That box was originally made for bass accompaniment for studio musicians. But they couldn't figure out how to work it or get a bass like sound, so it failed terribly. EDM heads started finding them for a pittance in pawn shops and realized they make some pretty neat sounds. They eventually came to define a whole genre of edm (acid house), and became probably the most iconic synth ever, and can regularly be found for over $1000.
