AMD actually donated Mantle to Khronos who made Vulkan; it's not a purely AMD thing, but it really only exists thanks to / because of AMD, yes.

just like the nvidia GeForce Partner Program, they have deep pockets / market share to "force" people to adapt it.

nvidia always does this

basically, nvidia makes cards that will run the current software better
and amd makes cards that create new technology for better software in the future, really to push a boundary; hence the mantle/vulkan api, hence why they all worked better with DX12, etc...but nvidia still does better with old shit (9.0c, open gl, etc...)

ideally vulkan will supercede openGL but it'll take a long time sadly. :/
