It depends on the person. Just like how we have varying sharpness in our vision, we also have varying 'swiftness' of vision. My friend can't see the difference between 30fps and 60fps, while 144 vs 180 fps is day and night to me.

Even if I wouldn't play games, I still prefer fast refresh rates because of the smooth mouse and smooth scrolling on webpages, it's pleasing to my eyes.

You do need to have adaptive sync and use a player that can present the content properly (e.g. framedouble 24fps to 48 so that it's within the freesync range, assuming you don't have LFC). Windows 10's built-in video player can do this, for example.

Nigger I bet you don't even know that 144 Hz displays were made for gsync/freesync BELOW 144 Hz in the first place, because for variable refresh rate to work the frame rate should be STRICTLY LOWER than display's maximum refresh rate. If your games exceed 144 fps freesync/gsync will simply stop working on 144 Hz display. But retards like you still pushed the 144 Hz so vendors made 240 Hz displays for EXACT SAME REASON.

There's no right answer. The difference between 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 in terms of image quality is large and easily noticeable at 27"+, but so is the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz in terms of smoothness. If you want image quality you go with 4K, if you want smoothness you go with lower-res 144Hz. After seeing both I personally went with 4K, but the holy grail is having 4K 120Hz+.

Keep in mind one thing, though. At 4K you will want to stick very close to 60FPS or stutter will become very apparent. Any drops to below 50 will definitely be felt. At higher FPS you have much greater leeway while not getting severe stutter, it's much easier to maintain at least 60FPS at 1440p even if you can't get 144.

I bought a cheap monitor recently that I could set at 75hz and I see the difference well.

The problem is emulators. Those play better with 60 or 120hz.

Take it from a guy who has a gtx1080 and a 32 inch 4k monitor, do not go lower than 32 inch at 4k, you wont appreciate the benefit. 1440p still looks fucking amazeballs on a 32 inch 4k display.

I should have clarified, games running at 1440p resolution. gaming is not really my focus, i do audio work, and appreciate the desktop real estate of 4k in applications.

A gtx1080 doesnt always push maxed out games at 60fps in 4k, so sometimes a drop down to 1440p in games like the witcher 3 or gta5 etc is needed to maintain a solid 60fps, they still look incredible at this res.

Sometimes i just drop settings down to high and keep it at 4k 60fps, but those pesky nvidia gamewords and hairworks settings kill framerates buddy, so sometimes i need to go 1440p.

Also 32inch imo is the limit with 100% scaling. i cant imagine how fucking small guis and fonts etc look at 100% on a 27 inch 4k.

So what i mean is, 1440p/144hz @ 27inch is probably better if OP games a lot than 4k/60hz @ 28 inch, 1440p is fucking nice, even on my 32 inch 4k.

Thats exactly what i meant, its a bad example as its a badly optimized game but i think arkham knight can dip as low as 28/30fps in 4k on my rig with everything maxed though generally runs about 40-50fps.

In 1440p it runs more like 70-90fps constant and dips to about 45-50fps if i recall.

Thought about overclocking my card but meh, i could turn the nvida gameworks smoke off and shit but it looks fucking sweet.

I think nothing till the RTX 2080ti out of the box, no mods could brute force run it stable at 60/4k.

I have a 32" 4K and honestly text is too small at 100%. I can see it (if I sit close enough), but my eyes hate me after using it for a while.

I've set it to 125% instead, which is effectively 3072x1728 in terms of working space. I'm happy with that, and text is beautifully sharp. I did originally have hopes of keeping it at 100% and treating it as 4x 1080p, but it just isn't quite big enough. I think 40" is the minimum for 100%.

I already have a 1080p 144hz monitor, I just feel it's a waste to have a 1080ti running at 1080p if my older RX580 could already hit 144 at 1080p
