Never buy Apple hardware unless it's PowerPC based. If you buy PowerPC Apple hardware it works best with Linux or BSD. If you want to run modern MacOS then you should hackintosh. Works great on a lot of laptops and works even better on desktops. If you're unable to hackintosh, then just install Linux with KDE.
Pic related is a ThinkPad X230 running High Sierra. Everything works except for WiFi, which was solved using a $10 USB adapter.

No. That's just not true. My Lombard ran horribly even with OpenBSD, though OpenBSD is what I use on my 1.67GHz PowerBook G4.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no, you stupid faggot. AMT is merely an optional set of firmware modules on top of the IME's firmware stack that allows for remote management. Disabling AMT doesn't disable the IME.
You wanna know it works? It turns on when it gets fed power, either by your battery or wall charger. The firmware is stored in the same chip as your BIOS/EFI firmware. The IME first looks for its partition table, which tells it which modules to load. Even if AMT isn't loaded it's still loading a kernel, device drivers, microcode, and whole bunch of other shit. Then, and only then, will it initialize the x86 cores and handoff the boot process to your BIOS/EFI firmware, which finds a disk and boots your secondary bootloader and OS.
But you think you're safe because you toggled off the built in networking stack. That's cute. It's not like it could be a placebo switch or anything. How would you know when it's entirely closed source and running blow your fucking BIOS? Get the fuck out.
