That's a rather cynical view.
They're more like Nintendo - they do some pretty great things but also suffer from NIH syndrome and can be very inflexible about changing their ways to follow new standards.

Apple has created many nice features which are now standard across the industry (along with blunders that everyone seems to copy as well) but they themselves can be slow to adopt from outside, to the point of hubris about their own weird ecosystem.

Even though I haven't purchased a product from them in 10 years, I'm glad they're around.
