 18.04, Unity is still in the repos. Until the next LTS there sure as hell will be a Unity flavor. Funny how everybody was always shitting on it but now that it has been replaced it turns out people are contrarian faggots and/or hate GNOME even more.

Because it is free, doesn't spy on you and a lot easier to use than Windows.

I use Kubuntu 18.04 with the default wallpaper.

I feel the same but because of privacy/computer forensics. Knowing that dispersed through the filesystem is stored evidence of all the weird porn I've seen, every pic I've taken, everything I've written, and maybe even some of the shit I did or said in front of my computer, really freaks me out.

I use Windows 10 PRO, because it's better than Lagbuntu.

Fucking 50ms delay one every input you guys just don't care do you.

Disappointed with the Neon upgrade, how stable is Kubuntu 18.04? I am considering changing to Kubuntu or OpenPEPE...

I would completely agree if Gnome3 had a menu and show desktop button.

This is Ubuntu with Cinnamon.

does it run ok on a potato?

ubuntu budgie my friend

*lags 100ms when navigating the settings menu*
Both footfetishOS and Winblows are cancer.

>not running a realtime kernel

This.
>Install Arc-kde theme in settings
>download papirus theme or sudo pacman -S
>(optional) Install Lato font for gui

That's it.You are set.

It is free, doesn't spy, force a update or forcing you some memes like windows 10.
Don't know about fagOS but that shit is expensive and for that money I can buy myself a Thinkpad.

I've started just staying on the oldest supported LTS until it ends and just switching to the newer one when support ends. So I'm on 14.04 now, and will move up to 16.04 when support for that ends.

>look at my default, soon to be unsupported OS
>I am productive
>new and longer time supported distribution?
>no thank you, I prefer unity, GNOME lacks productivity features
>I will try KDE, because """unintentionally""" installed distribution which doesn't provide support for new hardware anymore
>and sure thing I won't change my distribution because of that
>definitely not pretext to me
>yep, gonna be productive until 2021
>this thread is my first sign of productivity
>definitely not gonna distrohop anymore
>I am a faggot

Oh, wow, OP, it was hard to decypher your post, but I think I managed to do it pretty well.
Go and be productive you enormous homosexual. :^)

>Do you also refuse to hang pictures on your wall because its a waste of time, and they have no function except as decoration? Does your wardrobe consist of five gray shirts that you wear in succession, because anything else is just pointless?
Are you trying to say there is anything wrong with following the ZUCC fashion style? Because its not.

Lubuntu is personally my favourite of the versions, most minimal but still get some stuff if u need gui for whatever reason.

Is there a difference between opensuse and fedora for python and web dev stuff?
Just need something stable, but without old packages

fedora is bleeding edge but i wouldnt say stable

You can still install Unity on Ubuntu 18.04 friendo.
As for me, I decided to stay on Debian. Shit's so stable.

why not debian

Attached: 075.jpg (680x383, 28K)

Yes, yes. Debian stable with JWM.

why

I can't wait for the official kde spin of Solus.

>Lato
>not Plex

This is old news, gramps. Gnome devs fixed a bunch of things a while ago.

Attached: icons_on_dsktop.png (888x517, 33K)

I was at that point as well. I was using Debian and started off with Openbox, then Scrotwm and then i3 which I used to use for some years before getting a MBP a few years back. Since then I keep Linux around for fun, using it to explore some retro stuff like mwm (which I use currently) and fvwm etc. and enjoying the simplicity of what is now known as spectrwm.

At the end of using Debian, before getting a MBP, I got pretty tired of the ricing and modularity. Unfortunately my notebook was already dying and too weak for KDE or Gnome (and it didn't work well the linux graphic drivers, so Gnome for example was unusable). If I would be dependent on Linux as my main source of getting work done I would set up a DE that is unified and pretty much read to use from the start and which I don't have to do much tinkering with, most likely KDE or maybe Gnome (which worked better with Wayland for me).

KDE is absolute shit out of the box. Requires a ton of fiddling that I don't have time for.
When unity support runs out, I think gnome 3 is the only option. For me, it's fedora.

Holy fuck, RIP Unity. The newest version looks like dogshit.

>Do you also refuse to hang pictures on your wall because its a waste of time, and they have no function except as decoration?
Well, I don't have any pictures on my wall, you're right. Why would I? Do you have pictures on your wall?

>Does your wardrobe consist of five gray shirts that you wear in succession, because anything else is just pointless?
They're not gray. They're all plain and mono colored. I wear them in succession. Monday is black, Tuesday is white, Wednesday is red, Thursday is blue, Friday is green. And on the weekend, I just wear something casual, like a pajama shirt.

>you're going to waste an hour looking for a picture to your liking.
I don't go out of my way to look for a wallpaper. One day, I happened to walk by a really cool looking building. I took a photo of it and set it as my wallpaper. Haven't changed it in 3 years.

Well now that you mentioned it,yeah my shirts are all white and my pants are all denim.

It's seriously using OSX icons? Hinting at preferred audience?

Just started using Ubuntu Budgie, it's great so far. I was using regular Ubuntu, but I went to Windows. Seeing Ubuntu Budgie made me come back.

I'm with you user, but Windows is trash. macOS is the true utilitarian OS.

ubuntu ftw.. just werks

>outdated browser
Dropped

He changed them

>soon to be unsupported
OP is a faggot but 2021 is hardly "soon".

If it only had updated coreutils and GNU tools…
F*ck you RMS

>just werks
After they're dropped Unity? No, it doesn't just works anymore

autism

yep
stayed with 16.04
tried 18.04 but it feels way slower

Attached: brando.jpg (380x475, 42K)

it seems more like autism to spend an hour looking for a wallpaper you like, and to walk into clothing stores looking at clothes for 5 hours until you find something you like

>After years of distro hopping and ricing I got tired of this bullshit.

Hi, workstation distro here, we've solved this problem ages ago.

Attached: suspicious chameleon.jpg (1280x853, 168K)

I copied the screenshot from their Github. github.com/ubports/unity8

I've been using XFCE since 2011. It does what I want and it doesn't seem to be changing too much, which I'm glad of. But I do feel like it's been getting more buggy since 2011.

Ricing makes for a comfy work environment though.

I think some flat designs look alright but Unity 8 looks like it was thrown together in Paint, I don't get how they're not ashamed of displaying it.

>we're closer to 2021 than to 2012
H-hold me, bros.

Unironically yes.

>Does your wardrobe consist of five gray shirts that you wear in succession
>mfw it does
I sit in a company basement being a literal nobody for 40 hours a week, I don't fucking care. I could sit there with nothing but a bathrobe on, my boss wouldn't even care because I never see the faggotty fuck.

It was the first and only lts with unity

Are you really justifying lag?

I low how people just don't realize KDE's better than both Unity and Gnome and tiling windows managers are even better.

Black t shirts are better.

what a fucking retard, 18.04 LTS is the current 'stable'
