What did NEETS/Shutins do at home all day before the internet?

Read books at the library

Watch anime on LaserDisc, some mail order companies back then specialized on importing it. Also play videogames and maybe mess around with computers.

Electronics projects
Mathematics

HAM radio.

books, model trains, computer on bbs, computer to build stuff, video games, fap, collecting stamps and other autistic hobbies.

same as you but more productive.

Bettered themselves because porn wasn't ruining their motivation.
Look how much happier that kid looks than the porn zombies of today.

I feel like the porn zombie is subtly redpilled though. it isn't endgame, but it's definitely farther than what most of society deems as fun or exciting

like,
>YAY TRAINS@!!!!
>YAY STAMP COLLECTING I HAVE SO MANY!!!

In some ways this has to be a con on the individual at some level. Keeping in the idea of society controlling sexuality or keeping it taboo or not showing tits on television, the system does its best to guarantee you "good wholesome fun" while obscuring the greater pleasure beyond because its less approved or more primal/dangerous etc.

>porn ruins motivation
Is this the more advanced form of 'motivation is genetic'?

This, but at home, and there were consoles.

most shut-ins before the internet were mentally ill people (legitimately, not "I have autism")

comic books? that's the manga/anime of the boomers.

fuck the local wagecucks wives

This.
I've been a shut-in for all my life due to assburgers (diagnosed at 18 after several years on treatment for severe depression and a couple months spent on a psychiatric ward).
I've liked trains since I was a little kid, and I still play with them. Thankfully my father had quite a sizeable collection of N-Scale rolling stock a friend passed onto him.
I don't really read that much aside from topics I'm interested in, but when I was in the ward without an Internet connection I spent most of my time reading books from the small library they had there.
I frequent BBSs every now and then, though I don't post anything since most of the time I can't really relate to other people or add anything to the topics.
I used to play a lot of vidya until I hit 16 or so, then I stopped enjoying it altogether. Built quite a collection of what's now considered "retro", back then I just bought old stuff because it was cheap and I enjoyed the games anyway. Plus modding consoles (region, RGB and all that) was quite interesting.
I masturbate way too much, but I started doing so at 11 and managed to do it without porn for two years or so.
As for other autistic hobbies, I collect cameras and photography related stuff, and shoot pictures and record videos on them. I also like electronics, and have taught myself how to fix outdated devices, mostly AV stuff but also fans and vintage gear in general.
None of this is any more productive than shitposting on here, except for the electronics thing. I made friends with the owner of a local record store and he gives out my number to people who are looking for someone to perform oddball repairs on their old audio stuff. I make some money from that.

the absolute projection in this post

>mentally ill people
What are shutins nowadays?

theres different degrees of mental illness
before the internet shutins were people who were seriously impaired
now it's just "I have self-diagnosed autism and dont want to get a job"

Died in a ditch in Nam

Model trains
Lego
Books
D&D

nobody wants to get a job, user. plenty of people want money, but nobody wants a job. More shut-ins in this day and age is just a reflection that its now more possible to somehow be supported without having to do the "get a job" part.

>model railroad, n scale
>dnd games
>sitting alone in public places
>attend town meetings, all of them.

They dialed up their friends.

read comics, fantasy or science fiction books, ant farms, shitty painters, piano.

Swimming
Bike rides
Hanging out at the mall (before Lord Bezos killed them all).
Vidya on NES, SNES, N64, PS1, early PCs.

I had a buddy I used to play modem-to-modem 1v1 doom games with when we were in high school. I enjoyed building projects featured in Popular Electronics, e.g. simple robotics, simple laser stuff. Sometimes could get my dad to buy a kit from a magazine, like I built a kit that was similar to pic related, just components for a pcb with a digital alarm clock-style output (88) and a hex keypad to program it. I also built a laser microphone that you could point at a window or a wall to hear the other side. It didn't work well because of the cheap laser, it was paper cu/string audio quality but still fun to evesdrop on the neighbors with. Also phone phreaking was a thing, I bult a few toneboxes, a classic redbox from a radio shack tone dialer, and an old motorola phone that could be put into a test mode by shorting the middle battery contacts and could then be used to monitor other cell calls in the area. My dad was an engineer so he encouraged and helped with all this stuff. I learned the phone stuff from a BBS called Roy's Place and when my dad caught me manipulating the public phone system with control tones I was afraid I was in trouble but he thought it was awesome. He did get mad when he found a lineman's handset in my room because he knew I stole it.

>neets
>laserdisc
sure thing kiddo, they were also doing blow and hookers in vegas, r-right?

Buying and having physical products is more productive than paying for digital distribution.

watch tv all day

>tfw even NEETs were better back then.
WTF

Paid digital distribution ruined gaming and society.

And playboy magazines instead of porn.

They didn't really exist in the way we think about them now.
But there were people who spent lots of time reading cheap sci-fi and fantasy novels.

There were porn magazines back then.

Are you implying you had to be rich to have laserdisc? This is inaccurate. Laserdisc was a premium format but not out of the reach of anyone willing to save a bit. No more than poorfags now who own the newest game systems.

>because porn wasn't ruining their motivation.
They bought massive amounts of porn mags, erotica (written porn), and jacked off to stuff they saw on TV. In the 80s they rented porn.

One thing that may not be so well known to current NEETs.

They watched game shows. LOTS of fucking game shows. Religiously watched them every day and were autistic about it. I'm not sure why they did this especially, and I somewhat think it has something to do with the whole "friend simulator" aspect as well as the dopamine hit that comes with answering the questions right or wrong.

They weren't readily accessible to kids, you had to settle for the Sears catalog women's underwear section or the pay-per-view scrambled porn channel on cable television.

We're talking about NEETs/shut-ins, not kids.

Yeah, I just saw op's pic and skimmed the thread but the same applies to people who didn't leave their house. No one wants to go to the shitty industrial district downtown to get their jackoff material.

>No one wants to go to the shitty industrial district downtown to get their jackoff material.
You severely underestimate what men will do to get porn. And you didn't have to go to the "shitty industrial district". You could buy Playboy from gas stations, just had to ask for it since it was kept under the counter.

Also: subscriptions

Attached: playboy-subscription[1].jpg (200x193, 64K)

And the same people wonder why they're depressed and can't get stacy to blow their microsoft&hard

>or the pay-per-view scrambled porn channel on cable television.
This is mostly a 90s thing. Well into the internet era.

Model trains probably

*blocks your path, and frequency*

mail order VHS anime tapes from japan and Warhammer/40k

if you read old Warhammer magazines from the 80/90s its obvious all the same degenerates that we are now used to do that instead.

and before that it was DnD..

and before that im not sure geeks existed desu just nerds.

LARPING was the start of all of this madness.

my best friend in high school was adiment he was a geek and not a nerd. but i think he was actually a nerd and i was the geek beacuse he sold out and got a real job while im still geeking a decade later.

This, but also in my case I just played video games all day.

Bulletin boards

Why would anyone get a job so girls might blow them?

burn shit

My uncle was a NEET and his room was waist high in shitty sci fi books and tech magazines.
